Theme Story - Rethinking the Relationship Between Design and Self / An Exploration of Object-Oriented Ontology

The influence of design extends far beyond mere form and function; it subtly shapes the way we exist. Ontology, the philosophical study of being , examines the nature, categories, and interrelations of various entities in the world. Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) further subverts traditional subject-object perspectives by asserting that objects are not merely passive accessories to human actions but possess their own meanings and agency. This philosophical approach has not only inspired artistic creation but has also profoundly impacted contemporary design

Wearable Solutions: Addressing Dressing Challenges Among Hong Kong’s Elderly Through Adaptive Clothing Design

Background/Objectives: This research enhances the wear comfort and functionality of adaptive clothing for elderly individuals (65 years old and older) in Hong Kong. There are three study objectives: (1) to identify the specific dressing challenges and difficulties of the elderly and their caregivers, (2) to explore the needs and preferences of the aged towards adaptive clothing, taking into account factors such as wear comfort, ease of use, style, and culture, and (3) to propose a design solution that addresses the identified challenges and meets the needs of elderly people, with a focus on wear comfort and functionality. Methods: The general methodology comprises a questionnaire and selfreported data. A total of 80 questionnaires are distributed to the aged with 54 completed and acceptable ones. SPSS Statistics is used to determine the meaningful patterns, trends, and linkages that are associated with the difficulties of the elderly in dressing. The quantitative data obtained are analyzed for a tailor-made adaptive garment. The proposed design addresses the identified issues of the elderly participants and contributes to garment designs with a better texture and cut. Results: The survey results show that the participants prioritize adaptive features such as elasticized waistbands, adaptive fasteners, open-back designs, and wide openings. The greatest challenges that they face in particular are difficulties with lack of fine motor skills, arm mobility and hand dexterity. These elderly individuals could enjoy a more independent lifestyle by overcoming these challenges if offered garments that have more efficient designs, given more alternatives, and access to clothing with safety elements. Regarding style preference and cultural factors, the majority of the survey respondents favor textiles that are easy to care for and low in maintenance, and require less laundering and upkeep work. Conclusions: The study identifies the unique dressing needs and preferences of the elderly in Hong Kong. Wear comfort and functionality are their prime concerns. The study also offers a wider range of adaptive clothing options, which take into consideration the cultural factors of Hong Kong. The potential benefits of adaptive clothing for caregivers, nurses, and hospital staff are highlighted which enhance the quality of life and encourage the independence of the aging population. Several specialized adaptive clothing options to accommodate different body sizes and shapes are also proposed

Enhancing Electric Wheelchair Safety via Battery State of Charge EstimationWith PCC–NSSR–LSTM Method

This study explores a novel algorithm created to predict the state of charge (SOC) of batteries in electric wheelchairs (EWs) to improve EW safety by adjusting SOC thresholds and reducing consumer range anxiety. It involves collecting experimental data from lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells over 1500 cycles at 25◦C, encompassing various parameters. With the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC), a select set of key parameters including voltage, temperature, dQ/dV (capacity increase to voltage increase ratio) are chosen as inputs for non-linear state space reconstruction long short-term memory (NSSR-LSTM) neural networks, facilitating precise SOC predictions. The study showcases the precision of SOC predictions by revealing outcomes for different cycles, such as 900, 1000 and 1100. In addition toEWs, the proposed PCC–NSSR–LSTMmethod is also applicable to other mobility devices, including electric bicycles, golf carts and similar vehicles

Synergistic Integration of ESG Across Life Essentials: A Comparative Study of Clothing, Energy, and Transportation Industries Using CEPAR® Methodology

This study conducts a comparative assessment of the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) integration strategies of three leading companies in Hong Kong—H&M Group, China Gas Company Limited (Towngas), and MTR Corporation Limited (MTR)—each operating in distinct sectors with unique sustainability challenges and opportunities. The analysis adopts the Challenge–Evaluation–Planning–Action–Review (CEPAR®) framework developed by the International Chamber of Sustainable Development to examine how these companies identify and evaluate ESG-related risks, formulate action plans, implement sustainability initiatives, and refine their strategies. The findings reveal H&M’s strong emphasis on sustainable fashion, with a target of using 100% sustainable materials by 2030 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 56%. Towngas faces the complex challenge of transitioning from fossil fuels to cleaner energy and is investing in zero-carbon technologies to meet regulatory standards and stakeholder expectations. MTR focuses on sustainable urban development and efficient mass transit, prioritizing community engagement and reducing environmental impact. This study underscores the importance of sector-specific ESG approaches tailored to a company’s operational context. It also demonstrates how ESG integration is enhanced by proactive planning, transparent reporting, and alignment with long-term corporate values. By showcasing both successful practices and areas requiring further attention, this research contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable business practices in Hong Kong. Moreover, it provides actionable policy implications for government agencies and regulatory bodies. The insights gained can inform strategic decision-making across sectors and support the development of a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive economy aligned with Hong Kong’s long-term climate and governance goals
