No full textThis project seeks to utilize the Catholic Church’s wisdom tradition to support a human-centered response to technological unemployment. The loss of jobs to various forms of technology is a serious concern, especially to those made redundant by technology who cannot find comparable employment. Although job loss to technology is not a new phenomenon, prior economic cycles were very different and cannot provide a solid foundation for planning future responses. The United States unemployment assistance program has been the same for almost fifty years, and the pace of technological change in society has far outraced it. What options exist to ameliorate job loss that can support the worker primarily as an individual worthy of concern and support? Approaching this problem with the fundamentals of the Papal Encyclicals and Catholic Social Teaching (CST) would allow all interested parties to view the situation from a truly human perspective. The Catholic values of human dignity, solidarity, and subsidiarity can serve as the foundation of new government support programs like universal basic income (UBI). Various UBI projects have shown the value of an approach that allows individuals increased agency over the assistance they receive as it is a more efficient and targeted way to help those in need while affirming their dignity. Acknowledging the potential benefits gained from this overlooked intersection of the secular and the spiritual will profoundly affect all people in this age of rapidly advancing technology
Dervish Oral Poetry in Somalia: A Study in Semiotic Chora
No full textLines of verse sometimes live in the shadows of societies, cherished for gracefully bending ears with melodic imagery. Yet, Somali poetry defiantly lived outside shadows for centuries. While pastoral communities customarily use oration for historiography and storytelling, purposeful and complex oral poetry coursed through the veins of each Somali, creating a silent, formless unity. This research pinpoints the inseparable existence of Somali people from Islam, clan identity, and poetic language by analyzing poetic action from the anti-colonial Dervish Movement of 1899-1920. Using psychoanalyst and philosopher Julia Kristeva’s scholarship on poetic action, Somali poetry is used to attempt a pursuit of semiotic chora— the place where meaning is made. This research serves as an urgent acknowledgement and dialogue that Somali poetry holds keys to a reimagined polis
Acculturation Strategies of Cold War and Post-Soviet Immigrants in the United States
No full textThis research investigates approaches to successfully facilitate acculturation of Russian immigrants into the American mainstream both during the Cold War and after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Primary research methods included interviews with Russian immigrants using a non-probability, snowball sampling technique. Secondary research reviewed scholarly books, autobiographies, journals, and dissertations on the topic of Russian immigrant acculturation. The research found that resilience, educational level, self-sufficiency, English fluency, religious affiliation, and whiteness were the most important contributing factors to successful acculturation. Freethought for the Masses: The Philosophy behind the Writings and Publications of Emanuel Haldeman-Julius
No full textBetween 1919 and 1951, the United States was bombarded with published and written content by Emanuel Haldeman-Julius. Based out of the small rural town of Girard, Kansas, Haldeman-Julius helped to reshape the publishing world with his methods and philosophically driven content. In the process he created the largest mail-order publishing house in the world, sold over 500 million copies of his Little Blue Book series that contained over 2,500 titles, and skirted controversy nearly every step of the way. His goals were lofty—1) bring knowledge to the masses one five cent pamphlet at a time and through his many other publications 2) increase awareness of the philosophy of freethought to as many people as possible by creating a platform for freethought publications written by authors who were freethinkers 3) and to alter the path of popular culture by focusing on the individual as an agent of change, which over time would potentially lead to a mass social movement led by a freethinking public that made decisions based on science and rationality, free of superstition and public pressure that is attached to a population where religious belief is found in the majority.Despite the immense success he had as a publisher and the influence he wielded over the American landscape during this time, since his death he has largely gone unnoticed by history and has been forgotten by popular culture in the United States. His efforts promoting the philosophy of freethought to a mass audience for an extended period gets little recognition. What little that has been written on him nearly always focuses on his Little Blue Book pamphlet series and how it radicalized the marketplace of cheap literature. The philosophy behind it all, that of freethought, is rarely connected to the finished product, his publications and his writing
