The potential for synergy between wineries and restaurants seems obvious today, but the winery-restaurant phenomenon is relatively new. Recent years, however, have seen such ventures flourish, and Michelin stars and multiple awards suggest it’s a marriage built to last.

    Design Innovation and Sustainable Environment

    No full text
With an unprecedented increase in elderly population around the world, the severe lack of safe and healthy environmental provisions to serve this cohort cannot be ignored any longer. Many elderly citizens, especially singletons, live in unsafe housing conditions with poorly executed planning and design. Some suffer from deteriorating mobility, sight and general alertness and their sub-standard living conditions further hinder their daily existence. This research explains how concepts such as universal design and sustainable design operate in a high density city such as Hong Kong, China where innovative sustainable design can become an alternative solution to promote a sustainable urban development in areas where both government and private sector fail to provide quality elderly friendly environment Unlike other elderly research which focuses more on housing policies, nursing care and theories, this research takes a more progressive approach by providing an in-depth impact assessment on how innovative design can be practical solutions for creating a more sustainable built environment. The research objectives are to: 1) explain the relationship between innovative design for elderly and a healthier and sustainable environment; 2) evaluate the impact of human ergonomics with the use of universal design; and 3) explain how innovation can enhance the sustainability of a city in improving citizen’s sight, sound, walkability and safety within the ageing population

Study on the transient performance of a liquid desiccant dehumidifier under changing boundary conditions

    No full text
It was found that there were still very limited studies for the dynamic operation and transient performance of the dehumidifier. Besides, the coupling study of heat, mass and flow was not comprehensive and lots of assumption was made to start the simulation. Lack of accurate prediction, the guidelines of control system design and operation cannot be put forward appropriately. Therefore, the paper established a reliable dynamic model for the dehumidifier. With the model, it obtained the transient response performance of the dehumidifier under changing boundary conditions, such as response time and response curves of outlet parameters. The magnitudes of the influences of various inlet parameters was analyzed, providing reliable and effective predication of the transient response performance of the dehumidifier

Street-level multicul turalism: Cultural integration and identity politics of African migrants in Hong Kong

    No full text
Multiculturalism is about co-existence of diverse cultures. Current literature on multiculturalism mostly uses a top-down approach to examine how the governments adopt different policies to manage cultural diversity. However, how the migrants use their own culture including music to enhance integration is often neglected. This paper uses the experience of African migrants in Hong Kong to reveal an alternative account of multiculturalism. Based on in-depth interviews and participant observation with African drummers, this paper examines the role of African drum as a means of cultural integration. It raises the concept of “street-level multiculturalism” for analysing how African migrants experience and negotiate cultural difference on the ground. It argues that African drum music promotes intercultural contact by arousing curiosity and creating friendly atmosphere. Africans’ engagement in identity politics is based on their marginal status. Their ability to negotiate their African culture and their Hong Kong experience is a politically conscious process

A modified method of high molecular weight adsorbable organic chlorine measurement in saline water: dialysis pretreatment

    No full text
Adsorbable organic halogen is a mean to quantify total organic halogen, which is an important toxicity indicator in disinfection byproduct studies. However, quantification of low concentrations of adsorbable organic chlorine (AOCl) formation in seawater chlorination using the USEPAMethod 9020Bwas found inaccurate due to the presence of high concentrations of chloride. In this study, a dialysis-based pretreatment techniquewas proposed, optimized and adopted to eliminate the interference of chloride in quantifying low concentrations of AOCl inseawater. A volumetric ratio of dialysis samples to continuous-flow deionized water at 1:1200 was found sufficient to remove over 99% of chloride. As a result, chloride to AOCl ratios can be reduced to less than 20,000, and the interference from chloride can thus be eliminated. The detainment of AOCl by the dialysis pretreatment depends on the molecular weight cutoff of the cellulose seamless dialysis membrane currently used, which was determined to be around 320 to 500 Da. The dialysis pretreatment can be used tomeasure AOCl concentrations in chlorinated seawater samples at pH 6.5 to 10
