iWaste: Analyzing Apple\u27s Sustainable Technology Production

    Get PDF
Electronic waste is a global issue that has not received the attention it deserves; there is an enormous amount of e-waste from the rapid industrialization of many countries throughout the world. Apple is the largest technology company in the world, with the highest revenue and the largest number of products manufactured. Therefore, it is important to see what they are doing to mitigate their efforts to the electronic waste crisis that is expected to increase in the next seven years. Three policy options are examined in this paper to evaluate and determine how well Apple is following the goals within their 2022 Environmental Progress Report.https://digitalcommons.salve.edu/glo100/1004/thumbnail.jp

State Sponsorship of Self-Determination Movements: Does Sponsorship Really Lead to Autonomy Concessions?

    No full text
An analytical blind spot exists within the International Relations literature regarding the causal impacts that state sponsorship of self-determination movements has on the outcomes of intrastate conflicts. This gap in our collective knowledge is due in part to the trend within the existing literature to aggregate all forms of third-party intervention when conducting empirical analysis. Additionally, most scholars fail to distinguish self-determination movements with other forms of insurgency. This dissertation argues that the interaction of state sponsorship and self-determination movements are theoretically and operationally distinct from other forms of intervention and insurgencies warranting a disaggregation in empirical studies. This dissertation, through the creation of a novel dataset, provides such a study. The author finds that, contrary to the traditional assumptions surrounding third-party intervention in intrastate conflicts, sponsorship has little discernable causal impact on the granting or restricting of autonomy and independence rights

Aristotle and the Politicizing of Music

    Get PDF
Aristotle, an empiricist, took on the role of visionary in the final book of his Politics. Here, he argued that great emotions within music may resonate with the emotional function of the soul and encourage individuals to strive for virtue (arete) and happiness (eudaimonia). To the extent that this transformation occurs, to that extent the Constitution of Athens will move beyond its now-degenerate state

The Negative Impacts of Border Patrol On The Mental Health of Migrants

    Get PDF
The research in this paper is a deep dive into the actions of Border Patrol on migrants and refugees and their effects on the individual. This includes impacts on mental health, child development, resettlement prevention, and racism and discrimination within border patrol itself. To understand all of this and how wide reaching all of this goes there needs to be a reflection on the history and policies of Border Patrol and the Government behind it. The problem with patrolling our borders is that there are consequences on the U.S. as a nation and unintended consequences on those individuals migrating into the country. These individuals are Asylum-Seekers, Refugees, and migrants looking for assistance as well as the betterment of their current situations. Unfortunately, in our longing for self-reliance and an overall safer environment within the U.S., we have found that we are hurting those that our country was truly built on. How do border patrol agents and their actions affect migrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers? There are negative effects and impacts on mental health, child development, prevention of resettlement, and racism and discrimination. This is all because of the policies put in place, inadequate officer training, the current political divide, and the media portrayal of the refugee crisis in the country

Salve Regina University Hydroponic Growing Guide: Dolores Chive

    Get PDF
This Salve Regina Hydroponic Growing Guide describes the process of hydroponically growing Dolores Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) in a tower system. This grow guide is based on the research project completed by third year student, Hanna Lloyd, through the Hydroponic Practicum, during the 2023 spring semester. Dolores chives are an aromatic herb which grow as tall, thin, green, leaves. Chives thrive under direct light with nutrient-rich water, and propagate under grow lights in approximately 15 days. When grown in a hydroponic tower, chives can reach up to 12-20 inches in length. The following guide provides information on optimal pH, optimal nutrient levels, and optimal light/water exposure for growing chives hydroponically, as well as recommendations for future growers.https://digitalcommons.salve.edu/hydroponic_center/1004/thumbnail.jp

THE MEXICAN UNDERWORLD: An Exposé in Human Trafficking

    No full text
Human trafficking is a continuously growing issue around the world. Mexico is a known hotspot for this due to its geographic location between South and Central America and the United States. This not only incentivizes trafficking across borders but attracts thousands of immigrants to Mexico. This group is one of the most susceptible to human trafficking, meaning there are millions of immigrants being trafficked throughout Mexico. This policy paper outlines the main factors that aggravate the prevalence of this crime, such as migration, gender violence, organized crime, and corruption. Furthermore, it evaluates two protocols and a program instituted by the government to tackle this issue. After their analysis, certain recommendations are made to improve the existing protocols and target the issue. The concluding remarks center around the prevalence of human trafficking as a direct result of the increasing corruption levels in the country.https://digitalcommons.salve.edu/glo100/1001/thumbnail.jp

    No full text
For this issue, Professor John B. Hattendorf has created a new appendix to Alan and Mary M. Simpson’s reprinted article on “How Rochambeau Quartered His Army in Newport.” Professor Hattendorf ’s contribution, gleaned from recent scholarship on the French experience in Newport, is a “List of Modern Street Addresses and House Names of the Surviving Buildings Used by French Forces 1780-1781.” There are a number of houses and buildings extant in Newport today where French army officers lived during 1780-1781. In addition, for this issue, Professor Hattendorf has also compiled a listing of recent publications pertaining to the French in Newport, works that had not yet been published when the previous Newport History issue (2003-2004) on the topic, appeared. Professor Hattendorf served as Ernest J. King Professor of Maritime History at the Naval War College from 1984-2016. He was also Chairman of the Maritime History Department and Director, Naval War College Museum, 2003-2016. Since 2017, he has been Ernest J. King Professor Emeritus and special advisor at the Naval War College’s eponymous John B. Hattendorf Center for Maritime Historical Research. The recipient of many awards, he is the author or editor of more than fifty books

2023 Polarization Index Part I: Unpacking Perceptions of U.S. Polarization

    Get PDF
Polarization is both a buzzword and a tangible indicator of the state of our nation. We hear how polarized the American public is from our politicians, the media, and our friends and family. We have also experienced the effects of voter suppression, election denial, cancel culture, the January 6th attack on the Capitol, and congressional gridlock. This Polarization Index was created to help us better understand how polarized the American public is really. Grasping the ways in which we are polarized – to what degree and over what issues – and identifying the areas of bipartisan agreement, will give us a stronger foundation from which to make progress. The report presents data from a multitude of reputable sources to provide a holistic understanding of partisan polarization in the United States. All analyzed data is weighted to better represent the American public. This is Part I of four parts. It covers perceptions of the stability of U.S. democracy, perceptions of partisan polarization, and affective polarization. Part II (available in September 2023) tackles issue polarization, covering topics like the economy, climate change, and gun rights. Parts III and IV, which will be published by the end of 2023, cover the three branches of U.S. government, media and disinformation, and election integrity
