Assessing the disability inclusiveness of university buildings

    No full text
With rights to access becoming basic human rights, a tool for building disability inclusiveness assessment is necessary to tell how far we have gone to include people with disabilities in buildings. This article proposes a Building Inclusiveness Assessment Score (BIAS) framework which is made up of two hierarchies of inclusion attributes, namely the Physical Disability Inclusion Sub-score (PDIS) and the Visual Impairment Inclusion Sub-score (VIIS). The tool allows simple, quantitative and more objective assessments of buildings. Using the tool, forty-eight university buildings from four universities in Hong Kong were assessed for illustrating its real-life application

A case series of acupuncture treatment for female infertility with some cases supplemented with Chinese medicines

    No full text
Introduction: Delayed marriage is a prominent trend among Chinese citizens in Hong Kong. Such substantial delays expectedly postpone the age of pregnancy, to the extent that aging has become a risk factor for female infertility. There are many underlying reasons for female infertility. Acupuncture has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is suggested to be effective for treating infertility. The objective of this study was to observe the outcome of acupuncture treatment on infertile females with some cases supplemented with CM. Materials and Methods: In this case series, female patients who sought medical consultations for infertility were clinically observed. They were treated either with acupuncture alone or with prescriptions of Chinese medicines (CM), based on individual\u27s condition and/or pathogenesis of the disease. There was no obvious major cause of infertility in terms of Western medical diagnosis, yet 15 patients were classified as having “Stagnation of Liver qi” according to Chinese medicine diagnosis theory. Twenty-one patients who completed the course of treatment were studied. Eight patients were treated with acupuncture only, while the remaining 13 patients received acupuncture treatment supplemented with CM. Results: Over a period of two years there were 14 women who were successful in becoming pregnant (66.7%) and 7 patients were not yet pregnant upon termination of treatment. None of the 21 cases exhibited any adverse effects. Conclusion: These observations suggest that acupuncture, either with or without CM supplementation, could be an effective option for treating infertility

The effect of sodium bicarbonate ingestion on back squat and bench press exercise to failure

This study examined the acute effects of NaHCO3 ingestion on repetitions to failure and rating of perceived exertion in the back squat and bench press in trained men. Eight resistance-trained men took part in this double-blind, randomized crossover experimental study whereby they ingested NaHCO3 (0.3 g[middle dot]kg-1 body mass) or placebo (sodium chloride NaCl: 0.045 g[middle dot]kg-1 body mass) solution 60 minutes before completing a bout of resistance exercise (3 sets of bench press and back squat exercise to failure at an intensity of 80% 1 repetition maximum). Experimental conditions were separated by at least 48 hours. Participants completed more repetitions to failure in the back squat after NaHCO3 ingestion (p = 0.04) but not for bench press (p = 0.679). Mean +/- SD of total repetitions was 31.3 +/- 15.3 and 24.6 +/- 16.2 for back squat and 28.7 +/- 12.2 and 26.7 +/- 10.2 for bench press in NaHCO3 and placebo conditions, respectively. Repetitions to failure decreased as set increased for the back squat and bench press (p = 0.001, both). Rating of perceived exertion significantly increased with set for the back squat and bench press (p = 0.002, both). There was no significant change in blood lactate across time or between conditions. There were however treatment x time interactions for blood pH (p = 0.014) and blood HCO3 concentration (p = 0.001). After ingestion, blood pH and HCO3 (p = 0.008) concentrations were greater for the NaHCO3 condition compared with the placebo condition (p \u3c 0.001). The results of this study suggest that sodium bicarbonate ingestion can enhance resistance exercise performance using a repetition to failure protocol in the first exercise in a resistance exercise session

Influence of exercise intensity and duration on perceived exertion in adolescent Taekwondo athletes

    No full text
The aim of this study was to examine the influence of exercise intensity and session duration on rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in adolescent Taekwondo (TKD) athletes. Twelve male youth competitive TKD athletes, aged between 13 and 18 years took part in this study. Training data (368 individual sessions) were collected during the 12 weeks of the pre-competitive TKD season. Daily training load was calculated using the heart rate and the session-RPE. Exercise intensity was also classified in five zones [i.e. 50–60%, 61–70%, 71–80%, 81–90% and 91–100% of maximal heart rate (HRmax)] and the time spent in each zone was expressed as percentage of total session time. The analysis of variance showed a significant main effect for zone (p\u3c0.001) with most of the time (69%) spent at intensities between 61 and 90% of HRmax, and only 10% spent above 91% (mean differences compared to the other zones ranging from –6.6% versus zone 1 to –14.8% versus zone 3; p\u3c0.0001). The individual correlation between session-RPE and HR-based methods were moderate to large. The stepwise multiple regression showed that RPE was influenced mainly by the time spent in the high intensity zone that explained 22.1% of the variance in RPE. Session duration accounted for only an additional 3.2%. The results suggest the time spent at high-intensity (i.e. between 91 and 100% HRmax) and only marginally the session duration influences the RPE referred to the whole training session. This seems to confirm that the determination of the TL multiplying the RPE and session duration is acceptable

Frameworks for nurturing and assessing students\u27 statistical thinking in regression modelling

    No full text
One educational objective in any statistics curriculum is to teach students how to think statistically. However, the definition of statistical thinking can be as broad as the thought processes involved in statistical activities or work or as narrow as focusing on the study of variation. To achieve this objective, it is necessary to know what statistical thinking means and how statistical thinking should be taught. In addition, it would be better to assess how well the students’ statistical thinking is developed. The aim of the assessment was to provide information to teachers about how to improve pedagogy to support learning..
