Book launch event : Sustaining landscapes : governance and ecology in Chinese visual culture, 960–1368 CE

    No full text
Sustaining Landscapes: Governance and Ecology in Chinese Visual Culture, 960–1368 CE examines ecological thought contested amid the rise of the Chinese landscape genre, tracing its intersections with infrastructure governance, natural resource management, and geospatial knowledge. It traces the pre-industrial notion of “sustainability” in policy debates, legal regulations, and arts. Landscape imagery on paintings, maps, as well as massproduced artifacts such as fans and ceramic pillows documented both appropriate and exploitative use of natural resources, and critiqued social inequity and political turmoil. This book breaks new ground by bringing together research on visual and material culture with analysis of politics and ecology.Wang argues that the Chinese landscape genre embodied a holistic approach to negotiating debates on human-nature interdependence and people-state relationships. It joins the increasing literature on ecocriticism and offers alternative perspectives to address contemporary challenges, ranging from environmental crisis to global governance.

    No full text

Coolness, leisure, and power : the development of Mokanshan summer resort in modern China, 1890–1937

    No full text
The concept of coolness (清涼) embodied fundamentally different bodily and cultural experiences in Chinese and Western traditions. With the introduction of Western-style summer resorts by foreign missionaries in the 1890s, these divergent understandings converged and clashed in new spatial forms. This study examines Mokanshan (莫干山), located in Zhejiang province and recognized as one of the Republican era’s “Four Great Summer Retreats” (民國四大避暑地), as a paradigmatic case of transnational leisure. Initially developed by missionaries as a health-oriented retreat, a transnationally managed enclave, and a nostalgic “overseas home” for expatriates, Mokanshan reflected a hybrid model of modern leisure shaped by foreign institutions. Following the 1911 Revolution, rising nationalist sentiment gave way to escalating contestation over the resort’s control and meaning. Chinese authorities asserted sovereignty through administrative reform, transportation integration, and tourism investment, while local elites pursued symbolic sinicization—challenging Western dominance through landscape transformation and vernacular reinterpretation. Despite the missionaries’ attempts to negotiate their position, Mokanshan was formally nationalized in 1927 under the Nanjing regime. Figures such as Huang Fu (黃郛, 1883–1936) reimagined the site as a space of elite political retreat, fusing Neo-Confucian ideals of self-cultivation with modern notions of leisure and reclusion. By tracing three distinct phases of Mokanshan’s development—missionary management (1890s–1911), transitional contestation (1911–1928), and state administration (1928–1937)— this study argues that summer resorts served as microcosms of China’s modern tourism and leisure transformation. Mokanshan’s evolution from a foreign-dominated resort to a nationalized political retreat demonstrates how globalized leisure practices were neither passively adopted nor uniformly rejected, but rather reconfigured through dynamic negotiations among transnational actors, local elites, and state institutions. As one of China’s earliest and most prominent modern resorts, Mokanshan also offers a critical case to the global study of summer retreats and leisure culture

Development of isoscapes for Hong Kong freshwater streams as a basis for ecological studies

    No full text
Applications of isoscapes in terrestrial and marine ecosystems have grown notably as a tool for studying animal movement. However, isoscapes are rarely used in freshwater ecosystem because current iterations of isoscapes commonly model baseline distributions of bulk stable isotope analysis (SIA) data, which may be inadequate for providing the necessary resolution for fine spatial scale stream environments. This issue could potentially be addressed using compound specific stable isotope analysis, a new method that measures the isotopic composition of individual compounds to provide more comprehensive information than bulk SIA. My study focuses on δ13C of essential amino acids (EAA-δ13C), which is more likely to detect isotopic gradients needed for isoscapes. I tested this novel approach in two Hong Kong streams. First, I constructed traditional isoscapes using bulk-tissue δ13C data, then I constructed isoscapes using EAA-δ13C of four essential amino acids (i.e., valine, leucine, isoleucine, and phenylalanine). I collected leaf litter, fresh leaves, and periphyton samples, covering both autochthonous and allochthonous sources of carbon in streams. Sampling sites ranged between estuaries and headwaters. A total of 82 points were sampled, comprising 47 from San Tau Stream and 35 from Sham Wat Stream. A total of 14 isoscapes were constructed, including 5 bulk δ13C isoscapes and 10 EAA-δ13C isoscapes. Periphyton isoscapes were distinctly different between brackish and freshwater sections of both streams, but no gradual isotopic gradient was observed in the freshwater sections, and no significant changes along the length of the stream were found in the EAA-δ13C isoscapes. In bulk SIA leaf litter isoscapes, patterns differed between the two streams. A slight isotopic gradient was observed in San Tau Stream, while in Sham Wat Stream there was a fluctuating pattern. CSIA approach reduced fluctuating patterns from Sham Wat Stream but did not resolve the inconsistencies between the two streams. Fresh leaf isoscapes were constructed for Sham Wat Stream only. Similar distinct isotopic gradient was observed in both bulk SIA and CSIA fresh leaf isoscapes, showing remarkable difference from leaf litter isoscapes. My results suggest that CSIA approach does not improve upon bulk δ13C isoscapes for periphyton and fresh leaf, but further testing is required to investigate its ability of refining leaf litter isoscapes. Nevertheless, the distinct variation found from periphyton isoscapes may help us to assess the importance between brackish and freshwater regions for species inhabiting between these two regions. Moreover, differences in δ13C values between leaf litters and fresh leaves suggest that fresh leaves might be an unsuitable alternative to leaf litter for constructing isosapes, particularly as leaf litter samples lack spatial certainty

