    Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Supply Chain Risk Management

    The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions in the corporate landscape has prompted a wider discussion among public stakeholders and policymakers about the best practices for leveraging this evolving technology to coordinate the global supply chain. In area of supply chain risk management (SCRM), scholars and practitioners have only recently turned their attention to how AI can bolster, or even supplement humans in decision-making processes. While AI holds a great deal of promise in reducing the potential for severe supply chain disruptions, ethical considerations and the novelty of AI-based solutions can introduce multiple challenges for critical infrastructure organizations that may be eager to incorporate this technology. The aim of this technical paper is to describe recent advancements and emerging trends in the use of AI to quantify risk crisis management readiness and make strategic choices using identified risks in decision-making. In what follows, I will provide a review of key research findings, methodologies, and innovations made in the areas of AI and SCRM. Additionally, this paper unpacks core ethical issues including algorithmic bias, responsible data handling, and outsourcing decision-making. These are interrelated issues that critical infrastructure corporations must navigate to maintain a commitment to safety and security while increasing organizational resilience. To conclude, this paper outlines several suggested best practices for businesses that are eager to incorporate artificial intelligence into supply chain risk management protocols and discusses expected trends in the use of AI in SCRM

    Evaluating the Utility of the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC): Predicting Juvenile Offending Outcomes

    The U.S. incarcerates more of its youth population than any other country. The literature supports delinquency is not a random process, but rather people seem to progress in predictable developmental patterns of criminal offending. Despite pervasive implications juvenile offending poses on society, there remains a lack of understanding concerning juvenile criminal behavior patterns and mental health needs over time. Literature indicates a lack of research has been conducted on the BASC, particularly among youths who exhibit high rates of delinquent behavior or are justice-involved. This study examined relations between justice-involved youths’ BASC-3, Self-Report of Personality and Parent Rating Scale composite score profiles, and psycholegal outcomes such as youths’: 1) total number of legal charges across time, 2) desistance vs. recidivism within 2 years of their initial legal charge, and 3) inpatient hospitalizations/placements at psychiatric residential treatment facilities across time. Lower Inattention/Hyperactivity and higher Internalizing Problems scores per youth self-report were linked to a greater likelihood of 2-year recidivism. Higher Externalizing Problems scores per parent report were linked to a greater likelihood of inpatient hospitalization/residential placement history. Post-Hoc analysis revealed parents rated their justice-involved children higher on BASC-3 Internalizing Problems compared to youths’ self-reported ratings. Findings suggest BASC Internalizing and Externalizing Problems score profiles may have utility for informing evaluators of justice-involved youths’ psycholegal trajectories and needs

    Digital Inclusion with OER: Navigating Equity, Accessibility, Usability and Representation in Higher Education

    This session explores innovative strategies to enhance accessibility, foster connection and belonging, and promote equity in digital learning environments through Open Educational Resources (OER). We will share practical tips for educators on integrating accessible digital practices into their curriculum. Highlighting simple yet effective adjustments, our session aims to demonstrate that small changes can significantly enhance the learning experience for all students. We will address common barriers, biases, and assumptions to digital access and showcase how thoughtful design and content creation using OER can overcome these obstacles, making education more attainable and engaging for everyone, including those with disabilities. Presenters will showcase real-world examples and activities directly from our classrooms, including the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), inclusive course syllabi language, authentic assessments, and strategies for offering choice and flexibility in assignments. Our goal is to inspire educators to consider how they can contribute to a more inclusive digital landscape in higher education. By fostering an understanding of digital inclusion and providing actionable strategies with OER, we hope to empower community college educators to make meaningful changes in their digital content, benefiting all students.     The Lived Experiences of Queer Faculty Working in CACREP-Accredited Counselor Education Programs

    Queer professionals have historically experienced discrimination, persecution, and oppression in the workplace. While the field of counselor education has ethical and accreditation standards that require multicultural inclusion and competence, no empirical studies currently explore the experiences of queer counselor educators in the workplace. An interpretive phenomenological approach was used to explore the experiences of queer faculty working in CACREP-accredited counselor education programs. Four participants completed semi-structured interviews, resulting in the development of four themes: 1) career journey, 2) visibility matters, 3) if not us then who, and 4) work in progress. These themes were used to provide implications for counselor education programs. Recommendations for future research related to this topic were also provided based on the findings of the study

    Exploring the Effects of Self-Paced Learning, Inquiry-Guided Learning, and Collaborative Learning on Middle School (6-8) Students' Interest in Pursuing STEM/CS

