Don't Believe the Hype: Why ChatGPT May Breathe New Life into College Writing Instruction
This paper argues that the threat Large Language Models (LLMs),
such as ChatGPT, pose to writing instruction is both not entirely new and a
welcome disruption to the way writing instruction is typically delivered. This
new technology seems to be prompting many instructors to question whether
essay responses to paper prompts reflect students’ own thinking and learning.
This uneasiness is long overdue, and the hope is it leads instructors to explore
evidence-based best practices familiar from the scholarship of teaching and
learning. We’ve known for some time how to better teach our students to
think and write. Perhaps the arrival of LLMs will get us to put these lessons
into widespread practice

RHETORICAL ECOLOGY’S EFFECTS ON COMMUNITY HEALTH ORGANIZATION WEB DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION WITH THE TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY
Community health organizations serve marginalized communities with their health needs. One such community is the transgender community. This study compares the communication via community health organization websites with the transgender community regarding services offered of two different sites. One site located in Houston, Texas, and the other located in San Francisco, California. The sites are examined for accessibility, queer usability, and rhetorical content. The comparison utilizes a framework melding Richard Bucannon’s design rhetoric, Ramler’s queer usability, and Edbauer’s rhetorical ecology called Queer Rhetorical Design Ecology that says that design choices are rhetorical choices, and queer design accounts for marginalized users in the design phase. It is posited that the negative rhetorical ecology regarding transgender and gender non-conforming people in Texas, surrounding the Legacy site, acts as a limiting factor in the amount and style of communication the organization utilizes when it designed and redesigned its website. Likewise, a promoting factor is the result of the rhetorical ecology surrounding the San Francisco site which leads to a more robust design and more robust level of communication with the transgender community
Online Course Evaluation Instruments and their Effect on Self-regulated Learning in Online Courses
The number of online courses that have been developed by faculty continues to
increase in higher education. The purpose of this mixed-methods research study is to
investigate the effects of online courses developed using the Quality Matters (QM)
framework on self-regulated learning behaviors for students enrolled in online courses.
The research was undertaken using self-regulated learning theory and the QM
framework. Students enrolled in fully online courses were recruited to participate in this
study by completing pre and post Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire
(MSLQ) surveys, as well as complete a post-course survey inquiring to the learning
strategies utilized in their online course. The findings of this research study indicate that
there are no statistical differences in the post-MSLQ composite scores with students
enrolled in a course that was developed using the QM framework versus students
enrolled in an online course that was not developed using the QM framework. Qualitative
data self-reported by students indicated that the organization of the course was a
prominent theme in courses developed with the QM framework. Future research
implications and future research recommendations are also discussed
FROM THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT TO #METOO: VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN REPORTING IN THE U.S. FROM 1992-2021
Current literature indicates that violence against women (VAW) is chronically underreported due to numerous factors, such as fear of retaliation, societal stigma, and practical obstacles. Although extant research has noted changes in reporting of VAW to the police, gaps remain in national-level analyses through 2021, particularly in comparing sexual and non-sexual reporting. Employing incident-level data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), this study explored macro-level changes in reporting sexual and non-sexual VAW to the police from 1992 to 2021, a period notable for significant and, at times, unprecedented societal shifts and legislative reforms. The study’s multistage analytic approach found significant changes in reporting VAW crimes to the police from 1992 to 2021, identifying three distinct periods (1992-2001, 2002- 2017, and 2018-2021) that showed notable shifts in reporting. Across all periods, nonsexual crimes consistently had higher reporting rates than sexual crimes, which remained significantly underreported across all periods. Further, there was an increase in reporting sexual crimes from 2002-2017 that did not continue into 2018-2021, where rates fell below the 1992-2001 baseline. This study offers an extensive view of VAW reporting from 1992 to 2021 for researchers to build upon in future investigations. Additionally, the study offers law enforcement practitioners valuable insights into changes in the reporting of sexual and non-sexual VAW
