Development and Evaluation of a Mouse Neocortical Cells Neurodevelopment Assay to Assess the Effects of Pyrethroids
Pyrethroid insecticides have been used for more than 40 years and account for 25% of the global insecticide market with household, agricultural and public health applications. With increasing use of pyrethroids over recent years, human exposure to these chemicals is likely. The acute toxicity of pyrethroids to mammalian adults has been documented as moderately toxic by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. However, little evidence is available regarding the potential toxicological effects of pyrethroids on mammalian neurodevelopment. In this study, a neurodevelopment assay was developed for future investigation of potential pyrethroid effects on the neuronal development of Mus musculus neocortical cells
Missing the Trees for the Forest? Learning Environments Versus Learning Techniques in Simulations
Institutions of higher learning are increasingly asked to defend curricular and pedagogical outcomes. Faculty must demonstrate that simulations are productive tools for learning, but a review of the literature shows that the evidence of their effectiveness is inconclusive, despite their popularity in the classroom. Simulations may in fact help students learn, but the pedagogical benefits of simulations may be being attributed too generally to the learning environments that they supposedly produce, rather than the specific learning modalities that occur within them. The paper concludes with a recommendation that educators choose particular learning techniques first, and then build simulations around these techniques, rather than the reverse
Darkness in the City of Light: The Great Roundup of 1942 & France’s Role in the Shoah.
This thesis explores the incident of the Vel d\u27Hiv Roundup in Paris in July of 1942. The author drawing upon three focuses of study-- majors in History, Religious & Theological Studies, and a French minor-- attempts to show how the Holocaust impacted a nation who\u27s national motto is Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act: Why It Is Important for Women’s Health
President Barack Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) on March 23, 2010 ending the long history of disparity in access to health care services between insured and uninsured persons. Disparity between women and men in obtaining health insurance coverage is also corrected in the act. Women’s organizations that have focused attention on women’s distinctive health needs over the past century and a half laid the foundation for provisions in the legislation that address women’s health. This article addresses health insurance coverage, its impact on health, the particular challenges women have confronted in seeking coverage, and the impact of the ACA on these issues. Mary Fanning is assistant professor of business at Notre Dame of Maryland University where she teaches graduate courses in health care administration. She holds a doctorate in public policy from University of Maryland, Baltimore County
