    Harmonious Healthcare Teams: What Healthcare Professionals Can and Cannot Learn from Chamber Musicians

    Background: As healthcare becomes increasingly team based, we need new ways of educating trainees to be collaborative team members. One approach is to look to other professions that have developed highly effective ways of collaborating. Doctors have already turned to musicians for specific lessons; however, as of yet, there has been little empirical study of the ways that musicians interact in ensembles, or analysis of how this might provide insights for healthcare. Our hypothesis is that healthcare teams might learn from understanding collaborative practices of chamber musicians.Methods and Findings: We undertook an exploratory study of professional musicians playing in non-conducted ensembles. We used semi-structured interviews to explore factors the musicians considered important for effective group function. The interviews were transcribed and coded thematically. We identified three prominent themes that have relevance for healthcare teams.Conclusions: The highly individual nature of each musical group’s identity suggests that a focus on generic interprofessional education skills development may be insufficient. Furthermore, musicians’ understanding of the fundamental role of non-melodic parts provides the possibility of more nuanced leadership models. Finally, essential differences between musicians’ interactions in rehearsals and performances highlight the importance of varied forms of group interactions

    Action, Reflection, and Evolution: A Pilot Implementation of Interprofessional Education across Three Rehabilitation Disciplines

    Background: Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is accepted as standard practice in healthcare. Because of this expectation, there is an increased need for growth in interprofessional education (IPE). Despite this need, the scholarship of IPE is limited. To better understand the challenges of IPE and improve on future endeavours, this article describes an IPE collaboration that was less successful, and the conclusions drawn from team reflection regarding IPE. We report on the challenges and the lessons learned.Methods and Findings: After one year of an IPE pilot project, the research team conducted a reflection exercise involving three iterations: 1) initial group meeting to discuss reflection questions, 2) individual review of meeting notes, 3) subsequent group meeting to confirm accuracy of the data. The confirmed data were then analyzed using thematic analysis.Conclusions: The key themes that emerged regarding the limited success of the pilot were focused on communication—between members of the research team, with the students, and with other faculty impacted by the pilot. Recommendations regarding improvements to facilitate future IPE initiatives are discussed. The summary conclusion of our exercise acknowledged that as IP educators we must remain vigilant to demonstrate IPC in the same manner as we teach it

    Internalizing Client-Centredness in Occupational Therapy Students

    Background: Pre-licensure interprofessional education prepares students for collaborative client-centred practice. However, most interprofessional educational efforts are aimed at developing the collaborative component of practice. The purpose of this article is to share the findings of a study that explored occupational therapy students’ client-centred development, in order to inform other pre-licensure educators about integrating client-centredness into uni- and interprofessional education contexts.Methods and Findings: Twenty-nine participants were recruited from each of three stages assumed to be representative of occupational therapy client-centred development in each of the two years of the educational program and during the first year of practice. Semi-structured focus groups were used to capture the participants’ experiences. The core emergent theme, internalizing client-centredness, included three main processes: identifying occupational therapy as a client-centred profession, engaging in the push and pull of client-centredness, and defining self as a client-centred practitioner.Conclusions: Educators of pre-licensure health care students should deliberately focus on client-centredness in their uni- and interprofessional education curricula; the authors offer examples of curricular opportunities focused on internalizing client-centredness. Enabling health care students to internalize client-centredness may be an important aspect of developing practitioners who are prepared to enact interprofessional collaboration for client-centred practice

    Observed Interprofessional Collaboration (OIPC) During Interdisciplinary Team Meetings: Development and Validation of a Tool in a Rehabilitation Setting

    Background: Despite all the efforts made in the past few years, interprofessional collaboration (IPC) in clinical settings is not always optimal. In addition, there are only a few instruments that healthcare managers and practitioners can use to evaluate the quality of IPC practice. Therefore, we developed an observationbased tool to evaluate IPC interactional factors occurring during interdisciplinary team meetings, and we examined the initial validation of the tool in a rehabilitation setting.Methods and Findings: The items were developed and pre-tested iteratively by construct experts (N = 7) and non-experts (N = 4). Interrater reliability was determined between two observers, following the analysis of 30 video recordings of meetings in two rehabilitation centres involving a total of 152 participants. An observation grid (OIPC) consisting of 20 items that can be answered on a threepoint scale and demonstrating acceptable interrater reliability was developed.Conclusions: The OIPC is a tool aimed at evaluating IPC interactional factors during interdisciplinary meetings based on team performance rather than individual behaviours. It can be useful for healthcare managers and practitioners who want to evaluate the quality of IPC practices

    HIV and Rehabilitation Training Needs of Health Professionals in Canada: Results of a National Survey

    Background: People with HIV experience a range of health-related challenges that rehabilitation services are well-positioned to address. The purpose of this study was to explore professional knowledge and views about HIV rehabilitation among HIV specialists and rehabilitation professionals in Canada.Methods and Findings: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional postal survey with a random sample of rehabilitation professionals (physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and physiatrists) (N = 1058) and the known population of HIV specialists (physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, psychologists, and dietitians) in Canada (N = 214). Two-thirds (67%) of rehabilitation professionals disagreed that rehabilitation professionals possess adequate knowledge and skills to assess and treat people living with HIV. The majority of all respondent groups felt that rehabilitation professionals who work with people living with HIV require specialized HIV training. Approximately one-third (32%) of rehabilitation professionals who had served people living with HIV stated they received some HIV training as part of their professional degree.Conclusions: This was the first national survey to explore HIV specialist and rehabilitation professionals’ knowledge and views about HIV rehabilitation. Findings indicate the need for interprofessional education, training, and mentorship of health professionals to address the gap between the needs of people living with HIV and rehabilitation services provision

