At present, there are two main mobile platforms in the world, iOS and Android. These platforms have multitudinous resistances, so that no code can compile data from the two platforms simultaneously. Therefore, to satisfy their various clients, programmers have to set codes twice for the two distinct platforms... A case study of the potentials of SGC-based curricula

    Get PDF
This paper examines, through a case study, how the Specification of Generic (Foundation) Competencies – English (SGC-Eng) provides clear and objective standards for developing language curricula. A suite of 30 in-service English certificate programmes using 18 Units of Competency (UoCs) were launched for various industry sectors in the Vocational English Enhancement Programme1 (VEEP) from 2012 to 2015. It offers a unique experience and the best opportunity to study the value of the SGC-Eng in organizing and delivering vocational English modules. Descriptive accounts and documentation on the VEEP were analysed to shed light on the potentials and inadequacies of the SGC-Eng. They revealed very significant strengths in customizing programmes to suit different target learners; allowing multiple articulation pathways to higher levels or across different skills and UoCs; compartmentalizing learning to bite sizes; and offering a model of common currency for language learning courses across the territory. They also pointed out certain inadequacies of the programme which could be attributed to some inherent characteristics of the SGC-Eng

Perception of career development of hotel managers in Hong Kong: a qualitative approach

    No full text
The hotel industry of Hong Kong has been prosperous since the last decade, which is attributed to the increasing number of high spending travellers and new emerging markets. Despite the business opportunity, it has been revealed by senior managers and executives from hotels that they are striving to tackle the shortage of labour at every level, in particular the elementary level. The potential workforce is less inclined towards working in the hotel industry because of its characteristics such as shift duties, long working hours and unattractive salary package. To maintain the successful business of hotels and to give insights in the career development of hotel workers, this paper aims to explore hotel managers’ perceptions towards career development, and their suggestions for new recruits to the hotel industry in Hong Kong. Qualitative research in the form of in-depth interviews with 12 hotel managers in different departments was carried out, and the data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Six major themes were discovered that could assist in developing a person’s career in the hospitality industry. These are positive working attitudes, relevant overseas exposure, proficiency in hospitality languages, diversified job hunting approaches, tailored staff training programmes, and work experience in larger group/chained hotels. The new joiners to hotel industry as well as existing employees in different levels can make use of the suggestions to attain career advancement. In addition, this research is targeted at the decision makers and senior management to review their policies and directions to acquire, develop, and retain talented employees of hotel industry

Making marble powder waste profitable by using Nano-TiO2 surface modification for air quality improvement applications

    No full text
We report a brand new recycling route of waste marble powder, by means of surface modification with homemade nano-TiO2 particles to produce low cost coating materials for the application in air quality improvement. The as-prepared nano-TiO2 in anatase phase exhibits excellent photocatalytic characteristic, reflected by the high degradation rate of over 95% of methylene blue within 6 hours of UV irradiation. The prepared coating consisting of nano-TiO2 clad marble powder was tested by monitoring the decomposition rate of formaldehyde gas. A high degradation efficiency of about 95% within 9 hours of illumination is achieved, demonstrating a promising potential for removing the harmful and toxic organic pollutants in air while applying this coating in buildings both interiorly and exteriorly
