    This session includes two catalyst case studies and student research poster presentations. The THEi-Swinburne University Project showcases the successful collaboration between two applied degree institutes (Hong Kong and Australia) which involved students, educators and industry working on ‘real-world’ innovations in product design. The Global Partners European Alliance showcases an alliance comprising six universities (UK, US, Germany, Switzerland) to enable innovation and improvements in learning environments, educational experiences, and outcomes for the students, faculty, community partners and stakeholders. This is followed by THEi Student Applied Research Symposium Poster Presentation, a showcase by a selection of THEi students of their final year industry-focused applied research projects

    Vibration and Buckling Characteristics of Functionally Graded Graphene Nanoplatelets Reinforced Composite Beams with Open Edge Cracks

    This paper investigates the free vibration and compressive buckling characteristics of functionally graded graphene nanoplatelets reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) beams containing open edge cracks by using the finite element method. The beam is a multilayer structure where the weight fraction of graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) remains constant in each layer but varies along the thickness direction. The effective Young’s modulus of each GPLRC layer is determined by the modified Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model while its Poisson’s ratio and mass density are predicted according to the rule of mixture. The effects of GPLs distribution pattern, weight fraction, geometry, crack depth ratio (CDR), slenderness ratio as well as boundary conditions on the fundamental frequency and critical buckling load of the FG-GPLRC beam are studied in detail. It was found that distributing more GPLs on the top and bottom surfaces of the cracked FG-GPLRC beam provides the best reinforcing effect for improved vibrational and buckling performance. The fundamental frequency and critical buckling load are also considerably affected by the geometry and dimension of GPL nanofillers

    Tuning the Acidity of Pt/CNTs Catalysts for Hydrodeoxygenation of Diphenyl Ether

    We herein present a method for the synthesis of HNbWO6, HNbMoO6, HTaWO6 solid acid nanosheet modified Pt/CNTs. By varying the weight of various solid acid nanosheets, a series of Pt/xHMNO6/CNTs with different solid acid compositions (x = 5, 20 wt%; M = Nb, Ta; N = Mo, W) have been prepared by carbon nanotube pretreatment, protonic exchange, solid acid exfoliation, aggregation and finally Pt particles impregnation. The Pt/xHMNO6/CNTs are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and NH3-temperature programmed desorption. The study revealed that HNbWO6 nanosheets were attached on CNTs, with some edges of the nanosheets being bent in shape. The acid strength of the supported Pt catalysts increases in the following order: Pt/CNTs \u3c Pt/5HNbWO6/CNTs \u3c Pt/20HNbMoO6/CNTs \u3c Pt/20HNbWO6/CNTs \u3c Pt/20HTaWO6/CNTs. In addition, the catalytic hydroconversion of lignin-derived model compound: diphenyl ether using the synthesized Pt/20HNbWO6 catalyst has been investigated

    Self-dissatisfaction versus political frustrations: Analysis of radicalism among Hong Kong youth

    There have been raising concerns about the radicalization of Hong Kong youths in recent years. With reference to the frustration-aggression hypothesis, this study examined the relative importance of personal vs political grievances in explaining the support for radical protests. A sample of 792 cases were surveyed among students aged 17-30 from two local tertiary institutions. Regression analysis showed that political frustrations accounted for more impacts than frustrations about their personal situations (self-dissatisfaction) on their support to radicalism. Interestingly, dissatisfaction towards the Hong Kong government was no longer a significant determinant after controlling the variables of their views towards the Central government and Chinese identity

    Investigation of factors affecting the gaseous and particulate matter emissions from diesel vehicles

    © 2019, Springer Nature B.V. This study presents a detailed investigation of diesel vehicle emissions utilizing chassis dynamometer testing. The recruited vehicle fleet consists of 15 in-use diesel vehicles, spanning a wide range of emission standards, engine sizes, weight, model year, etc. The real-time emission concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx), total hydrocarbons (THC), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2), and the mass of particulate matter (PM) collected on filters are measured and used to calculate the vehicle emission factors (EFs) under various driving conditions. Results show that in general EFs of NOx, CO, THC, and PM of the recruited fleet span a wide range of values (NOx 0.80 ± 0.34 to 60.28 ± 2.94 g kg−1; THC 0.10 ± 0.04 to 5.28 ± 1.28 g kg−1; CO below detection limits to 24.01 ± 8.48 g kg−1; PM below detection limits to 2.47 ± 1.22 g kg−1). Further data analysis shows that the implementation of a higher emission standard has a significant effect on reducing the emission of pollutants, except for NOx. Driving conditions are also important factors affecting the EFs. Besides, statistical analysis shows a significant correlation between EFs of NOx with the testing weight and the maximum engine power of the vehicle. Further investigation is recommended to explore the effect of maintenance of the vehicles to the vehicular emission

    Effects of using four baskets during simulated youth basketball games

This study aimed to identify how playing basketball with two additional baskets influences the players\u27 technical, physiological, physical and especially, positional performance. Fourteen youth players performed eight 5vs.5 simulated basketball games, four with the two official baskets and four with two-extra official baskets, each one placed in the court restricted area. The variables collected were technical (field-goals made and missed, offensive and defensive rebounds, steals, passes, dribble-drive, give-and-go and ball possessions), physiological (heart rate monotony and sample entropy), workload (total distance covered and distance covered at different velocities) and positioning-related (distance to the nearest opponent, distance to the nearest teammate, stretch-index and distance between centroids). The results showed that the four-baskets games favoured the emergence of individual behaviours, increasing the game\u27 physical demands and promoting a collective dispersion, which might impair team playing. Conversely, when playing with two-baskets, there was less distance between teammates. In conclusion, this study has clear implications for practice as it emphasizes that coaches can manipulate the number of baskets to modulate training workload and promote different individual and team behaviours