DIFFERENCES IN THE READING PERFORMANCE OF TEXAS GRADE 4 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN TITLE I, PART A AND NON-TITLE I, PART A SCHOOLS AS A FUNCTION OF GENDER AND EMERGENT BILINGUAL STATUS: A MULTIYEAR, STATEWIDE INVESTIGATION
The purpose of this journal-ready dissertation was to determine the degree to
which enrollment in a Title I, Part A school was related to the reading performance of Grade 4 students on the Texas state-mandated reading assessment. Specifically examined was the extent to which boys and girls enrolled in Title I, Part A schools and non-Title I, Part A schools and Emergent Bilingual and non-Emergent Bilingual students enrolled in Title I, Part A schools differed in their reading performance during the 2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2018-2019 school years. A causal-comparative research design was present for all three studies (Johnson & Christensen, 2020). Archival data were collected through a Public Information Request form submitted to and fulfilled by the Texas Education Agency Public Education Information Management System for the 2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2018-2019 school years. After conducting statistical analyses, Texas Grade 4 students enrolled in Title I, Part A schools were determined to have statistically significantly lower reading scores than Texas Grade 4 students who were enrolled in non-Title I, Part A schools. With
respect to gender, boys and girls enrolled in Title I, Part A schools had statistically significantly lower reading test scores than their peers enrolled in non-Title I, Part A schools. In all three Reading Reporting Categories and all grade level performance standards (i.e., Approaches Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, and Masters Grade Level), boys and girls enrolled in non-Title I, Part A schools outperformed their peers enrolled in Title I, Part A schools. Effect sizes for the Reading Reporting Categories for boys and girls for all three school years were moderate. Regarding language status, Emergent Bilingual students enrolled in Title I, Part A schools performed statistically significantly lower on the Grade 4 STAAR Reading exam than their non-Emergent Bilingual peers
enrolled in Title I, Part A schools. In all three Reading Reporting Categories and all grade level performance standards, Emergent Bilingual students enrolled in Title I, Part A schools had lower reading skills than did non-Emergent Bilingual students. Effect sizes for the Reading Reporting Categories were small for all three school years
Structural and Thermodynamic Reactivity Studies of Nickel Complexes Containing a Combination of Tridentate and Monodentate Phosphine Ligands
Transition metal hydrides are crucial intermediates in many catalytic processes, including CO2 hydrogenation and H2 activation. These complexes can act as either a hydride or proton donors, which can be thermodynamically categorized according to their pKa or ΔG°H– parameters for acidities and hydricities, respectively. This study will elaborate on the structural and thermodynamic properties of nickel complexes containing a combination of one tridentate triphosphine (PP2) or diphosphinoamine (PNP) ligand and one monophosphine (PR3) ligand. The thermodynamic hydride donor abilities of the triphosphine complexes were determined to be 55.6 kcal/mol and 57.6 kcal/mol for [HNi(PP2)(PMe3)]+ and [HNi(PP2)(PEt3)]+, respectively, based on studies of their heterolytic activation of H2. The pKa value of the PMe3 complex was found to be approximately 20 based on proton transfer equilibria with NEt3. The value for the PEt3 complex was larger and the value for the PPh3 complex was lower, but proton-transfer equilibria for these species could not be accurately measured. The structures of the Ni(0) complexes, the Ni(II) dications, and the Ni(II) hydrides were studied by X-ray crystallography. The structures of the four-coordinate Ni(II) dications are square planar and those of the five-coordinate Ni(II) hydrides are trigonal bipyramidal with the hydride in an axial position, analogous to their previously studied Co(I) and Rh(I) analogues. The structures of the Ni(0) PMe3 and PEt3 complexes are tetrahedral, comparable to those of the previously studied PPh3 complex. For the complexes with a tridentate PNP ligand, the Ni(0) complexes were found to be unstable, and studies focused on reactions of the Ni(II) hydride species. The hydride ion in this species could be transferred to hydride acceptors, including a phosphine ligand containing an organic hydride acceptor. When no hydride acceptor was present, the hydride appeared to transfer intramolecularly to the amine in the form of a proton upon addition of a ligand
