Looking back to look forward: setting future research agenda for international business in textiles and clothing industry
Since its development by Tinbergen (1962), the gravity model of international trade has widely been applied to analyse the effect of various factors on trade relationships between countries. Past studies on trade gravity vary not only in the mix of model variables but also in how they have come into the analysis. This study reviews existing literature on bilateral trade with an aim to identify influential predictors such as changes of trade policy and national development strategy and highlight important yet understudied factors such as transport and logistics infrastructure, and sustainable development. To demonstrate the needs to examine these critical factors across industry sectors, the study presents the case of textiles and clothing (T&C) production and trade between China and its trading partners as an illustration. Through the literature review, it shows how the gravity model can be applied to address current issues in international trade arena such as the potential trade war between the US and China, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and other important factors shaping global T&C trade. This study offers future research directions for analysis of global trade in the T&C industry and contributes to the wider literature of international business and trade
Social Innovation through sustainable initiatives: Renewing value of timber waste through up-cycling and co-creation with mentally disabled rehabilitation candidates
The project describes design students learning sustainability in a tertiary institute setting. A class was engaged in a live collaborative project with an NGO where they were asked to work with mentally disabled collaborators in designing, making and marketing of original upcycled products in Hong Kong. By understanding sustainable design and its importance for the future, design students apply principles learned and gained first-hand experience in seeing the potential of sustainable designs. The intention was to embed strong awareness of sustainability to all participants. Students, mentally disabled and their carers, wooden waste suppliers, as well as teaching staff were the main stakeholders in this project. Students explored ways in which design can create environmental, social and economic value for the NGO. The methodology used to assess project effectiveness involved making direct observations and post-project stakeholder interviews. These methods shed light on the appropriateness of project design, environmental, and economic outcomes of the project. Over the course of a 14 week semester, students learned how to conduct waste material exploration, co-design, iterative design, prototype testing, hands-on making and branding/marketing. Upon post project review, students felt achieving effective collaboration with mentally disabled was the biggest challenge, while embracing sustainable design principles through making upcycled products was considered a stimulating journey. Overall, they were able to answer project objectives and to achieve positive outcomes in this project

Inclusive sand-shoeing training program for students with and without intellectual disabilities in Hong Kong
One of the sports for the Special Olympics is snow-shoeing. In Hong Kong training for this sport occurs in the sand and is called sand-shoeing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a sandshoeing training program (STP) of the Special Olympics Hong Kong (SOHK). Two hundreds and thirty-two Grade 1 to 12 special school students with intellectual disabilities (ID), and 66 university students without ID participated in the STP. Three different types of survey were designed for students with ID, university students, and special school teachers. Descriptive data from the feedback of these three parties on the STP were analyzed. Results from 134 students with ID showed that 97.8% of them enjoyed taking part in the STP with the university students. Results also indicated that the special school teachers strongly agreed that the STP helped their students to learn the basic skills required for sand-shoeing (68.42%), enhanced students\u27 social ability (73.68%), and building a healthy lifestyle (73.68%). A total of 78.4% of the university students expressed that they learned the skills on better communication with individuals with ID in this program. In conclusion, the STP demonstrated a successful example of inclusive sport program for the HKSO to further promote unified sports
A comprehensive review of anaerobic digestion of organic solid wastes in relation to microbial community and enhancement process
© 2018 Society of Chemical Industry Organic solid wastes (OSWs) should be regarded as valuable resources rather than dead-end landfill waste that causes public health and odor concerns. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an ideal approach for managing organic solid waste issues and involves using a group of anaerobic microorganisms to transform OSWs into useful products. In this review, over 100 publications related to AD of OSWs have been compiled, discussed, and analyzed. A comprehensive analysis of the environmental and safety impacts of AD, its key environmental factors, co-digestion, and pretreatment, as well as the AD of OSWs by various anaerobic microbes uncovered by high throughput sequencing-based approaches, is presented. The purpose of this review is to provide an outline of the current knowledge of AD processes from a multi-angle perspective. A comprehensive understanding of AD of OSWs and genome-enabled biology development could be helpful for providing up-to-date knowledge of AD, developing it, overcoming its drawbacks and, ultimately, improving global waste control for more efficient environmental management. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry
Study of behavior of plastic modified bitumen by incorporating carbon black
In recent years, the performance of polymer modified bitumen has been widely studied. This study reports a research carried out to investigate the properties of polymer modified bitumen (PMB) by using polypropylene as modifier, carbon black as additives, to examine the optimum ratio of polypropylene to carbon black. With this objective, sample preparation using wet mixing method combining high shear mix was firstly performed. Subsequently, 18 samples were developed for the study, of which the polypropylene (PP) contents 10%, 12%, 14%, 16%, 18% and 20% with 2%, 3%, 4% of carbon black content. Afterwards, samples were characterized by standard tests (Dynamic Shear Rheometer and Viscosity), and all the test results showed improved performance. Finally, the results concluded that the optimum binder-PP ratio PMB for applying is 14% PP with 3% carbon black
Characterisation of diesel vehicle emissions and determination of remote sensing cutpoints for diesel high-emitters.
Diesel vehicles are a major source of air pollutants in cities and have caused significant health risks to the public globally. This study used both on-road remote sensing and transient chassis dynamometer to characterise emissions of diesel light goods vehicles. A large sample size of 183 diesel vans were tested on a transient chassis dynamometer to evaluate the emission levels of in-service diesel vehicles and to determine a set of remote sensing cutpoints for diesel high-emitters. The results showed that 79% and 19% of the Euro 4 and Euro 5 diesel vehicles failed the transient cycle test, respectively. Most of the high-emitters failed the NO limits, while no vehicle failed the HC limits and only a few vehicles failed the CO limits. Vehicles that failed NO limits occurred in both old and new vehicles. NO/CO2 ratios of 57.30 and 22.85 ppm/% were chosen as the remote sensing cutpoints for Euro 4 and Euro 5 high-emitters, respectively. The cutpoints could capture a Euro 4 and Euro 5 high-emitter at a probability of 27% and 57% with one snapshot remote sensing measurement, while only producing 1% of false high-emitter detections. The probability of high-emitting events was generally evenly distributed over the test cycle, indicating that no particular driving condition produced a higher probability of high-emitting events. Analysis on the effect of cutpoints on real-driving diesel fleet was carried out using a three-year remote sensing program. Results showed that 36% of Euro 4 and 47% of Euro 5 remote sensing measurements would be detected as high-emitting using the proposed cutpoints
