    A Sensor-Based Robotic Line Scan System With Adaptive ROI for Inspection of Defects Over Convex Free-Form Specular Surfaces

    In this paper, we present a novel sensor-based system to perform defect inspection tasks automatically over free-form specular surfaces. The inspection procedure is performed by a robotic manipulator equipped with a line scanner system. Taking the geometric and optical parameters into consideration, our algorithm computes a flexible scanning path. Based on a mesh model, the system segments the convex surface into areas with similar curvatures, then adaptively adjusts the line sensor’s scanning range to ensure the complete coverage of the surface. We consider the scanning efficiency through constrained optimization. To align the computed scanning path with the specular object, a real-time workpiece localization algorithm in a coarse-to-fine manner is developed. Our control framework synchronizes the motion of the manipulator and the acquisition of the line scanner for robotic inspection. We also provide an image processing pipeline for automatic defect detection. To validate the proposed formal methodology, we report a detailed experimental study with the developed robotic inspection prototype

    Seasonal Variation of Physical Performance and Inter-limb Asymmetry in Professional Cricket Athletes

J Strength Cond Res 35(4): 941–948, 2021—The aims of this study were to: (a) determine the seasonal variation of physical performance in professional cricket players and (b) determine the seasonal variation of interlimb asymmetries in the same cohort of professional players. Fifteen male professional cricket players (age: 20.60 ± 1.59 years; height: 1.82 ± 0.08 m; and body mass: 78.70 ± 11.23 kg) performed unilateral countermovement jumps (CMJs), unilateral drop jumps, 10 m sprints and 505 change of direction (COD) speed tests at pre (March), mid (June), and end (September) of the 2018 season. Interlimb asymmetry was quantified in the unilateral CMJ (jump height and concentric impulse), unilateral drop jump (jump height and reactive strength index [RSI]), and 505 (total time and COD deficit). Significant changes (p \u3c 0.05) were evident for the following tests: unilateral CMJ (effect size [ES] range = 0.67–1.00), 505 on the right leg (ES = 0.70), 10 m (ES range = −1.39 to 0.70), and COD deficit (ES range = 0.70–0.80), with the largest changes evident for 10-m sprint. No significant differences were evident in drop jump performance throughout the season. For the magnitude of asymmetry, significant changes in jump height asymmetry from the unilateral CMJ were evident from mid to end of season (ES = 0.72). For the direction of asymmetry, levels of agreement ranged from poor to substantial in the unilateral CMJ (kappa = −0.21 to 0.72), fair to substantial in the unilateral drop jump (kappa range = 0.33 to 0.74), and slight to moderate during the 505 test (kappa range = 0.06 to 0.44), with RSI showing noticeably better results than other tests or metrics. These data show that the largest changes in performance scores throughout the season came from the 10-m test, which practitioners may wish to consider implementing if not doing so already. Furthermore, both unilateral jump tests showed their use for asymmetry interpretation, which practitioners may wish to consider implementing in to their test batteries. Specifically, jump height asymmetry during the unilateral CMJ was the only metric to exhibit meaningful changes between time points, whereas RSI was the metric that exhibited more consistent limb dominance characteristics for the direction of asymmetry

    Asian convention venue engaging in sustainable practice: The driving and hindering factors

    This study aims to identify the factors that drive or hinder convention venue to implement sustainable practices. The response from 136 Asian convention venue senior managers shows that improving the corporation image of the venue is the primary driving factor for management team to engage in sustainable practices, while lack of resources is the major hindering factor. The significant differences in the driving and hindering factors were identified among management teams from different-sized convention venues in Asia. The importance and suitability of sustainable practices were revealed from the perspective of different-sized convention venues. The insights from this study deepen the understanding of sustainability in convention management and provide valuable implications for industry practitioners

    Key performance indicators for holistic evaluation of building retrofits: Systematic literature review and focus group study

    Buildings are increasingly designed and constructed with state-of-the-art facilities. But without proper upkeep including timely implementation of appropriate retrofits throughout the operational stage, the facilities will not be able to perform to meet their intended purposes and the ever-rising user demands. Research on building retrofits has been widely pursued, but studies focusing on the identification of appropriate key performance indicators (KPIs) for holistic evaluation of building retrofits remain limited. To address this research gap, a mixed methods approach combining positivism and interpretivism was taken for a study. First, a four-stage literature review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method was conducted, which resulted in identification of 62 performance indicators that are applicable to evaluating building retrofits. Second, after consolidation and refinement the indicators underwent a focus group study. Grounded upon deliberation and shortlisting by the focus group experts, 19 KPIs were selected and the reasons for having those indicators excluded were revealed. The selected KPIs fall into four aspects: economic, environmental, users’ perspective, and health and safety, and their distributions by quantity are 37%, 26%, 26% and 11% respectively. Not only are these KPIs useful for evaluating the performance of building retrofits in practice for the betterment of a sustainable built environment, but the methodology of this study can also be taken in similar research to identify KPIs in other areas
