Theme - Revives Chinoiserie with Guangcai
Traditional Chinese culture is profoundly influential. As the society attaches more and more importance to cultural identity, projects themed with cultural revival are emerging. Yet, people have almost always only focused on formal art categories. Traditional craftsmanship that does not belong to the mainstream rarely receives much attention. Things have changed because of the increasing prominence of the creative economy in recent years, the renewal of the market and population structure, and the rise of social consciousness. Traditional folk crafts are now hot items in the cultural and creative industry, thanks to their unique cultural character, the distinguished technical skills applied and their relevance to everyday life. Chinese is Cool is a new theme advocated by cultural entrepreneur Adrian Cheng – the founder of K11 Craft & Guild Foundation (KCG). Under this theme, KCG has redefined its work to conserve and rejuvenate traditional Chinese craftsmanship with a more relevant zeitgeist. Guangcai is a project sponsored by KCG. Through various novel creative, operation and promotion channels, a strong case for bringing traditional Chinese crafts to the world and into the future is established

Study of the Efficacy of Probiotic Bacteria to Reduce Acrylamide in Food and In Vitro Digestion
In this study, probiotic bacteria as a new post-processing approach to reduce acrylamide (AA) was investigated. The AA reduction ability of selected Lactobacillus strains and Bifidobacterium strains was demonstrated in (a) AA chemical solutions; (b) food matrices (biscuits and chips) and (c) in vitro digestion. The findings showed tested bacteria exhibited AA reduction ability which was probiotic strain-, AA concentration-, probiotic concentration-, incubation time- and pH-dependent. L. acidophilus LA 45 and B. longum ATCC 15707 (109 CFU/mL) showed the highest AA reduction (86.85 and 88.85%, respectively) when exposed to 350 ng/mL AA solution for 8 h. The findings also demonstrated that AA reduction ability of selected probiotic strains was pH- and food matrixdependent in both food matrices (9.45–22.15%) and in vitro digestion model (10.91–21.29%). This study showed probiotic bacteria can lower AA bioaccessibility under simulated digestion
Retro-commissioning for buildings: problems and the way forward for a policy research study
Buildings represent a major source of energy use and significantly contribute to carbon emissions and hence, the global warming problem. Towards the goal of sustainable and smart buildings, worldwide a variety of voluntary and mandatory tools have been introduced to enhance buildings’ operational performance. Among these tools is retro-commissioning (RCx) - a knowledge-based systematic process to periodically check and improve existing buildings’ performance. However, the uptake of RCx in the building sector remains limited. Grounded on a literature review, this paper reports on the emergence and development of RCx, a comparison between RCx programmes in cities that pioneered to impose regulations on RCx, the characteristics of RCx, and the concerns over the implementation of RCx in existing buildings. In addition, barriers and policy measures revealed from the building energy literature, which are potentially applicable to RCx, were identified. The way forward for a proposed study, by which appropriate policies can be identified to enable RCx implementation, is described. Findings from this study would serve as reference that imposes implications to future RCx research
Efficient recovery of lithium and cobalt from spent lithium-ion batteries by p-toluene sulfonic acid
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used in consumer electronics and electric vehicles. In terms of environmental restrictions and circular economy, proper treatment of spent LIBs is of great significance for achieving sustainable development. In this study, organic p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) was employed to recycle valuable Li and Co elements from the spent LIBs for production of battery raw materials. Operation parameters such as PTSA concentration, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, leaching temperature and time, were systematically investigated. Under the optimal conditions (0.9 vol% H2O2, 1.5 mol L-1 PTSA, 30 g L- 1 solid-to-liquid ratio, 80 °C, and 60 min), while the leaching efficiencies of spent LiCoO2 for Li and Co was 95 and 93% respectively, the leaching efficiencies of commercial LiCoO2 was nearly quantitative. In addition, the selective precipitation of Co-rich compounds in cooled leachate allowed an effective separation of Co from the mixture. The high recovery yield of Co3O4 and Li2CO3 demonstrated the great potential of the PTSA-assisted leaching method in metal recovery of the spent LIBs for practical applications. Overall, this proposed recovery process is simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly and is of vital importance for rational treatment of spent LIBs
