The Jamestown Bridge, 1940-2007
Construction of the Jamestown Bridge between Saunderstown in South County on mainland Rhode Island and Jamestown on Conanicut Island began in December of 1938. On 27 July 1940 – approximately nineteen months later – traffic began to flow across the bridge. Groundbreaking for the new Jamestown-Verrazzano Bridge took place on 9 September 1985 and the bridge was finally opened to traffic on 19 October 1992. The old Jamestown Bridge was closed and stood derelict for fourteen years. Preparation for demolition began in September of 2005. The major demolition events took place in 2006, and recycling and cleanup were completed by spring of 2007
Sobriety Checkpoints: The Case for Implementation in Rhode Island
A survey was prepared and conducted to investigate the viability of implementing sobriety checkpoints in Rhode Island. The survey was designed to make a comparison between a state which has found sobriety checkpoints to be constitutional, Massachusetts, and a state that has found sobriety checkpoints to be unconstitutional, Rhode Island. The survey\u27s findings indicate that Rhode Island would benefit from the implementation of sobriety checkpoints
Teaching Happiness: The Role of Positive Psychology in the Classroom
Happiness can be defined in various ways, and characterizing traits that reflect sustained happiness in an individual can be a daunting task. For the purpose of this paper, I propose that contentment regarding the past, satisfaction in the present, optimism about the future, as well as cultivating individual strengths and virtues will result in sustained happiness. Using findings from and relating to the field of positive psychology, I will suggest that these qualities can be fostered in students and will benefit students individually and ultimately society as a whole
