    LIVED EXPERIENCES OF GAY BLACK CISGENDER MEN VICARIOUSLY EXPOSED TO THE ORLANDO SHOOTING

    The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of gay Black cisgender men who were vicariously exposed to the 2016 Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting. Minority stress theory was the theoretical framework to ground this research study. This theory and lens was used to better understand the position of being a minority in society and the associated stress at the intersection community violence and identity. The study included 11 participants that identified as gay Black cisgender men using a combination of purposeful and snowball sampling. A demographic questionnaire was administered to gain background information about the participants in the study and a semi-structured interview protocol was used to gain qualitative data. Participants answered 11 demographic questions and 19 open ended questions. Three major themes emerged from the data: identity development, impact of media and post traumatic coping. Future research was suggested to explore the intersection of vicarious exposure to community violence and all identities within the LGBTQ community.     Accessible Course Materials 101: What you need to know to ensure equal digital access

    Equal access to course content and materials is the responsibility of institutions of higher education, under the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act. Universal Design (UD) is a concept from architecture that has many applications in higher education as it relates to accessibility under the ADA’s requirement to ensure effective communication. As universities become increasingly diverse, it is important to consider the details of course design that may present barriers to a wide range of users. Digital accessibility involves the creation and maintenance of websites, mobile applications, electronic documents, and instructional media that can be readily navigated and understood by students of all learning styles, including those with disabilities. This session will discuss UD in Learning as a paradigm, and the application of those principles to courses. We will demonstrate the difference between accessible and inaccessible materials, discuss common pitfalls of creating accessible content, and provide information to instructors to assist with creating or repairing course materials

    Mitigating Cybersecurity Threats to Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities

    Healthcare facilities rely heavily on digital information systems to deliver patient care and manage confidential patient information. However, healthcare networks and medical devices are highly vulnerable to attackers, who can use the information to victimize medical facilities as well as the patients themselves. The functioning of healthcare systems can be seriously impeded by cyberattacks, restricting information sharing among hospital personnel and delaying or preventing patient care. Although federal legislation and regulatory guidelines have been put forth to improve responses to cyberattacks and enhance patient information protections, the cybersecurity measures in place in many hospitals can be easily bypassed by motivated offenders via entry points in the facilities’ cybersecurity systems. In response to these threats to critical infrastructure, experts have proposed several risk mitigation strategies that healthcare facilities can employ to improve information technology systems and mitigate vulnerabilities associated with human factors. This report provides a summary of (1) the literature on the types and characteristics of cyberattacks most often perpetrated against healthcare providers, (2) the theory and research from criminology and criminal justice on the factors associated with cybercrime victimization risk, and (3) the best practices proposed by experts to help inform policymakers and healthcare professionals in Texas and nationwide

    Assessing Critical Energy Infrastructure Using Geo-Spatial Technologies

    This paper discusses the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in mapping and analysis of incidents related to security and integrity of critical energy infrastructure. It includes a discussion of what GIS and related geospatial technologies involve; sources of energy infrastructure related geo-spatial data. As the leading energy producing state, Texas has a major economic reliance on the energy sector and the energy sector uses GIS and related technologies. The energy sector uses GIS extensively for its ongoing needs, but it also faces a range of threats such as floods, winter storms, cyber-attacks, sabotage, vandalism, and physical attacks that can be mapped and analyzed with GIS. This paper shows the use of GIS to map examples of all these threats and analyzes their spatial distribution throughout the United States, but with a central focus on Texas

    Effects Different Percentages of Blood Flow Restriction While Walking on Muscle Oxygen Saturation

    PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect different relative pressures of blood flow restriction (BFR) had on muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) while walking at 3.0 mph. METHODS: Fifteen physically active healthy adults performed seven 5-minute stages of walking at 3.0 mph with a blood flow restriction cuff applied to the proximal portion of the left or right leg while bilateral SmO2 changes were measured using near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS) bilaterally on the medial head of the gastrocnemius (GM) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles. Other measurements including heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and ground contact time balance (GCTB) were also collected. SmO2 measurements were analyzed using two-way repeated measures ANOVA while other measurements were analyzed using one-way repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: We observed a significant main effect of LOP (limb occlusion pressure)% on the difference in total area of desaturation that occurred during each occlusion stage (ADS), F (1.432, 40.08) = 32.74, p < 0.0001, initial ΔSmO2, F (1.8, 52) = 28, p < 0.001, and final ΔSmO2, F (1.359, 38.04) = 9.631, p = 0.0016. Tukey’s post hoc analysis of differences in ADS revealed significant differences for all comparisons except at 40% vs 80% LOP (p = 0.0821) for the GM. Post hoc analysis of initial ΔSmO2 revealed a significant difference for all comparisons except at 40% vs 80% (p = 0.555) for the VL. Multiple comparisons for final ΔSmO2 only showed a significant difference at 40% vs. 100% (p = 0.0029) and 80% vs 100% (p =0.0079) for the VL. CONCLUSION: The results did not support our hypothesis that there would be no significant difference in SmO2 between 40%, 80%, and 100% LOP. Multiple comparison results differed between ADS, initial ΔSmO2, and final ΔSmO2. ADS data was used to reflect the magnitude of SmO2 desaturation on the VL and GM during each occlusion stage. The magnitude of SmO2 desaturation was statistically significant between LOP% except for between 40% and 80% LOP of the GM

    COMPARISON OF ENDOHELMINTH PARASITES IN BLACK DRUM (POGONIAS CROMIS) AND RED DRUM (SCIAENOPS OCELLATUS) FROM THE SABINE LAKE ESTUARY

