    “Belt and Road Initiative – Collaboration for Success” is part of the Textile Science and Clothing Technology book series (TSCT), which are a series of studies that analyze the critical factors that promote and impede textile & clothing (T&C) production and trade in the Belt & Road (B&R) countries, and the forces that drive the restructuring and transforming of global T&C supply chains and operations in the B&R context. The book also offers insights into the challenges and opportunities for T&C manufacturing in the B&R countries through interviews with T&C experts, and examines how Hong Kong can strengthen its “super-connector” role by facilitating sustainable trade and development in the T&C industries, as well as discusses the impact of global trade wars on T&C trade. Existing studies emphasizing the magnitude of green-wall thermal benefits paid little attention to temporal microclimatic behavior. To bridge the knowledge gap, we employed high-precision sensors to monitor the microclimate of two wirerope-type climber green walls and adjacent control bare walls in humid-subtropical Hong Kong. Sample days were systematically selected to represent the results on sunny, cloudy and rainy weather in summer. This study aimed at: (1) evaluating the magnitude and daily temporal occurrence of maximum temperature, cooling and insolation at different positions of the layered green walls, and (2) analyzing temporal occurrence patterns of maximum values of microclimatic variables. The results demonstrated the paramount importance of insolation on green-wall microclimate. Varied solar inputs under different weather brought a sequence in maximum insolation, temperature and cooling: sunny \u3e cloudy \u3e rainy. Achieving an average cooling of 8.5 °C against bare wall surface exterior on sunny days, climber foliage acted as a heat sink for the street canyon and the building shell. The posterior air gap (PAG) generated an effective insulation layer with average cooling of 2.5 °C against ambient air in sunny conditions. However, ambient air anterior to the green wall experienced minor warming up to 0.05 °C. Cooling was stronger on more solar-exposed aspect and under stronger insolation. Green walls steered humidification effect by 0.17 kPa on average on sunny days. Daily temperature oscillation was moderated most obviously at the building exterior with average 4.3 °C reduction in sunny conditions. Implications were drawn on climber-species selection and PAG provision to enhance the multi-dimensional thermal benefits of climber green wall

    The contradictory politics of the right to travel:mobilities, borders & tourism

    The freedom of movement and right to travel are intrinsic to the growth of international tourism. Notwithstanding the inchoate nature of the right to tourism, the entitlement to travel and to pursue tourism without hindrance is firmly established in advanced capitalist societies. Moreover, the right to tourism has been recently enshrined in the 2017 United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Framework Convention on Tourism Ethics. Tourists’ ease of mobility contrasts starkly with the movements of less privileged forms of mobility that may be variously constrained by racism, xenophobia and restrictive border controls. This paper contends that rather than a mere reflection of accumulated political rights (citizenship), such unequal and differentiated mobilities are conditioned by a complex assemblage of discursive frameworks and structural forces that are played out in specific historical-geographic contexts. Accordingly, we argue that the rights associated with global tourism must be analysed in the context of the contradictory politics of global mobility, or indeed in terms of the ‘mobility crisis’. This ‘crisis’ is one that is rooted in and shaped by the cumulative legacy of past colonial orders, global capitalism and geopolitical realignments, in addition to multi-scalar systems of governance through which borders are constituted, managed and policed

    Enhancing protection of vehicle drivers and road safety by deploying ADAS and Facial Features Pattern Analysis (FFPA) technologies

    The latest technology associated with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have been designed with the aim to minimize the numbers of person injury in road accidents and improve the overall road safety. The driver behavior is one major concern in many accidents in HK urban road links. In particular, the driver\u27s attitudes, such as fatigue, drowsiness and concentration are the major causes to road accidents. It will affect the driver\u27s ability and decisions in properly controlling their vehicles. Very often, this kind of driver distraction is particularly obvious when driving after 2 to 3 hours from most research sources. In the traffic data sourced from Transport Department of HKSAR, around 82% of the personal injury in road accidents belongs to the driver\u27s fault. This paper used the latest technology and applied it to a group of transport vehicles, i.e. taxi. The objective is set up to monitor, record and analyze the fatigue and drowsiness situation of drivers by means of advanced AI system, facial recognition detection system (the sensors) and early warning devices (LDWS) via ADAS technology. The result will be used to give real time early warning and subsequent analysis for the transport operators or researchers for better and safer management of their transport fleets. The system aimed to have a good precaution and protection on all road users, including drivers, passengers and pedestrians. In turn, it largely saves our community resources, such as the medical and social services consumed on treating the injured persons

    © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020. In 2017, global population aged 60 years or over reached nearly 963 million, becoming twice the figure recorded in 1980. Not surprisingly ageing population will continue to accelerate due to continuing decline in fertility and improvement in survival in major diseases. When people who are suffered from cognitive or physical impairment, they often feel alone and experience different degrees of social loneliness. This paper discusses co-design experiences with various stakeholders to explore latent needs of older persons in their daily living using a universal design approach. Through iterative use of creative methods, freehand sketching and physical models, older adults can express their needs in a more accurate, tactile format. Findings reveal that commonality of interest among older persons are important in building rapport among other participants. It also helps designers develop assistive design related to health care, mobility, dining and leisure activities involving older persons, benefiting society as a whole

    Manufacturing small-to-medium enterprises (SME’s) in Hong Kong utilise the Hong Kong industrial design profession as a source of competitiveness. However, the contribution of industrial design to these objectives falls short due to mis-aligned priorities and unmet manufacturer needs. This paper and associated literature review discusses the background and context for the creation of a Balanced Scorecard for industrial design management framework. The framework’s intention is to provide a robust solution to Hong Kong manufacturing SME’s to deal with business volatility and increased competition globally. The context of Hong Kong manufacturing is explored while the foundations and potential benefits of this new and novel framework are discussed

    Solvothermal synthesis of copper-doped BiOBr microflowers with enhanced adsorption and visible-light driven photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin

    Photocatalysts based on copper-doped bismuth oxybromide (Cu-doped BiOBr) were synthesised using a solvothermal method and assessed for their ability to degrade norfloxacin under visible light. The Cu atoms were successfully doped into the crystal lattice of BiOBr, yielding Cu-doped BiOBr microflowers with a morphology and crystal structure identical to that of pristine BiOBr. The as-prepared Cu-doped BiOBr showed activity superior to BiOBr in the photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin under visible-light irradiation, which was attributed to its improved light-harvesting properties, enhanced charge separation and interfacial charge transfer. Furthermore, we found for the first time that the introduction of Cu into BiOBr enhanced the adsorption capacity between the photocatalyst and norfloxacin, which we considered to be the main contribution to its improved performance. Cu-doped BiOBr containing the optimal proportion of Cu and Bi (Cu:Bi = 0.03) had a photocatalytic degradation constant of 0.64 ×10−2 min−1, which is 2.28 times higher than that of undoped BiOBr. The primary oxidation pathway was determined to involve the transfer of photogenerated holes to norfloxacin. Finally, we demonstrated that the Cu-doped BiOBr photocatalyst retained 95% of its initial activity even after five successive catalytic cycles, confirming its recyclability
