Assessment of student learning achievement in regression tasks
Many students are under the illusion that the use of IT can accomplish statistical calculations without the need for statistical thinking but the regression models they built are infeasible for making prediction. It is therefore in the present study to assess the operational level of students’ statistical thinking in regression modelling. A sample of students was selected to attempt the seven questions on an individual basis. A qualitative analysis of students’ Responses to each of the questions was performed within the assessment framework of Putt et al. as checking which of the four levels of statistical thinking the students had: idiosyncratic thinking, transitional thinking, quantitative thinking and analytical thinking. The analysis results show that most students attained either quantitative thinking or analytical thinking when handling more technical tasks, but not the tasks of reasoning about data; reasoning about results; and reasoning about conclusions. These reasoning tasks demand statistical communication that should be emphasized and monitored throughout Statistics lessons and written works should be assigned to students so that teachers can provide feedback on their writings, as helping them conceptualize material, make links among concepts, and internalize thinking
Factors influencing social processes of statistics learning within an IT environment
Information Technology plays an educational role of organizing the learning environment to promote social interaction among students as well as between students and a teacher, but little is known about what underlying factors influence such social interaction within the context of statistics learning. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted to gather data relevant to this issue. The data were then summarized by using Factor Analysis that yielded the following factors: co-learning, teacher’s scaffolding assistance, the importance of learning partners, collaborative interaction, collaborative learning, and the significance of teacher’s intervention. Further interpretation of the analysis indicates that social interaction among students constitutes a crux of the matter regarding the social process of statistics learning, whereas students benefited from the teacher’s intervention during which the teacher played supportive roles
Perceptions regarding the implementation of e-portfolio for students in sport and recreation internship placements
This chapter aims to investigate perceptions regarding the implementation of Electronic Portfolio (e-portfolio) for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Sport and Recreation Leadership program. Sixty students (Males = 35, 58.3%, Females = 24, 40%) participated in a pilot study by electronically submitting their internship experience portfolio to the Mahara e-portfolio system. A compulsory training workshop was conducted in October 2013. Students submitted their CV, internship information, student reflections and artefacts to the Mahara e-portfolio system during and after the internship in 2014. Students’ perceptions and lecturers’ comments on e-portfolio implementation were collected and discussed in this chapter
The relationship between the spiritual well-being of university students in Hong Kong and their academic performance
The study aims to examine the relationship between the spiritual well-being of university students in Hong Kong and their academic performance measured by Cumulative Grade-Point Average, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative part of the study consists of 1130 Year 2 and Year 3 students from three universities in Hong Kong. The questionnaire is adapted from the Spiritual Health and Life-Orientation Measure developed by John Fisher. Results indicate a moderately positive relationship between the spiritual well-being of the respondents and their academic performance. The qualitative part of the study is comprised of 11 focus group discussions. The findings of this support the quantitative findings and contribute to the exploration of how students’ spiritual well-being and their pursuits of academic success are correlated. The several spiritual attributes, namely, concentration, persistence, self-confidence, self-discipline and interpersonal relationships are found in the resulting positive relationship through the qualitative findings