    The black drum (Pogonias cromis) and the red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) are two closely related fish species that occur throughout the Gulf of Mexico. These species utilize estuarine systems as brooding grounds for their young, which offers some protection, and readily available food sources to the juvenile individuals. This study sought to understand how endo-parasitic communities of juvenile and sub-adult individuals of these two drum species compared, and sought to determine what the effects of host size and habitat salinity were on the parasitic communities in each fish species and between fish species. We conducted a helminth survey on black drum (n=59) and red drum (n=61) that were caught from Sabine Lake in the spring and summer of 2018. The overall parasitic intensity and the Shannon-Wiener diversity were calculated for each individual fish, and were compared to host size and habitat salinity, respectively, via linear regression to determine effects of the factors on the parasite community. Parasitic communities were compared between fish using Jaccard’s index, Hutcheson-t test of Shannon-Wiener diversity, Percent Similarity index, and a mixed-effects model. Percent similarity index and the mixed effects model were used to determine if host size and habitat salinity affected the similarity of the parasitic communities to one another. From these fish we have identified 38 parasite species (23 nematodes, 6 trematodes, 5 acanthocephalans, and 4 cestodes). The relationship of host size and intensity of parasitic infections was found to be significant for both the black (R2=0.29, p<0.05) and the red drum (R2=0.16, p<0.05). The Jaccard index value was 0.2895, or 28.95% similarity between the communities, and Hutcheson-t did show significant difference (p<0.05) in diversity between the two communities. The highest percent similarities were between the small sized black and red drum, and between the black and red drum caught in the lowest salinities. This study is significant as a primary helminth survey from Sabine Lake, and as new host and locality documentations for several parasite species

    Not Content to Just Be a Gamer: A Motivation Analysis of Gaming Content Creators on YouTube and Twitch

    YouTube and Twitch have become the homes for watching others play video games. Previous studies show that consumers of content on these new media channels harbor similar motivations to television viewers (Rubin 1981; Sjoblom and Hamari 2017). But what motivates players, a new class of media producers, to perform for an online public? This study analyzes content creators’ motivations through an innovative dual approach. We conducted interviews with small-audience gamer-creators (N=11) guided by both the uses and gratifications approach and by self-determination theory. The study found that producing content primarily gratified a gamer-creator’s social and personal integrative needs, as well as their affective needs. The study also found that creating content on YouTube and Twitch provided the gamer-creator with an environment conducive to intrinsic motivation through the satisfaction of their autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs. Although research on content creators is in its infancy, the dual approach that the study develops may provide a useful basis for future studies on gamer-creators as well as content creators in other spheres

    Current Practices in Designing and Developing Effective Learning Center Spaces in Postsecondary Education

    This qualitative case study was conducted to understand the process learning center administrators used in the creation or remodeling of a learning center space at a 2-year college system in the Midwest. Participants of the study were learning center directors, facilities, information technology, or administrator team members. Data were collected through interviews, which were transcribed and analyzed using first- and second-cycle coding to conduct a within-case analysis. The results of the within-case analysis were used to conduct a cross-case analysis. Themes emerged from the process used to create or remodel a learning center: which were needs assessment, coalition, implementation, and additional changes. The emergent themes from the extent to which learning center administrators considered pedagogy, space, and technology in their learning center designs were instructional, space, and technology considerations. Based on the findings of the study, implications for practice and recommendations for further research are shared

    ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EVENTS AND COMPLEX POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER SYMPTOMOLOGY IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE STUDENTS VERSUS NON-CRIMINAL JUSTICE STUDENTS

    Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been correlated with mental health issues, including Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) in police officers after active duty, although research has not focused on symptomology prior to active service. Criminal Justice university majors and non-Criminal Justice majors were surveyed using the ACE questionnaire and the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) to measure symptomology of PTSD and CPTSD. No statistically significant relationship was found between choice of major and ACE score, indicating that students pursuing a career in police work did not report more ACEs than other majors. This finding differs from prior research; implicating that aggregate trauma from active police service as well as ACE score may impact PTSD and CPTSD symptomology longitudinally. PTSD and CPTSD symptomology as measured on the ITQ did not differ according to major in college students. A robust correlation was shown between ACEs score on PTSD or CPTSD experiences on the ITQ, which is in keeping with prior research. Individual ACEs were not studied, and future research is needed to ascertain if certain types of ACEs are higher in students seeking a career in police work than those in other disciplines. Data from this study suggests that university students remand with PTSD and CPTSD symptoms across majors

    Emergency Medical Responder Certification for Law Enforcement

    Law enforcement agencies should require officers to become Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certified. The public deserves professionalism and training from law enforcement. Beyond complete transparency, the public expects a professionally trained police force in every aspect of the job, particularly when it comes to medical emergencies. Standardizing the process of certification on a national level and protecting the public are the two major reasons The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) was created in 1970 (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, 2022). The mission/purpose of NREMT is to provide a valid, uniform process to access the knowledge and skills needed for competent practice by EMS professionals, as well as maintain a registry of certification (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, 2022). Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) is the first and most basic level of certification that officers can obtain. Officers with the EMR certification are not only an asset to their communities but are also in a better position to aid their fellow officers in critical incidents. EMR certified officers must remain up to date on current procedures and innovations by completing ongoing continuing education to maintain their certification. While there are other emergency medical trainings available, none are part of a national registry that require ongoing training to maintain certification. EMRs have the knowledge and skills to provide immediate lifesaving interventions (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, 2022). Therefore, law enforcement agencies should require officers to become Emergency Medical Responder certified.LEMI
