    Techno-economic evaluation of a biorefinery applying food waste for sophorolipid production – A case study for Hong Kong

    © 2020 Elsevier Ltd This study evaluates the techno-economic feasibility of sophorolipid (SL) production process that co-utilizes food waste, glucose and oleic acid as substrates. Two variables are considered in terms of (a) Plant construction: Purchasing equipment either from the US or Mainland China and (b) Production: to produce SL crystals (about 97% active) or a concentrated SL liquid/syrup (about 78% active). Hence, four scenarios are generated: Scenario I: equipment made in the USA + SL crystals; Scenario II: equipment made in the USA + SL syrup; Scenario III: equipment made in China + SL crystals; Scenario IV: equipment made in China + SL syrup. It is found that all scenarios are economically feasible and Scenario I has the highest net profit. Scenario III has the highest internal rate of return, net present value and the shortest payback period at a 7% discount rate. Finally, comparison of food waste-related techno-economic studies was conducted

    Biochar Adsorption of Antibiotics and its Implications to Remediation of Contaminated Soil

    © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. Antibiotic contamination in water and soil has been widely investigated. However, there is still no effective removal method for antibiotics from water or soil environments. Therefore, the single and competitive sorption dynamics of ionizable tetracycline (TC), sulfamethazine (SMZ), norfloxacin (NOR), erythromycin (ERY), and chloramphenicol (CAP) adsorbed by NaOH-activated and hematite-modified biochars were investigated. NaOH-activated biochar (NAB) showed much better antibiotic sorption than the hematite-modified biochar (HMB). The affinity coefficient of NAB for TC, NOR, and ERY were at least 100 times higher than that of the HMB. The sorption rate of the five target antibiotics was faster in the single-solute systems than in the ternary-solute systems. Sorption capacity was inhibited in the competitive system for all five antibiotics adsorbed by either the NaOH-activated or hematite-modified biochars. Antibiotic sorption by the biochars was governed by electrostatic interactions, π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interactions, and hydrogen bonding. All five antibiotics showed similar adsorption trends in pH treatments of both biochars. However, the sorption capacity slightly increased from pH 7 to pH 9 in HMB compared with those in NAB, as the metal ions from the hematite modification provided cation bridging combinations to negatively charged antibiotics at a high pH value. These observations are useful for producing NaOH-activated biochar as an engineered sorbent to reduce the bioavailability of antibiotics in water and soil. The results are important for the application of biochars to use as soil amendments in the remediation of antibiotic co-pollution in agricultural water or soils

    Adaptive reuse of heritage architecture and its external effects on sustainable built environment—Hedonic pricing model and case studies in Hong Kong

    The integration of the sustainable development perspective into the discussion of heritage conservation by UNESCO in 2015 represents an acknowledgement of the values of heritage conservation in the agenda of sustainable development. This paper aims to provide empirical evidence regarding how heritage conservation fits into the overall sustainable development in Hong Kong by examining the external effects generated by architectural heritage conservation onto their adjacent neighborhood. By two adaptive reuse heritage case studies with respective hedonic pricing analysis on their adjacent property prices, this paper presents the results of how residential property prices have been increased as a result of heritage adaptive reuse. The analysis suggests that an established heritage grading mechanism along with a socially inclusive conservation approach with community stakeholders not only maintains the authenticity of the cultural heritage, but also brings substantial social and economic benefits to the neighboring communities.     Debris flow enlargement from entrainment: A case study for comparison of three entrainment models

    Material entrainment can significantly magnify debris flow volume and increase its destructive power. Despite great research efforts, entrainment is still not well understood. To meet the needs for debris flow simulation and hazard analysis, it is of practical significance to understand and evaluate existing entrainment models. In this study, we evaluate three entrainment models on an integrated single-phase continuum debris flow simulation platform. The well-documented Tsing Shan debris flow in 1990 in Hong Kong, with an initial landslide volume of 2500 m3 and a final deposit volume of 20,400 m3, is used as a benchmark to compare the three models. The characteristics and performance of each model and its model parameters are discussed. Although numerical results achieve reasonable agreement with detailed field investigations, some parameters are still determined empirically and subjectively. Despite of the imperfection, these models can be used for debris flow hazard analysis in the Hong Kong region with similar conditions. More physically-based entrainment models considering two-phase flow need to be adopted and further developed in the future
