A pilot study of a vendor provided automated essay scoring system was conducted in a Business Law class of 27 students. Students answered a business law fact pattern question which was reviewed and graded by the textbook vendor utilizing artificial intelligence software. Students were surveyed on their use, satisfaction, perceptions and technical issues utilizing the Write Experience automated essay scoring (AES) software. The instructor also chronicles the adoption, set up and use of an AES. Also detailed are the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing such software in an undergraduate course environment where some students may not be technologically adept or may lack motivation to experiment with a new testing procedure

Orin Bullock and the Restoration of the Great Friends Meeting House

    No full text
In 1967, Sydney and Catharine Wright purchased the Great Friends Meeting House in Newport and invited Antoinette Downing and Orin M. Bullock Jr. to work on the restoration. In the United States, Downing and Bullock were two of the most knowledgeable and experienced people in colonial architecture and the preservation field at that time. They worked with a team that included the owners, researchers, architects, church members, and a renowned archaeologist. The team documented the history of the building and the surrounding property, and investigated the building’s physical characteristics. They worked together for more than four years to gather as much physical evidence as possible and come to an agreement on the period to which the building should be restored. This article will show the process that Orin Bullock used to restore the Meeting House and his adherence to the documented standards of the day. It will also show his dedication to the theory of adaptive reuse, his goal to document every detail of the historical, physical, and archaeological research conducted on the property, and his intention to maintain the integrity of the building at all cost. Orin Bullock brought all of his knowledge of restoration architecture to bear on this project and would not lower or compromise his standards during the process that was eventually completed in 1975

    Get PDF
This study investigates how international media covered a “first” event of its kind: the election of Iceland’s first female, and the world’s first openly gay, prime minister, Johanna Sigurdardottir. A qualitative content analysis examines if media framed Iceland’s new leader as a leader, a specifically female leader, or a specifically gay female leader. The findings provide insight regarding how media frame international female politicians in the 21st century, and the corresponding opportunities and challenges

Is Snow White Still the Fairest of Them All? How Once Upon A Time Reinvents the Image of the Disney Princess

A modern fairy tale drama on the ABC network, Once Upon A Time recasts the animated Disney princesses as live-action heroines. Building on Disney scholars\u27 research, I study how the company uses synergy to establish a connection between a primetime television show and a children\u27s franchise. Through a textual analysis of the show\u27s main princess, Snow White, I discover that Once Upon A Time\u27s Snow White establishes a more modern, dynamic image of the original princess, indicating that the Disney Company is moving in a new direction. However, the show still preserves the character\u27s status as a traditional Disney princess who upholds the company\u27s brand

Sméagol Versus Gollum: The Bridge Between Fantasy and Reality: Applying Jungian Psychology to Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings

    Get PDF
Many literary critics have observed Tolkien\u27s work through biographical, allegorical, and source analyzing perspectives. Few scholars have considered the significance of Gollum. The complexity of Gollum is revealed through a Jungian lens and, although he is a fictional character, he may not be so far removed from reality. This character\u27s split personality, as determined by the Ring, presents what could eventually become of man if he is not strong enough to resist that which has the potential to consume him. In other words, the worst version of the human condition is presented through Gollum and his internal conflict. He provides a new perspective of one\u27s myth or higher purpose. Gollum may have a larger role in The Lord of the Rings, for good or ill, than even Gandalf predicts