    The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine any correlations between an increase in knowledge from activities which utilize self-paced learning, inquiry-guided learning, and collaborative learning pedagogical strategies and students’ intentions to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and computer science (CS). The students were comprised of underserved, underrepresented middle school (6-8) students from the Southeast Texas area who took part in computer science and STEM-themed summer programs at Lamar University, in Beaumont, TX. Data for this study was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlational statistics, parametric tests, and non-parametric tests. Tests included paired-samples t-tests, Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, comparison of means reports, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results from this study indicate that all three of the selected learning strategies, self-paced learning, inquiry-guided learning, and collaborative learning, produced positive effects on student self-perceived CS knowledge and interest in STEM/CS. The results suggested that overall, self-paced learning may have the least amount of effect. However, none of the three learning strategies seemed to indicate no effect or negative effects. Additionally, it was shown that when ethnicities were compared, inquiry-guided learning showed the highest average gain in student self-perceived CS knowledge among the three learning strategies for all ethnicities. All ethnicities also showed a higher average interest in CS courses than CS careers. There were varied interest levels in terms of CS careers when comparing by grade level, however, all grade levels showed similar interest levels in terms of CS courses. Implications for practice were offered including the suggestion that middle school CS educators might consider incorporating the learning strategies independently or in combination while developing CS curriculum. Also, it was suggested that middle school CS educators might focus on developing students interest in CS courses in middle school more than their interest in CS careers. Recommendations for future research were made including ways to expand the generalizability of the results of future related research. Though the relatively small sample size of the study’s participants cannot fully reflect full representations of the experiences of the studied demographics, the study still offers insights into the effectiveness of the targeted learning strategies

    A Phenomenological Study: Experiences of Black Women Leading as Assistant Principals During the Racial Turmoil of 2020

    During Spring of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic collided with the murder of George Floyd which created a racial divide throughout the United States. This point in time brought feelings of fear, frustration, and exhaustion throughout the country. Though the United States had experienced riots and protest in past decades, 2020 was different. Due to the emotional, physical, and psychological effects related to the pandemic as well as the continued murdering of Black and Brown people, school leaders were faced with an array of challenges that impacted the communities they served. The purpose of this dissertation was to understand the lived experiences of Black women who served as assistant principals during the racial turmoil of 2020. A phenomenological method of research facilitated the collection of the lived experiences of five Black women serving as assistant principals in several school districts in Southeast Texas to describe the common meaning of their experiences following the racial turmoil of 2020. One-on-one interviews were used throughout the entire duration of the study to collect data from participants who had experienced the phenomenon and then a composite description of the experiences of the individuals was developed. The results of this study of Black women leading schools during the racial turmoil of 2020 included an identification of five themes: “being on edge,” “there really wasn’t a plan,” “it was more about COVID,” “look, I’m just trying to make it through,” and “being the representation at the table.” Each theme was created using the participants words. The women who participated in this study vocalized their initial emotions surrounding the murder of George Floyd were that of sadness, shock, and confusion. The year 2020 brought a lot of challenges for the women in this study but they were able to use their resilience to move through this difficult time. This study revealed that Black women mostly struggled with the balancing of emotions, balancing of work and life, and supporting their staff. Furthermore, this study revealed recommendations that stakeholders should consider when supporting and retaining Black school leaders during crisis or turmoil such as addressing racial concerns, providing resources, and including Black leaders in decision making

    Undocumented and Unafraid: A Multimethod Investigation of Undocumented Student Activists

    Using narrative inquiry to collect data through interviews and an arts-based approach to present the findings through a narrative film screenplay format, this multimethod qualitative study aimed to expose the reality faced by undocumented students, especially those involved with activism, through tales of resilience and grit. The theories that framed this study were Aguilar’s (2019) UndocuCrit and Freire’s (2010) Critical Consciousness. Two undocumented contributors participated in this study, taking part in interviews and in a photo-elicitation exercise, where they were invited to bring pictures that represented their lives as undocumented or DACA students and then reflect on the images to provide a deeper insight into their reality. The resulting fictionalized screenplay is a composite of the literature review, theoretical frameworks, data collection, and my own experiences as an immigrant in the U.S., and it is a coming-of-age story that sheds light on the lived experiences of an undocumented student activist

    A Systematic Review of Challenges in Applying Immersive Technologies for Critical Infrastructure Emergency Response

    Given the rapid advancements and growing importance of immersive technologies in the critical infrastructure sector, it is essential to understand the challenges to their effective implementation. Thus, this article aimed to identify and investigate the challenges hindering the application of these technologies for emergency response, irrespective of the specific technology or sector involved. This was achieved through a qualitative approach, utilizing a systematic review via bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer software. Additionally, R Studio and the biblioshiny package were used to create interactive visualizations for the project. Scopus was chosen for this search due to its comprehensive coverage of current scientific literature and its efficiency in handling large datasets. The research yielded a comprehensive list of 114 challenges, which were then reviewed and reduced to 33 challenges after rounds of refinement. These were subsequently grouped into five key categories based on thematic similarities. By categorizing these challenges into key thematic areas, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the obstacles that need to be addressed to leverage the full potential of immersive technologies in enhancing emergency response and critical infrastructure resilience. The originality of this study lies in its rigorous approach to identifying and categorizing the myriad challenges faced by the critical infrastructure sector, offering both researchers and practitioners a structured approach to guide future efforts in overcoming these issues. This contribution not only highlights the specific areas requiring attention but also paves the way for targeted innovations and policy developments that can facilitate the broader implementation of immersive technologies in emergency management
