New Media, Profit Orientation, and Lifestyle among Indonesian Muslim Millennials: A Rational Choice Perspective on Capital Market Engagement
This article explores the interplay between new media, lifestyle aspirations, and financial behavior among Indonesian Muslim millennials in relation to capital market investments. Anchored in Rational Choice Theory (RCT), the study investigates how economic motivations, religious considerations, and social influences shape investment decisions. Drawing on qualitative data collected through in-depth interviews with more than 20 millennial Muslims from Yogyakarta and East Java, the study reveals a dynamic shift in perception—from viewing investment as a prestigious lifestyle marker to embracing it as a rational strategy for long-term financial security. Social media and smartphone technology emerge as key facilitators of financial literacy and access, enabling individuals to engage with the capital market despite limited formal financial education. Moreover, the research highlights how religious legitimation, particularly the fatwa from Indonesia’s National Sharia Council (DSN MUI), contributes to the perceived permissibility of stock market participation among observant Muslims. However, this perception is not universally acknowledged, indicating a nuanced negotiation between religious norms and market behavior. The findings suggest that capital market participation among Muslim millennials is not solely driven by profit-seeking behavior but also deeply influenced by peer dynamics, lifestyle aspirations, and broader socio-religious frameworks. This study contributes to a growing body of literature on Islamic financial practices, digital religiosity, and the socio-cultural dimensions of economic life in Muslim-majority societies

Synergy of Islamic Religious Education in Increasing Literacy and Access to Sharia Finance
The synergy between Islamic Religious Education (PAI) and Islamic finance is a strategic urgency in answering the challenges of financial literacy of Muslims in the modern era. Islamic Religious Education not only aims to form morals and religious understanding alone, but also has great potential in building economic awareness based on Islamic values. More than 50% of students do not understand the principles of Islamic economics, this picture is obtained from the results of the final semester exam, so a deep understanding synergy is needed in this regard. This study aims to examine the synergy between Islamic Religious Education (PAI) and increasing literacy and access to Islamic finance for students majoring in economics at STIE Kusuma Negara. The background of this study is the low understanding of students regarding the principles of Islamic finance, even though they come from economics study programs. Islamic Religious Education is considered to have a strategic role in forming religious awareness and sustainable Islamic economic attitudes. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and case study method, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the integration of Islamic finance material in the PAI curriculum and a contextual learning approach that emphasizes Islamic practices and values can increase student literacy towards the concept of Islamic finance. With a success rate of learning outcomes reaching 95%, this approach has proven effective while offering an educational model that is adaptive to the development of the times and the needs of contemporary Muslim societ
Exploring the Influence of Generative AI on Self-Regulated Learning: A Mixed-Methods Study in the EFL Context
Given the transformative impact of Generative AI (GenAI) on education, this study investigates its specific influence on the distinct phases of students' Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) within an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. Despite its ubiquity, a gap exists in understanding how students practically use GenAI to self-regulate their learning and what adaptive strategies they employ. This study utilized a mixed-methods approach to explore this phenomenon. Participants were 100 undergraduate EFL students in an Indonesian university with at least three months of experience using ChatGPT. Data were collected through an adapted SRL questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Quantitative data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and ANOVA, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between GenAI use and overall SRL (r = .55), although its influence was strongest on the forethought (planning) phase and markedly weaker on the self-reflection phase. Qualitatively, students devised adaptive strategies such as dynamic scaffolding and learner-driven fading to foster independence. However, these were often counteracted by hindering factors, primarily cognitive offloading, the illusion of competence, and a widespread deficit in critical digital literacy. Theoretically, this study contributes by articulating how GenAI reshapes core learning processes, proposing necessary extensions to established frameworks of self-regulation and sociocultural learning . The pedagogical implications are profound, demanding a curricular shift towards foundational critical digital literacy and a fundamental redesign of assessment to prioritize process over product
Transforming Learning Independence in Future Science Teachers: The Powerful Impact of a Project-Based Collaborative Learning (PjBCL) Model
This study examines the transformative impact of the project-based collaborative learning (PjBCL) model on the learning independence of prospective science teachers. As the educational paradigm shifts toward a learner-centered approach, efforts to foster independence and responsibility for learning in prospective educators are becoming increasingly important. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a mixed-methods approach, involving 64 students from the science education study program who were enrolled in a course on developing science teaching materials. Students were divided into an experimental class and a control class. The experimental class participated in a series of project-based collaborative learning (PjBCL) activities, while the control class received regular instruction. Data on learning independence were collected through self-regulated learning (SRL) questionnaires, reflective journals, and classroom observations. The results showed a significant increase in the prospective teachers' ability to plan, coordinate, and implement their learning process independently in the experimental class. Furthermore, the collaborative nature of this model encouraged shared accountability, peer support, and active involvement of all students, which overall formed a more independent learning mindset. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of a project-based collaborative learning model in preparing prospective science teachers who are independent, reflective, and innovative
