A Terracotta Plaque in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection. Judgement scene or Congiarium?

    No full text
The subject of this article is a terracotta plaque in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection formerly in the Barberini Collection, Rome. It shows Christ and six apostles seated on a dais with a small-scale group of men, women, and children below. This highly unusual scene has been interpreted by some scholars as the Last Judgement, by others as congiarium scene. In my opinion, it is definitely not a judgment, but rather a contamination of the traditional Christ as a teacher and a congiarium scene. There are a few other examples of Christian scenes with the inclusion of elements from secular art. These elements need not have been inspired by imperial monuments, however. One may also think of objects with scenes from the activities of high dignitaries, such as diptychs and the like

Hamsun down south and Hamsun up north. The art of arguing for an author museum

    No full text
In 2005, two ambitious local initiatives were launched that independently of each other argued for establishing a national centre in their particular community to commemorate Nobel laureate Knut Hamsun (1859–1952): one in Grimstad on the southern coast of Norway, and the other at Hamarøy in northern Norway. Both places boasted a special ownership to the world famous author, but only the northern initiative materialized and a new museum opened in time for Hamsun’s 150 year anniversary. Why did Grimstad’s project fail and Hamarøy’s succeed? How did The Knut Hamsun Centre in Hamarøy follow up their stated goals and ambitions when planning the exhibitions? And how did Grimstad motivate plans for a downscaled centre several years later? A major issue in the article as well as in the discussion of the projects, is how the initiators argue for celebrating an author who supported Hitler and the Nazis during the war. Rhetorical and textual analysis of four documents offer insight into deliberations of how to exhibit a problematic legacy. Nyckelord: estetiska naturmöten, affektivt lärande, transformativt lärande, miljöperspektiv, desorienterande dilemman   Avant-garde without authority – environmentalism in a lower primary class AbstractThis article examines students’ actions after encountering disorienting dilemmas within outdoor education in the forest. The article is based on a study conducted in a Swedish primary school, in second grade (8 years), where a student teacher, together with a supervisor, has planned and conducted a Storyline with the aim of creating relationships with trees in order to counteract plant blindness. The empirical data consists of field notes from participant observation and transcripts from video recordings and one interview with the student teacher. Qualitative content analysis is used with focus on affective and transformative learning. The result shows that when students had the opportunity to explore the forest on their own, possibilities of aesthetic experiences and encounters with disorienting dilemmas were given. Hence, affective and transformative learning may be a vital pedagogical departure, which can lead to students’ changing self-image and ways to view the world. Keywords: aesthetic meetings with nature, affective learning theory, transformative learning, environmental perspective, disorienting dilemma

Student texts in Physical Education and Health – a text ethnographic genre analysis

    No full text
The aim of the study is to identify and describe genres in Physical Education and Health in lower secondary school and show how these genres position students. The texts students write are analyzed in terms of what they do as part of the social action which they are a part of. In the study, genre is defined as conventionalized ways of interacting through texts. The data was collected through ethnographic methods, and the material consists of student texts, fieldnotes, video recordings from lessons along with interviews with a teacher and students. Subject didactic interdiscursivity is an important concept applied in the analysis, and so is affordance which is used to analyze to what degree the texts invite to certain types of actions while restricting others. Results show that the most prominent genres identified in the study deal with the measuring and training of the body. The students are mainly positioned physiologically according to their physical abilities, but the hybridity of the genres also allows for the positioning of students in relation to ideas from the humanities and social sciences. &nbsp

Missing concordance between knowledge and efficacy among Danish science teacher students regarding education for sustainable development

    No full text
We conducted a nation-wide survey of Danish science teacher students specializing in science subjects, in order to investigate their knowledge, attitude and self-efficacy on central aspects of education for sustainable development. Our study finds, in accordance with previous publications, a high degree of positive attitude towards the importance of teaching sustainability, and a significant positive correlation between self-efficacy and self-assessed knowledge about the topics in the survey. However, in our study both self-efficacy and self-assessed knowledge correlate negatively with actual knowledge, indicating that some of our participants are subject to an overinflated self-assessment while others may underestimate their proficiency within the topics. In cognitive psychology, this phenomenon is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect, and we discuss its implications for how best to ensure quality in education for sustainable development in our schools

The Case of the Missing Anastasis. An iconographical conundrum in the presbytery of S. Maria Antiqua

    No full text
In the present contribution, two authors approach a limited part of the iconography in the sanctuary of Santa Maria Antiqua in Rome, painted during the pontificate of John VII (705-707 AD). Two different hypotheses will try to come closer to a solution of a problem concerning the Christ cycle on the sanctuary side walls, where Christ’s appearance to the Disciples on the Road to Emmaus is the concluding motif. This rather reasonable solution stands, however, in huge contrast to John’s Christ cycle in his oratory in Old Saint Peter’s Basilica which concludes with the ʽHarrowing of Hellʼ or Christ’s descent into Hades. Being a novelty, this, so called Anastasis-scene, where Christ liberates the prisoners of Hades, has a strong soteriological, or salvation historical, meaning. Anastasis, which, in fact, appears in two different locations in John’s rich assembly of motifs in S. Maria Antiqua, is wholly absent from the highly ʽcerebralʼ sanctuary iconography. Our two alternative solutions to this absence both include an Anastasis, either as a free hanging icon (Nordhagen), or as a motif included in the vast Adoration scene on the triumphal arch, here located below the Crucifixion on the steep Cliff of Golgotha (Folgerø)

Sjølvmord, smitte og 13 Reasons Why

    No full text
There was an unusually high number of suicides and suicide attempts in Trondheim and Lillehammer in 2017. In Trondheim municipality the increased activity in suicidal behavior seemed to be connected to the series 13 Reasons Why. Suicide is a topic that brings about strong feelings, and worries about clusters are common following the suicide of an adolescent. This article is a non-systematic literature review that seeks to shed some light on suicide clusters. Using the literature, I will attempt to answer the question «Are there characteristics of the TV-series 13 Reasons Why that could potentially promote suicidal behavior in adolescents?» The article will also suggest tools that can be used in the prevention of clusters, and some interventions.

Waugh’s Work Suspended and Other Stories and The Loved One in Spain

    No full text
Evelyn Waugh’s works were translated in many languages and studied by scholars and journalists from numerous countries. In Spain, Waugh’s almost entire oeuvre was translated after the Francoist dictatorship. This article analyses the reception of two of Waugh’s novels ― Work Suspended and Other Stories and The Love One― during and after the Francoist regime. In order to undertake this research, the censorship files guarded at the General Archive of the Administration in Alcalá de Henares were consulted as well as the monographs and newspaper articles produced during and after the totalitarian regime. These documents prove that during Franco’s period only one novel passed successfully through the censorship department, and the other one was studied mainly after the Francoist regime
