Integrating a liberal arts approach into an undergraduate business programme : lessons from a university in Hong Kong
Get PDFUniversities are under pressure to provide graduates with qualities that will enhance their long-term employability in today’s fast-changing business world. Accordingly, the integration of liberal arts into business education is nowadays becoming increasingly recognised and appreciated. However, doubts remain as to whether business education can ever be compatible with a liberal arts perspective, indeed whether business education should even take place in a liberal arts education institution.
The purpose of this article is to contribute to this debate, and perhaps help lessen these doubts, by presenting a case study showing how a liberal arts based approach has been recently infused into the undergraduate business programme of a university in Hong Kong. We examine the purposes and strategies behind this process, investigate how it unfolded, and, using survey data from academic staff and students concerning their attitudes towards several aspects of liberal arts teaching and learning at the University, consider the extent to which the integration of liberal arts into the programme has been successful. The authors hope that this case will be of use to other institutions planning similar changes in future

Symbolic production in the space of urban village: A case study of the 2019 Guangzhou airport biennale
No full textThe Guangzhou Airport Biennale (2019) was founded against the backdrop of current biennialization of art worlds globally and the renovation of urban villages in China. It served as the inception of the gentrification of Fenghe Village, a hollowing village close to the Baiyun International Airport. Referring to Echigo-Tsumari Art Field (Japan) and Art Wuzhen (China) in terms of the approach of embedding contemporary art in villages and towns, the curators of the Guangzhou Airport Biennale accommodated more than 100 pieces of art in the village space, inside/alongside the old houses, streets, and ponds. This article adopts the frameworks of site specificity as well as biennial as the site of art\u27s symbolic production (Sassatelli 2017), to examine the curation of the Guangzhou Airport Biennale. Via observation, critical discourse analysis, and visual analysis, the article argues that except for a handful of artworks, the alleged conversation with local Cantonese culture was scarcely realized in the art display. It gave way to the reinforcement of symbolic production in the biennials in Asia nowadays, which global stars such as Yayoi Kusama and Olafur Eliasson were invited to upgrade the biennial and worlding the urbanization project
Re(Collecting) exhibitions: Are exhibitions and its histories falling into amnesia?
No full textDo exhibitions fall into amnesia because they are not collected by museums? Is it true that exhibition makers have tended to overlook earlier innovations in curatorial and display practices, assuming that each exhibition marks a new beginning? Unlike artworks that have conventionally been collected by museums and private collections, should exhibitions be similarly collected for research and study with its own autonomous histories? If so, how and what aspects of an exhibition are to be collected and archived? This lecture advances possibilities of how museums can collect exhibitions as materials containing materials, starting by understanding what an exhibition is, and developing methodologies in which to study it, which will enable a systematic way of collecting exhibitions that attends to the range of its materials from its exhibitionary discourse, archival documentation, artworks, as well as its curatorial and display practices. The need to consider the ephemeral nature of the temporary exhibitions, and how artworks are experienced spatially within the exhibition further complicates how exhibitions are documented and collected. This lecture proposes to rethink the practice of art collecting in museums and private collections by expanding into the exhibitionary in our collective effort to remember exhibitions
Hong Kong youngsters pursuing career in the Greater Bay Area : opportunities and challenges
Get PDFIn the past two years, Hong Kong has undergone tremendous changes in its internal and external environments. Under the influence of social movements, Sino-US trade negotiations, pandemic and the global economic downturn, Hong Kong\u27s local economy continues to be sluggish. The number of unemployed continues to rise, and the youth unemployment rate is much higher than that of other age groups. To get out of adversity, the younger generation needs diversified development, and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area might just open up a new path for them.
Based on existing evidence, this study discusses Hong Kong youth’s willingness and views on the development of their careers in the Greater Bay Area, their opportunities and challenges, and especially the obstacles encountered by Hong Kong youth who are interested in finding employment or starting a business in Guangdong Province. Thus, effective, specific and feasible measures would be proposed to eliminate relevant obstacles, so as to provide more choices for the career development of Hong Kong youth
How do alliances grow and conflicts ensure? An experiment on conflict network formation
No full textIn a social network in which friendly and rival bilateral links can be formed, how do alliances between decision-makers form, and what determines whether a conflict will arise? We study a network formation game between ex-ante symmetric players in the laboratory to examine the dynamics of alliance formation and conflict evolution. A peaceful equilibrium yields the greatest social welfare, while a successful bullying attack transfers the victimized player’s resources evenly to the attackers at a cost. Consistently with the theoretical model predictions, peaceful and bullying outcomes are prevalent among the randomly re-matched experimental groups, based on the cost of attack. We further examine the dynamics leading to the final network and find that groups tend to coordinate quickly on a first target for attack, while the first attacker entails a non-negligible risk of successful counter-attack by initiating the coordination. These findings provide insights for understanding social dynamics in group coordination