The Pattern of Building Character for Students in Salaf and Modern Islamic Boarding Schools at East OKU Regency South Sumatra Province
Character education has became a critical issue amid the moral degradation of the younger generation, such as the prevalence of brawls and behaviors that deviate from norms. Islamic boarding schools, as Indonesia's oldest Islamic educational institutions, play a strategic role in shaping students' character through traditional (salaf) and modern approaches. This study compares the character-building patterns of students at the Salaf Darul Falah Tulungsari Islamic Boarding School and the Modern Nurussalam Sidogede Islamic Boarding School in OKU Timur Regency to understand their characteristics, methods, and impacts on forming noble character. This study aims to: analyze the fundamental characteristics of both pesantren, identify the character-building patterns for students in each pesantren, and compare the character-building patterns to reveal similarities, differences, and their effectiveness in shaping students with noble character, discipline, and relevance to contemporary needs. This study employs a qualitative approach with a comparative case study design. Data were collected through observation, interviews with pesantren leaders, teachers, and students, and documentation, including vision-mission statements, organizational structures, and activity photos. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and comparatively to identify the characteristics and patterns of character building in both pesantren. The Salaf Darul Falah Islamic Boarding School implements a dual education system (classical and salaf) focusing on classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning) using sorogan and bandongan methods, alongside a culture of mutual cooperation (ro’an) based on the values of Iman-Islam-Ihsan. Character building is carried out through exemplary behavior of the kiai, habituation, and strict supervision, producing students with noble character, discipline, and a strong religious identity. Conversely, the Modern Nurussalam Islamic Boarding School adopts the KMI curriculum, integrating religious and general knowledge with a 24-hour holistic approach, using formal (lectures, discussions) and informal (habituation, exemplary behavior) methods, and emphasizing the Panca Jiwa culture of discipline and leadership. This results in students who are globally aware, independent, and ready to be agents of change. The comparison shows that both approaches complement each other, with Darul Falah excelling in religious tradition and Nurussalam in modern adaptation, both effectively shaping character in line with their respective visions
Rasch-Based Cognitive Diagnostic Assessment to Measure Critical Thinking Skills in Islamic Religious Education
This research aimed to measure the critical thinking skills of students in the Islamic Religious Education course through the application of a cognitive diagnostic assessment based on the Rasch model. The background of this research stems from the need for an assessment instrument that not only provides summative scores but also diagnoses students’ abilities in a more specific and in-depth manner. It employed a quantitative design involving 107 students, and the developed instrument was validated using Rasch analysis to ensure validity, reliability, and item fit. The results showed that the majority of students are in the moderate category (52,34%), followed by the high category (30,84%), and the low category (16,82%). These results highlight the diversity of students’ critical thinking skills, which require adaptive teaching strategies. The novelty of this research lies not only in the application of the Rasch model in cognitive diagnostic assessment but also in its implementation in the context of Islamic Religious Education, which has traditionally been measured through conventional tests emphasizing memorization and conceptual understanding. This approach allows for a more detailed mapping of critical thinking sub-skills in values- and ethics-based courses, going beyond previous research practices that generally focus on science or technical skills. Thus, this research contributes to the development of more accurate, adaptive, contextual, and relevant assessment instruments to support improvements in the quality of learning in higher education
The Mediating Role of Job Satisfaction in the Relationship between Quality of Work Life, Motivation, and Turnover Intention among Millennial Lecturers in Islamic Higher Education
This study investigates the mediating role of job satisfaction in the relationship between Quality of Work Life (QWL) and work motivation on turnover intention among millennial lecturers in Islamic higher education institutions, specifically within Muhammadiyah universities in the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area. Using a quantitative explanatory design, data were collected from 290 lecturers through structured questionnaires and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the Partial Least Squares (PLS) approach. The results reveal that both QWL and motivation have a significant positive impact on job satisfaction, while job satisfaction exerts a significant negative effect on turnover intention. Moreover, job satisfaction partially mediates the effects of QWL and motivation on turnover intention, indicating that a high-quality work environment and strong intrinsic motivation enhance satisfaction, which subsequently reduces the desire to leave. The findings highlight that improving QWL through supportive leadership, fair compensation, and work–life balance, as well as fostering motivation through recognition and professional growth opportunities, can strengthen lecturers’ commitment and retention. The study contributes theoretically by integrating Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory and Social Exchange Theory within an Islamic management perspective, demonstrating that human resource practices rooted in ethical and spiritual values effectively sustain institutional stability. Practically, the results provide strategic insights for higher education policymakers to design adaptive and value-based HR frameworks that meet the professional and generational expectations of millennial lecturers in Islamic universitie
