A research report on the caregiving pressures and social support of older carers in Jiangmen city
Digital punishment : privacy, stigma, and the consequences of data-driven criminal justice
The proliferation of data-driven criminal justice operations has created millions of criminal records each year in the United States. Documenting everything from a police stop to a prison sentence, these records take on a digital life of their own as they are collected by law enforcement and courts, posted on government websites, re-posted on social media, online news and mugshot galleries, and bought and sold by data brokers. The result is “digital punishment,” where mere suspicion or a brush with the law can have lasting consequences. This presentation will discuss several empirical, mixed methods studies of digital criminal records, with a focus on criminal record accuracy, disclosure, and public policy solutions
https://commons.ln.edu.hk/ccrd_report/1001/thumbnail.jp
Friend or foe? Africans at the door : twentieth century military encounters between the Chinese and various African nationals at the borders of China 1900-1950
The first half of the twentieth century was marked by two World Wars, both of which played a role in the decolonization struggles of the Caribbean, Africa and Asia alongside marked “South-South” military encounters within the frame of imperialism. Men from far-flung parts of Africa interacted with Chinese nationals in various capacities on the very borders of China during a period that witnessed the rise and practice of Marxist-Leninist Socialism. A factor that played into the discourse of decolonisation, independence and models of development in Africa. The narratives of these Africa-China encounters have been largely forgotten by most countries of Africa and by the Peoples Republic of China. This paper seeks to identify through historical research the encounters that China had with people from various parts of the African continent between 1900 and 1950 in Asia. Followed by a brief description on how these encounters were perceived in Africa during that fifty-year period. The paper concludes with a discussion on the subject of memorialisation of these encounters in both China and in the independent African countries that were involved
From training to improving classroom practices: Learning from school improvement program intervention in a mountainous public secondary school in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
This study reports learning from a professional development (PD) session and classroom action research from an English class conducted in the mountainous northern part of Pakistan. The researcher got training from Professional Development Centre North (PDCN) as a member of the Quality Assurance Team and then conducted a five-day workshop for teachers on various general teaching techniques, lesson planning, writing reflections/portfolios and classroom management. After the sessions, the teachers applied these knowledge and skills in their respective classes, and English teachers did action research with the researcher to improve the language skills of grade 7 students for three cycles. Pre- and post-intervention tests, teachers’ reflective diaries, lesson plans, portfolio books and discussions with teachers were sources of data collection. The present study shows that there is a thirst amongst teachers for professional grooming. Also, students gradually benefit from new teaching techniques. This study suggests including various PD models in the school development plan to improve teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge, which will result in improved learning outcomes for students. The sustainability of these initiatives is a challenge due to the lack of proper mechanisms and policies in the government schools of Gilgit-Baltistan. Therefore, there is a need for a school policy for English teachers’ PD at the classroom level to improve teaching practices and students’ learning
The Saath-Saath project : China-India music collaboration
CCRD invites four distinguished Hong Kong-based speakers to share their personal journeys of experimentation with different kinds of musical practice, and to offer insights into ‘practice as research’ in music-making and performance. These diverse forms of practice as research involve voice talking to instrument, instrument reaching out to voice, and musicians being challenged by cultural difference viscerally experienced through language and melody.
In this session, Tejaswini Niranjana (CCRD Director) introduces the Saath-Saath Project, involving a set of cross-cultural collaborations between musicians and scholars across India, Hong Kong, and Chin
Comparison of way Indonesians and international authors use citation style, author stance, and reporting verb in journal articles for the field of applied linguistics and language education
In academic texts such as theses, dissertations, essays, papers, and journal articles, authors need to cite the works of others to support their claims about the importance of their writing. When citing other people\u27s work, the author uses the citation style, verb reporting and the author\u27s stance to include information in their text. However, non-native authors such as Indonesian authors who write in English can use reporting verbs, citation styles, and the stance of certain authors when to cite other works in English texts which may be different from those in English texts by international authors.
The aim of this research is to investigate the comparison of citation styles, author positions and reporting verbs used by Indonesian and international authors. This research is a comparative descriptive study. The object of this research is a research article published in national journals and international journals in the field of applied linguistics and language education in the past 10 years, which consisted of 10 introduction research articles for each journal. The data in this study were taken using a checklist and documentation. It is hoped that through this comparison, it can be seen the differences in the way Indonesian and international authors using reporting verbs, citation styles, and the author stance in journal articles in the field of applied linguistics and language education
