    Assessment of environmental performance of vertical greening systems

    Vertical greening systems are also known as green walls, living walls, or green facades. They are considered a sustainable/green building design approach and are becoming increasingly popular in the world. By using the natural processes of the vegetation, they can contribute to mitigating urban heat island, enhancing building’s thermal performance, saving cooling energy and improving air quality. As the space available for greening is often very limited in urban cities, vertical greening can be an effective method to improve the city environment. However, as vertical greening systems require materials to build and resources to maintain, there are queries about whether they are really worthy for adoption and how to enhance their environmental performance. This research aims to assess the environmental performance of vertical greening systems and investigate the important considerations for effective and sustainable building design. The common types of vertical greening systems are evaluated and the key factors of environmental performance are examined. To enhance the environmental performance and potential benefits of the vertical greening, the life cycle environmental impacts, integrated sustainable technologies and holistic ecological and social factors should be considered carefully in the planning, design and maintenance of the systems

    Focus Highlight in VPET: Skill development and economic growth

    There is good evidence of a strong positive relationship between skills and economic growth. It is a stronger relationship than that between educational qualifications and growth. Furthermore, skills shortages persist in countries such as the UK, even though there has been a large increase in the number of people with tertiary-level qualifications. This must be addressed at all levels of education policy. It is also important to consider economic changes, such as technological developments, when considering what skills are needed for economic growth. For example, much of the economic literature shows the importance of skill-biased technological change and its consequences for jobs required in the economy and how they are rewarded. An important question for vocational education and training (VET) policy is how to ensure people are equipped for the current needs of the labour market while also being versatile enough to find another job or re-train when the economy changes. This is a difficult issue in the face of much uncertainty about how economies may change and what jobs will be created as well as what jobs will no longer be required. We consider the challenges this uncertainty poses for research and policy in education, VET and lifelong learning

    Healthcare analytics using network thinking

    Health data can be easily gathered via the Internet, and processed as well as managed efficiently by technology. The sheer volume and complexity of the data seem unconnected, meaningless or useless. But, in fact, the data are connected to a certain extent because it is believed that everything is connected under the philosophy of network thinking. The data will be valuable and meaningful if statistical thinking is applied to obtain insights from the data. Of course, the data would thus become useful for research, therapy, planning, policy-making, and so forth. Data visualization is a common tool to extract useful information from the data, but many novice data scientists have difficulty in gaining insights and seeing insidious relationships of data. This hinders their ability to derive intrinsic meanings of graphical data. In this Article, the author presents a critical review of current research in this area from three different perspectives: pedagogy, statistics and cognitive psychology. Arising from a synthesis of this research he proposes cognitive models of data visualization which helps to check whether data form patterns; search for data patterns; check whether data patterns have meaning; and interpret the meaning of data patterns within the context of healthcare analytics. Beyond the elementary analytics, it would better incorporate network thinking to build a healthcare surveillance system for smart living

    Flipped classroom to unleash the potential of Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET)

    With the popularization of internet development, the learning behavior of the new generation is changing dramatically. In fact, online teaching and learning with advanced multimedia technologies have already been successfully adopted in many countries around the world. The idea of “Flipped Classroom” can be traced back to early 2000’s when some researchers demonstrated how traditional classroom activities can be “flipped” outside a classroom. In 2015, Professor Rick, Glofcheski. performed a “flipped-classroom” learning experience in the University of Hong Kong and received positive feedbacks from students and tutors. Recently, Professor Ricky, Kwok. (2017) had shared how his 4Cs formula was helpful to motivate students’ attention. Likely, they spring up the popularity of flipped classroom. The Vocational Training Council (VTC) of Hong Kong would like to explore the feasibility in adopting these new pedagogical approaches in vocational and professional education and training (VPET) in Hong Kong. The Department of Construction at IVE(Morrison Hill) under VTC has launched a series of pilot studies on using flipped classroom and online teaching and learning since the academic year 2016/17. This paper presents the results of one of the pilot studies, which is designed to study the feasibility of the concept of flipped classroom in VPET with the objectives to gain some hands-on experience in conducting flipped classroom teaching, to collect feedbacks from students and teachers of the learning experience, to study the learning effectiveness and to identify the success factors in adoption of flipped classrooms in VPET. Two modules were chosen to perform flipped classroom teaching. After that, questionnaires were issued to collect students’ feedback. Assessments were carried out to compare the performance of the students with controlled groups. Through the pilot studies, we would assess the feasibility with suggestions to enhance the practicality of flipped classroom in VPET. In general, we evidenced that the application of flipped learning classroom did motivate students to learn outside the classroom and promote peer learning between among themselves
