    The Correlation between Spiritual Well-Being and Burnout of Teachers

    This study examines the correlation between spiritual well-being and burnout symptoms, including emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalisation (DP), and personal accomplishment (PA), among Chinese secondary school teachers in Hong Kong. The data were collected from 427 Chinese secondary school teachers (189 males, 238 females) aged 25–37 from different schools with one to eight years of teaching experience. The participants completed the Spiritual Health and Life-orientation Measure (SHALOM) to evaluate the status of their spiritual well-being in the personal and communal, environmental, and transcendental domains. The Maslach Burnout Inventory—Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) was also used to measure the extent of burnout in the workplace. All domains of spiritual well-being were negatively associated with EE and DP, while the personal and communal domain and the transcendental domain of spiritual well-being were positively associated with PA. Multiple regression analysis revealed that all the specific domains of spiritual well-being explained 68.6% and 54.0% of the variance in teachers’ EE and DP, respectively. Meanwhile, the same analysis found that the personal–communal and transcendental domains explained 74.9% of the variance in teachers’ PA. The personal–communal domain of spiritual well-being was the strongest predictor of burnout

    Contributions of service learning to the development of university students’ spiritual well-being and psychological health: a quasi-experimental study

    In this study, the impacts of service learning (SL) on the spiritual wellbeing and psychological health of Chinese university students in Hong Kong are determined. The SL programme is a six-month, creditbearing programme (not less than 80 working hours). The study adopted a pre-test–post-test quasi-experimental design, wherein students enrolled in SL comprised the experimental group (n = 132; 59 male, 73 female), and those who were not enrolled in SL comprised the control group (n = 128; 55 male, 73 female). The students completed the spiritual well-being questionnaire (SWBQ) to evaluate the status of their spiritual well-being (including the personal and communal, environmental, and transcendental domains), and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) was used to assess their emotional states of depression, anxiety and stress before and after the SL programme. At pre-test, no significant differences were observed between the two groups in SWBQ and DASS-21 scores. Findings indicated that students in the experimental group had greater increases in spiritual well-being in personal and communal, environmental and transcendental domains and decreases in stress, anxiety and depression than those in the control group at the end of the SL programme

    Study of Potential Synergistic Effect of Probiotic Formulas in Food Toxin Reduction

    Short Description of what will be discussed during the presentation (about 250 - 500 words) In this study, the potential synergistic effects of probiotic formulas to reduce ethyl carbamate (EC), a common process-induced toxicant, was investigated. Five selected Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Streptococcus strains were incubated with EC chemical solution and those with higher efficacy to reduce EC were selected for probiotic formulation. The probiotic formulas were incubated with (i) standard chemical solutions, (ii) wine samples including yellow wine, sake and plum wine as well as (iii) in-vitro digestion model to evaluate the reduction of of EC. LC-MS was used to analyse levels of EC of samples. Synergistic effect of the probiotic formula was only observed in some selected wine samples and the reduction percentage of EC by a combination of Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Lactobacillus plantarum is significantly higher (p\u3c0.05) than that by single strain of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus paracasei. Overall, the synergistic effect of probiotics formulas to reduce EC and its reduction mechanism required further studies in the future

    The affect-proactive performance link and its reciprocal process: a hedonic contingency theory perspective

    Employees’ proactive performance is future-oriented and contributes to organizational effectiveness and sustainability. The proactivity literature shows that positive affect and negative affect may have differential effects to motivate various proactive behaviors at work. However, direct empirical evidence of the impact of affect on proactive performance is limited. It is also important to investigate whether the motivational effect of positive and negative affect on proactive performance can be sustained over time. Responding to these knowledge gaps, we apply the Hedonic Contingency Theory (HCT), and hypothesize a positive reciprocal relationship between positive affect and proactive performance over time, while such effect does not exist for negative affect. Results from two independent studies – a cross-sectional and a longitudinal one – provide support for hypotheses drawn from HCT. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed

    Investigation of the electrocatalytic mechanisms of urea oxidation reaction on the surface of transition metal oxides

    Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) has been widely considered as an alternative anodic reaction to water oxidation for the green production of hydrogen fuel. Due to the high catalytic activity of transition metal oxides towards UOR, various strategies have been developed to improve their syntheses and catalytic properties. However, little is known about the underlying mechanisms of UOR on catalyst surface. In this work, three transition metal oxides, including NiO, Co3O4, and Fe2O3 are investigated as model catalysts. Through analyzing the electrochemical properties by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and operando Raman spectroscopy, it is revealed that NiO has a unique high catalytic activity towards UOR due to simultaneous formation of a thin layer of oxyhydroxide species above 1.40 V vs. RHE in alkaline media. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations further suggest that the adsorption of urea molecules is largely affected by surface interactions resulting in different space configurations, which impose large influences on the consecutive deprotonation and NN formation processes. Overall, results of this work point to the subtle adsorption − kinetics relationship in UOR and highlight the importance of the interfacial electronic interactions on catalyst surface
