Handwritten History, 1765-1867: Correspondence of Great Americans from the Collections of the Newport Historical Society

    No full text
Today, hundreds of years later, the letters of great Americans provide interesting and fascinating glimpses into the most important personalities in our nation’s history. The letters in this article reveal an early America populated by real people who led real lives—sometimes extraordinary, but sometimes quite mundane. Long before the advent of social media such as Facebook, these letters disclose an interconnected world that seemed at once impossibly small and impossibly huge. Newport had its own part to play in this history. Leaders such as George Washington and John Adams visited the city and communicated directly with the inhabitants, addressing their concerns and thanking them for their patriotism. Today, this fragile handwritten history is preserved in the collections of the Newport Historical Society

The Implications of Male Circumcision on HIV Transmission

    Get PDF
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is one of the world’s biggest health threats. In 2010, 33.3 million adults and children were predicted to be living with HIV/AIDS. Although prevention methods such as abstinence, condoms, and fewer sexual partners will help to lower the number of people infected by HIV, they are not enough. Male circumcision may provide an extra prevention method to acquiring HIV. A correlation between male circumcision and HIV transmission was first discovered in areas in western and northern Africa where the male circumcision prevalence rates tend to be high and HIV prevalence tends to be low. The foreskin of the penis remains largely unkeratinized and thus more prone to microtrauma, tears, and ulcers which could increase the transmission of HIV. The foreskin also plays host to a high concentration of langerhans cells which have been shown to increase HIV transmission. Langerhans cells, which generally aid in immune responses to invading pathogens can bind HIV at a specific receptor site and deliver it to the lymph nodes. The HIV will then proliferate throughout the body. Studies show that male circumcision has the potential to decrease female to male transmission of HIV by 60%. Through mathematical modeling, case studies, and statistical analyses, it was found that male circumcision programs will be effective in lowering HIV incidence, prevalence, and death rates. The acceptability of a male circumcision program is relatively high in Sub-Saharan Africa and most specifically in Southern Africa, which has the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world. The cost-effectiveness and possible mass circumcision program implementation were also examined and found to be positive influences. Male circumcision although useful in preventing HIV, must be used in conjunction only with other HIV prevention methods

The Canterbury Tales: Chaucer\u27s Respectful Critique of Church Officials and Their Abuse of Power

    Get PDF
Geoffrey Chaucer was a religious poet-diplomat in 14th century England and as such was in a unique position at court. He used his work, The Canterbury Tales, to critique certain church officials and their practices, which he believed had become more for monetary gain than for the service of the people

The Development of a Comprehensive Mechanism for Intracellular Calcium Oscillations: A Theoretical Approach and an Experimental Validation

    Get PDF
Calcium is an important second messenger for cellular communication. Theoretical models help scientists understand its signalling mechanism. A comprehensive model was developed in order to minimize any limitations in the models currently presented in the literature. Experimental results support the model and therefore the theoretical model provides a plausible explanation of the dynamics of the calcium-signaling mechanism. In the future, additional verification will be performed using various experimental configurations on PC12 cells. Further, the model will be used to predict the response of cells to environmental factors such as pesticides and heavy metals

Questioning Objectivity in Mainstream Broadcast Journalism: The Value of Subjectivity on The View

    Get PDF
The View on ABC has varying reputations. Although it has received Emmys and is critically acclaimed, many viewers discredit the discussions on the show because of the strong personalities and dissenting opinions. By looking at episodes of The View between 2009 and 2010—particularly surrounding Rihanna’s altercations with Chris Brown and her GQ photo shoot—the co-hosts provide varying opinions and interpretations that become useful to viewers who are developing their own views about the subject. Furthermore, the useful discussions on The View validate the subjective news model as a whole because unlike objectivity, subjectivity provides the opportunity for co-hosts and viewers to analyze images and representations in the media otherwise not mentioned. Through an application of Stuart Hall and Julie D’Acci of examples on The View, the viewers and their interpretations become important, and subjectivity becomes a more credible model. The View stands as an example of how subjectivity is valuable because it allows for opinions otherwise mitigated by objective news sources
