A Christian Ethics of Care as a Spiritual Model: Its Pastoral Applications and Relevance
No full textAbstract The work introduces a new and innovative pastoral/spiritual care theory/model, which I have labeled as the Christian ethics of care. The Christian ethics of care is composed of a five-point framework, and the primary moral and social elements of it are the following: compassion, attention, respect, prayer, and empathy (CARPE). While many individuals in their daily lives extend one, some, or even all of the five-point framework elements of CARPE to someone or others in their social interactions, this paper takes the position that (non-) professional pastoral and spiritual caregivers should make a conscious and concerted effort to incorporate all five of the elements of CARPE into their interactions with suffering clients/patients. As a result of doing so, this work asserts that a positive effect will occur upon the clients’/patients’ overall health and well-being, while leading to emotional, psychological, spiritual, and even physical healing within the suffering/grieving person receiving pastoral/spiritual care. In order for pastoral/spiritual caregivers to effectively understand how the Christian ethics of care could be utilized and practiced, I have created four hypothetical/fictional case studies, which deal with actual real world traumatic events, covering various scenarios involving a suffering individual and/or his/her family member(s) dealing with trauma, loss, and grief. In these case studies I, as the pastoral/spiritual caregiver, extend CARPE to my clients/patients, analyze and discuss the Christian ethics of care case studies, and provide a pastoral/spiritual care plan, to each client/patient, based upon the Christian ethics of care theory/model. Finally, the work focuses on how a medium, such as film in our digital age, could positively contribute to overcoming social prejudices in our society that are contradictory to CARPE, while encouraging pastoral/spiritual caregivers to consider using particular films to more creatively interact with their suffering and/or grieving clients/patients

No full textThis project introduces 660 Fifth Avenue as a total work of art and through a multidisciplinary framework, examines its aura, as it was originally completed and displayed to guests and members of the press at the time of the Vanderbilt Ball on March 26, 1883. Once completed, 660 Fifth Avenue was possessed as an act of performative identity by social celebrity, Alva Vanderbilt. Further, this project identifies Richard Morris Hunt as a cultural intermediary and arbiter of taste whose singular brand of academically studied, historically referential style, created a desire for a new mode of domestic architecture, which came to define American luxury. Written in Black, White, and Red: An Exploration of Civilizer Theology in American History
Get PDFThis paper proposes an extended definition and discusses examples of civilizer theology within the perceptions and practices of white Protestant American Christianity faith traditions. Civilizer theology is defined as a self-referential, self-fulfilling framework actively shaping the expectations, behaviors and practices of societal norms driving cultural practices. Examples are selected as guided by three significant and interdependent dispositions characterizing civilizer theology: cultural decay/moral decline, authority, and violence. This paper hypothesizes theological interpretation, application and exegesis, mediated by the three dispositions, are deliberately applied to support socio-economic, cultural and political ends with the goal of maintaining power structures benefiting a particular group

Get PDFFew issues in the Jamesian corpus have been more controversial than Isabel Archer’s decision to return to her cruel husband Gilbert Osmond at the end of The Portrait of a Lady. While critics have often thought of Isabel’s decision as either unrealistic, unjustifiable, or misguided, her choice becomes more rational when viewed within the context of a Bakhtinian polyphonic novel. By seeing the novel as a free-flowing novel of voices about the nature of freedom, Isabel’s choice can be explained as holding true to her belief that “freedom” means holding steadfast to one’s responsibilities, a conclusion she reaches by synthesizing other ideas about freedom she has learned from other female characters in the novel. Portrait therefore is a “novel of voice”, where characters like Isabel reach self-actualization by interacting with speech, unrestrained and unprivileged, and creating a new, autonomous, unified self out of it

Exploration of factors that influence advance care planning for primary care patients
No full textThe purpose of this exploratory descriptive research study is to explore the individual factors that influence health care decisions in a small sample of primary care patients who have received advance care planning education through the State Innovation Model Grant in Rhode Island. Both quantitative and qualitative data was gathered from a voluntary 10 question participant survey. This survey research aimed to answer the following research questions: What are the individual, environmental and behavioral factors that influence healthcare decisions at end-of-life? How do individuals, in their own words, describe the thought process used for making decisions about advance care planning? A 38% response rate was achieved. Results revealed that education about end of life care and family were the most consistently reported elements which helped make choices for preferred care at end of life. Two major themes emerged, control over self and family, and sharing of experiences that impact decision making for care at end of life. Awareness of elements that influence preferences for care provide valuable insight into the thought processes that frame healthcare choices for end of life care and identify barriers and facilitators that influence end of life planning. Knowledge of this information can guide program development, policy and procedures around advance care planning. No full textThe conditions that allowed for the creation and sustainment of the regime of General Manuel Noriega of Panama span the areas of politics, military, violence, cronyism, corruption, and propaganda. Noriega’s disavowal of the authority of the President of Panama, Eric Delvalle, who “fired”(1) Noriega from his military position as Commander of the Panamanian Defense Forces on February 25, 1988(2) and the General’s subsequent manipulation of the Legislative Assembly, established his role as de facto military and political leader of the country. Overall, Noriega used many elements of national power to sustain himself in power(3) including: MILITARY - Having himself promoted three ranks to four-star general after he assumed command of the National Guard, thus placing himself four ranks above the next most senior officer - Restructuring the National Guard to become the Panama Defense Forces (PDF) - Ordering the extrajudicial killing of a key opponent, Dr. Hugo Spadafora, by PDF - Creating an armed militia force, the Dignity Battalions, numbering about fifteen thousand, who were loyal only to him and ready to commit violence when needed - Quashing peaceful demonstrations against his rule and brutalizing detainees POLITICS - Manipulating nearly every presidential transition from 1983 through 1989 - Discarding the role of the constitutional Legislative Assembly and creating the larger, fully pro-regime National Assembly of District Representatives, which could then rubber-stamp his decisions - Assigning his cronies to the Electoral Tribunal, which ensured presidential voting favored his chosen candidate MEDIA - Shutting down opposition media and favoring state-run media including newspapers, radio, and TV, which resulted in his voice being heard and driving the opposition underground BUSINESSES & DRUGS - Using government-controlled, income-generating entities to enrich himself and his favored subordinates - Allowing narcotics traffickers to use national territory and banks for the drug trade for which he received a share of the proceeds - Permitting money-laundering in Panama, for which he received generous compensation 1 Thomas Donnelly, Margaret Roth, and Caleb Baker, Operation Just Cause: The Storming of Panama (New York: Lexington Books, 1991), 22.