    No full text

    No full text
In the early Tang dynasty, new popular music from Hexi area was introduced to China, called “Hubu Xin Sheng”. As this music was different from the Kucha music which had spread to China earlier, it was also called “Xin Hu Sheng” or “Hu Yin”. Previous scholars usually presume this music was the product of Chinese localization of Kucha music or Xiliang music. However, the structural feature of Hubu Xin Sheng was quite different from Kucha music. According to the record of “Hubu music” in “Tai Chang sibu yue”, which was compiled in the mid-Tang dynasty, Hubu music didn’t use drums, the signal instrument in Kucha music. It only used wind instruments and string instruments. This structural feature is highly similar to the court music of Khosrow II in the Sassanid Dynasty. In the record of Shahnameh by Ferdowsi and Kitab al-Musqi al-Kabir by al-Farabi, Khosrow II commanded court musician Barbad and Nakisa to compose new music. Then merchants active in Persia and Sogdiana spread this new popular music, and finally brought it to China. In 744 A.D., Tang Xuan Zong commanded to perform “Hubu Xin Sheng” with Dao Diao, and Fa Qu in the court. As the result of the stimulation of the popular of Huyin, Chinese musician started to add lyrics to Huyin. In order to match the new music structure, the form of the lyrics changed from neat poem to irregular verse. This new literary genre born in this way is called Ci

Artificial Intelligence and job design : insights from JD-R theory

    No full text
In this keynote, Prof. Bakker will explore the profound implications of generative Al technologies, such as OpenAl\u27s ChatGPT, on job design and their alignment with the Job Demands Resources (JD-R) theory. As Al continues to transform workplaces, it introduces both opportunities and challenges for employees and organizations. Generative Al tools are redefining job roles by automating routine tasks, fostering creativity, and enhancing communication. These innovations affect job demands by reducing repetitive workloads while simultaneously creating new cognitive and social challenges. On the other hand, these technologies also serve as valuable job resources, offering immediate feedback, facilitating problem-solving, and supporting employee engagement. By applying the JD-R framework, we can examine how organizations can strategically balance these demands and resources to maximize employee well-being and performance in an Al driven work environment. The goal is to provide actionable insights into how organizations can harness the potential of Al to redesign jobs in ways that promote employee well-being, sustainability, and growth

Prefrontal cortex responses to game rewards and losses in individuals with internet gaming disorder : insights from fNIRS during mobile gameplay

    No full text
Aims: This study aimed to explore the brain activity characteristics of individuals with Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) during mobile gameplay, focusing on neural responses to positive and negative game events. The findings may enhance our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying IGD. Methods: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was employed to measure hemodynamic responses (HbO/HbR) in the prefrontal cortex of both IGD participants and recreational gaming users (RGU), during solo and multiplayer mobile gameplay. Results: In solo mode, IGD participants exhibited stronger activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dLPFC), frontopolar area (FPA), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) in response to positive events compared to RGU. Negative events led to reduced activation in the FPA among IGD participants. In multiplayer mode, IGD participants displayed lower activation in the dLPFC and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vLPFC), although overall brain response trends to positive and negative events were similar between IGD and RGU. Conclusions: This study suggests that individuals with IGD exhibit heightened sensitivity to rewards and diminished sensitivity to losses, along with potential impairments in the executive control network. These results contribute to a better understanding of the neural mechanisms of IGD and offer insights for developing targeted interventions aimed at addressing abnormal reward and loss processing

Socioemotional traits embedded in the human brain connectome

    No full text
Emotion is a powerful psychological state that can determine how we engage in human interactions, and how we manage our affect is a crucial piece to being successful in the social world. Here, I will discuss recent studies that aimed to uncover the neurocognitive mechanisms of socioemotional information processing using movie-watching neuroimaging techniques. Additionally, I will introduce a series of neuroimaging experiments conducted in our lab that aimed to explain socioemotional traits such as grit, regulatory focus tendencies, and happiness from an affective neuroscience perspective, and discuss their implications for mental health

Balancing the energy equation : the interplay of regulatory and emotional resources in sustaining workforce We/I-being

    No full text
Work energy management is a pivotal strategy for safeguarding employee health within the workplace. The escalating demands of work have resulted in pervasive energy depletion, posing a threat to the sustainable development of the workforce. Yet some fundamental conceptual and theoretical aspects of work energy are still subjects of debate. This study focuses on regulatory and emotional resources, two critical psychological assets that influence immediate work engagement. While both are acknowledged as important, the extent to which they function as distinct forms of work energy is unclear in current literature. We reviewed related articles and proposed some viewpoints on the energy concept system, examining the interplay between personal, emotional, relational, and regulatory energies. Based on this and by drawn on self-depletion theory and the emotion regulation process as a journey theory, we explored a phenomenon where the regulated emotion (which expends regulatory resource) serves to support later emotional work. We thus revealed a way that emotional resource can compensate regulatory resource at task level. This may have interesting implications for thinking about what, why, and when certain things are resources in term of capacity to do work, or can even applied to a more general level
