Challenges to team ethnography and PAR: a reflection of the journey of fashionthothgraphy
No full textCommunity-based experiential learning and academic-practitioner collaboration have become important components of post-secondary education (Amabile et al., 2001; Ozanne and Anderson, 2010; Ozanne and Saatcioglu, 2008). Many institutions are exploring innovative ways to enhance student learning experience and re-defining the concept of research in the academia. For instance, experiential learning could include a variety of learning activities, ranging from co-op to exchange program, to community-based research to co-innovation programs. Institutions are seeking ways to identify best approaches to maximize student learning experience. At the same time, academic research is moving to a multi-disciplinary arena. Cross-disciplinary, mixed-method or multi-methods approaches are more welcomed and accepted by the academic communities since the new research model can provide a holistic understanding and solutions for the challenges and problems. In this paper, we focus on presenting the challenges of implementing an “innovative pedagogy” that involve multiple disciplines, multiple researcher approaches (e.g., participatory action research, academic-practitioner collaboration) and stakeholders (researchers, educators, students, and research participants)
Analysis of environmental performance of indoor living walls using embodied energy and carbon
No full textIndoor living walls are becoming increasingly popular as they can provide good aesthetic effects and other environmental benefits. This research aims to analyse the environmental performance of indoor living walls by developing analytical models using embodied energy (EE) and carbon (EC). To assess the environmental impacts, a system of accounts is constructed based on an input–output model, and the total direct and indirect energy and carbon requirements for each output made by the system are estimated. It is found that indoor living walls could be more environmentally sound if recycled materials, renewable energy and sustainable design and maintenance practices are applied. For example, by adopting recycled materials (such as HDPE), the EE can be reduced by 4–49%; the EC can be reduced by 6–19%
The value of fashion photography: a new genre on social media
No full textFashion, being part of the creative industry, is one of the most highly visual oriented sectors. With the advancement of web technology providing the convenience of image creation and sharing online, a popular trend has emerged in today’s fashion world as the fashion blogging in Hong Kong and elsewhere. The booming fashion contents on social media have challenged the traditional hierarchy of fashion leadership, trend diffusion, and media communication model. This research draws on fashion and culture theories to explore the influence of this visual sharing culture on social media in fashion. The objective is to interpret the creative values and the meanings of such phenomenon from the perspective of fashion media industry in Hong Kong. In-depth interviews, in the exploratory semi-structured format, were adopted in which 20 fashion image producers in Hong Kong were interviewed regarding their increasing involvement in professional fashion image making and blogging. Among the 20 respondents, 12 respondents were younger generation of image producers with experience around 3 years, while 8 respondents have been in the industry for 15 years in average. The findings of this research indicated that the nature of visual oriented social media platform supports a new communication model between the new generation of fashion image producers and fashion readers. It is evident that there is a new trend for young fashion lovers to become successfully engaged in the industry as career bloggers who can create their styles and express their ideas through fashion imaging and sharing. On the other side, the professionalism and authenticity of the young generation of fashion bloggers are sometimes in questions. The finding is significant to further academic studies on the value of fashion visual communication on social media, and to business sectors, in which this study provides insight for young fashion lovers for career development
