    Effective Learning Through Deep Learning, What Matters: Self, Others, Way of Thinking, and/or Design of Learning Environment?

    Deep learning is important for achieving deep knowledge, but traditional teaching often falls short of providing a deep learning environment for learners. This study reviews existing studies about deep learning to examine whether there is any convergence in the explanations and definitions of deep learning based on evidence-based research. Content analysis of the 299 articles reviewed resulted in a set of keywords that were in turn grouped into four main themes corresponding to four models of learning: social, personal, information processing, and behavioral. The findings of this study provide practical guidance to academics and practitioners to design for deep learning, with reference to the learner, to the peers, to the way of thinking, and to the design of the learning environment. In the past, research studies would focus on one specific perspective to find its relationship to deep learning. This study suggests that all the four perspectives could be considered together, whenever it is appropriate. This study also finds that deep learning is a choice: as an approach of learning. It suggests that it is not the learner who could not think deep, but whether the learning design could encourage learners to choose more the deep learning approach

    Textile wastewater treatment using a new type of BiOBr-derived photocatalytic membrane: A comparison with current state-of-the-art filtration technology

    Textile industry has been a large user of water and typically 0.2-0.5 m3 are needed to produce 1 kg of finished fabric product. The textile effluents of the dyeing and finishing processes usually contain 50-5,000 mg/L of chemical oxygen demand (COD), 200-300 mg/L biological oxygen demand (BOD) and 50-500 mg/L suspended solids, etc. During the dyeing process, because 10-15% of the dye is lost into wastewater, and the dye concentration could exceed 300 mg/L in the effluent from textile manufacturing. A number of pressure-drive membrane processes such as microfiltration, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis have been extensively studied to treat textile wastewater over the past decades at industrial scale. For example, reverse osmosis membranes are particularly suitable for removing ions and large species from dyebath effluents. The advantage is that the permeate can be made colorless and low in total salinity. Nanofiltration produces permeate with good quality and the water can be reused which usually meet with acceptable criteria. However, most of these methods face a major technical challenge in which they have low rejection rate, high fouling % and require high-pressure operation conditions. An emerging technique called the membrane distillation offers an advantageous combination of producing high quality water at nearly 100% rejection rate and low energy consumption. In this study, a type of BiOBr-derived photocatalytic membrane has been prepared using electrospinning synthesis to treat four common dyes with different surface charges used in textile industry. The BiOBr-derived photocatalytic membrane exhibited good flux recovery and attained good dye rejection rate under visible light exposure. Finally, a comparison of this technology with the current state-of-the-art filtration technology will be performed

    Advertising Education in Hong Kong: Perspectives from Industry Experts

    The advertising industry has been changed rapidly over the last decade due to the drastic impact of technological advancement. From conventional advertising, desktop-oriented digital advertising to mobile-centric interactive advertising, and until, nowadays, stronger focus on technology-based experiential advertising. Tertiary education institutes have been aware that advertising education can not only be limited to strategical and aesthetic training, but they are also struggling on the right mix of curriculum which can be close to the market change to enhance students’ work readiness. The aim of this study is to investigate the development of advertising practice and its impact on advertising education in Hong Kong. A focus group was conducted comprising five experts from education, advertising and branding design, advertising agency and marketing respectively, to understand the up to date practice of the advertising industry, the challenge between professional practice and education, and the recommendations to the future advertising education. The findings reveal that there is a severe evolution from shifting conventional advertising to digital, while advertisers nowadays find difficulties in looking for agencies which are competent to deliver through-the-line creative solution from strategic planning to execution level. Under the evolution of the advertising industry, the main challenge of advertising education is how to enable students to be well-equipped with technological advancement and their adaptability to changes. It is suggested to strive for a balance between educating students’ all-rounded strategic mindset, art direction and executional skillsets

    A Rapid, Simple, Inexpensive, and Mobile Colorimetric Assay COVID-19-LAMP for Mass On-Site Screening of COVID-19

    To control the COVID-19 pandemic and prevent its resurgence in areas preparing for a return of economic activities, a method for a rapid, simple, and inexpensive point-of-care diagnosis and mass screening is urgently needed. We developed and evaluated a one-step colorimetric reverse-transcriptional loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay (COVID-19-LAMP) for detection of SARS-CoV-2, using SARS-CoV-2 isolate and respiratory samples from patients with COVID-19 (n = 223) and other respiratory virus infections (n = 143). The assay involves simple equipment and techniques and low cost, without the need for expensive qPCR machines, and the result, indicated by color change, is easily interpreted by naked eyes. COVID-19-LAMP can detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA with detection limit of 42 copies/reaction. Of 223 respiratory samples positive for SARS-CoV-2 by qRT-PCR, 212 and 219 were positive by COVID-19-LAMP at 60 and 90 min (sensitivities of 95.07% and 98.21%) respectively, with the highest sensitivities among nasopharyngeal swabs (96.88% and 98.96%), compared to sputum/deep throat saliva samples (94.03% and 97.02%), and throat swab samples (93.33% and 98.33%). None of the 143 samples with other respiratory viruses were positive by COVID-19-LAMP, showing 100% specificity. Samples with higher viral load showed shorter detection time, some as early as 30 min. This inexpensive, highly sensitive and specific COVID-19-LAMP assay can be useful for rapid deployment as mobile diagnostic units to resource-limiting areas for point-of-care diagnosis, and for unlimited high-throughput mass screening at borders to reduce cross-regional transmission

    Stability analysis of rock wedge slide subjected to groundwater dynamic evolution

    Heavy rainfall may increase the infiltration rate, raising the groundwater table after a short period time. Variation in the hydrostatic pressure on potential sliding surfaces and trailing edges of fissures in a rock slope may contribute to slope failure. The failure mechanisms of rainfall-triggered rock wedge slides have been widely studied in the literature. However, studies on the dynamic evolution of groundwater in rock failure are still limited. In this study, a typical rock wedge slide that occurred in Chengkou County, Chongqing, China is selected as a case study to analyze the stability of rock wedge with double planes and tension crack subjected to groundwater dynamic evolution. Model tests were designed and performed to reproduce the dynamic evolution of groundwater in the rock slope and analyze its role in wedge failure. Development and distribution characteristics of water pressure are investigated through monitoring the water pressure distributed along the surfaces of wedge failures. From the experimental study, it is found that the initial formation process of water pressure along the sliding surface consists of four types of distribution patterns, i.e., triangular distribution, Type I trapezoidal distribution, Type II trapezoidal distribution, and Type III trapezoidal distribution. Based on the model tests and theoretical analysis, the order of the calculated safety factors of the Chengkou rock wedge slide are: triangle\u3etype I trapezoid\u3etype II trapezoid\u3etype III trapezoid. The existence of inflection points in the trapezoidal distribution mode significantly increases water pressure on both sides of rock wedge, which contributes instability. The new approach for investigation of the effect of dynamic evolution groundwater on stability of rock wedge slide is developed based on fundamental mechanism and experimental study. It can be adopted for stability assessment of similar rock wedge slides in other areas