    Becoming a Nursing and Social Work Student: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis of Interprofessional Education

    Background: The call for interprofessional nursing and social work education in the United Kingdom has led to the development of a singularly integrated nursing and social work degree. Although evidence exists to highlight the impact of this degree in practice, details of the experience of interprofessional nursing and social work education have not been studied in equal depth.Methods and Findings: Guided by the tenets of interpretive phenomenological analysis, six students who had recently completed the first year of a nursing and social work degree were asked to describe their experiences of interprofessional education. The dominant theme that emerged from analysis highlighted the importance of providing students with a bespoke curriculum, which could communicate their full and inclusive integration. Where this was not achieved, students explained that they could become confused by increased workloads and a sense of separatism.Conclusions: When combining nursing and social work into a single degree, pedagogic strategies must be confidently prepared to deliver a specific interprofessional nursing and social work curriculum. Above all, this curriculum must demonstrate an integrated philosophy and distinctive orientation to inclusive interprofessional education

    Attributes of Effective Interprofessional Placement Facilitation

    Background: The quality of facilitation is an important influence on the efficacy of interprofessional education (IPE) delivery. The research objective was to increase understanding of the attributes of effective facilitation of students during external IPE placements in primary care situations.Methods and Findings: A thematic analysis of the experiences of academics, students, and placement-site staff at three placement sites was employed to explore participants’ perceptions of the attributes of effective IPE facilitators. These attributes included experience in an interprofessional context, together with an understanding of the specific clinical and assessment requirements of different disciplines. Facilitators also needed empathy with respect to the requirements of the external IPE placement sites and the ability to liaise between student and site needs.Conclusions: Models of IPE placement facilitation were most effective when, while following general principles, facilitators tailored them specifically for the individual situations of the placement sites and the learning requirements of particular groups of students. The most rewarding IPE learning experiences occurred when IPE facilitators provided sufficient clinical opportunities for students to work collaboratively with individual clients, provided the students perceived that their participation was relevant to their own discipline. &nbsp

    Introducing Interprofessional Education and Care Concepts in a Geriatric Multilevel Centre: Development and Introduction of a Toolkit for Staff and Students

    Background: Although interprofessional education (IPE) is not new, there has been limited research in IPE focused on the care of older adults. The objective of this study was to develop and implement an interprofessional education and care (IPE/C) toolkit, to help staff and students understand and apply the concepts of IPE/C.Methods and Findings: Focus groups identified staff and students’ understanding of IPE/C and informed development of an IPE/C toolkit comprised of IPE/C tools and resources. Five clinical teams (N = 51) attended workshops that introduced the toolkit and educated teams about IPE/C. Focus group participants had heard of but had limited exposure to IPE/C. Responses to the Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams (ATHT) questionnaire indicated a positive trend on all questions; 2 questions in subscale 1 were statistically significant (p = .01 & p = .005), indicating a positive attitude toward teams and teamwork. Several limitations were identified, including inconsistent attendance at workshops, scheduling challenges, and limited physician participation.Conclusions: This pilot project provided baseline data on staff and students’ understanding of and attitudes toward IPE/C in a multilevel geriatric centre and demonstrated that an IPE/C toolkit delivered via team workshops can enhance healthcare team attitudes. Next steps include expanding the rollout to other teams and introducing the toolkit to all staff and students

    Tutor Experiences with Facilitating Interprofessional Problem-Based Learning

    Background: This article describes tutors’ experiences with facilitating interprofessional problem-based learning (iPBL), a topic rarely discussed in the literature. We examined tutors’ perceptions of what it was like to tutor iPBL, including the rewarding and challenging aspects. We also reported differences between new and experienced tutors.Methods and Findings: The data presented in this article were collected using three versions of a paper-and-pencil survey (N = 77, N = 99, and N = 97 for each version of the survey, respectively) and six focus groups. Surveys were completed at the conclusion of iPBL modules. Both quantitative and qualitative results indicated that tutors found the experience of facilitating iPBL to be rewarding and encountered few challenges. Tutors felt the training they received prepared them well to tutor. They also felt that facilitating iPBL increased their knowledge in the topic area of the iPBL module and of other professional roles, that it enhanced their skills as facilitators, and that they enjoyed observing students learn. New tutors reported significantly more learning and skill development than experienced tutors.Conclusions: Four lessons were derived from our research: 1) use iPBL to offer IPE; 2) invest in tutor training and support; 3) help tutors trust the process; and 4) consider tutor recruitment and retention strategies

    The QUIPPED Project: Students’ Attitudes Toward Integrating Interprofessional Education into the Curriculum

    Background: Healthcare learners are the future healthcare providers. The preparationthey receive in their pre-registration programs will be vital to ensuring that they practice patient-centred care. One approach to this learning model is interprofessional education (IPE).Methods and Findings: Learner attitudes towards interprofessional education and practice were obtained over a thirty-three month period from the Queen’s University Inter-Professional Patient-centred Education Direction (QUIPPED) project. Attitudes were measured by questionnaires based on a 6-point Likert scale. The learners received a number of opportunities to engage in IPE and demonstrated positive attitudes. The degree to which one or more educational initiatives can make a difference in attitude is limited. However, over the course of the project both statistically significant and clinically meaningful differences were found. Different health professional student groups, including medical, medical radiation technology, nursing, occupational therapy, and physical therapy learners varied in their attitudinal responses, demonstrating they have already acquired professional identity.Conclusions: Recommendations include offering varied opportunities to learners, and providing them with the tools to communicate and collaborate together. Limitations include a lack of empirical evidence as to whether IPE translates into interprofessional practice and better patient-centred care
