Recollecting memories of China’s first world’s fair
This paper investigates illustrated magazines and commemorative books as sites of historical narratives and collective memories of exhibiting cultures. It focuses on the 1910 Nanking Industrial Exposition ─ the first and last world\u27s fair held by the Qing dynasty (1644-1912). This large-scale industrial fair was intended to modernize China by promoting industry and commerce, and offering international and provincial pavilions, as well as buildings for artistic, educational, and foreign exhibits. However, the fair has largely been forgotten or devalued in the history of Chinese art and exhibitions in the 20th century. The 1910 Nanking Industrial Exposition referenced the 1903 Osaka Fifth National Industrial Exhibition, but it also reflected the popularity of world\u27s fairs beginning in the late 19th century and the establishment of modern nation-states, as well as the wider production, reproduction, and circulation of press coverage and visual culture. I argue that these visual narratives served as framing devices for recollecting shared experiences of this historic fair through photographs of people, buildings, and events. These visual narratives intervene in our knowledge of world\u27s fairs and industrial fairs, and help to shape collective memory surrounding exhibition culture in the Chinese and Japanese contexts. Special emphasis is placed on the role of visual culture and the public sphere in unifying disparate and competing memories
Advertisement, media bias, political polarisation
When consumers value cognitive consistency between the news they read and policies they support, politicians are induced to make policies that conform to a polarized media landscape which not only depends on user subscription for revenue but also advertisement receipts. Following Guo et. al. (2018), I develop a model to study how the dependency on advertisement revenue affects media bias, political polarisation, and voter preferences. I show that though the equilibrium prices of the two newspapers fall when they depend on advertising receipts, the difference between the equilibrium prices and thus ideological position of a marginal voter remains unchanged, compared to Guo et. Al. (2018). Moreover, the extents of political and media polarisation do not depend on newspapers\u27 dependence on advertisement receipts. I also find that when political parties are not ideologically driven and newspapers have a stronger preference for editorial neutrality, then increase in the public\u27s trust on the newspapers for news consumption leads to increased media and political polarisation
With the method of dividing part of rhymes of Tangyun (唐韻), Gu Yanwu (顧炎武) established the first scientific system of Old Chinese rhyme group. However, because he did not get rid of the influence of the theory of near-rhyme (韻緩説), his ten groups are not proper rhyme groups. Jiang Yong (江永) abandoned the theory of near-rhyme and clarified the definition of rhyme group, which was a development of the study on Old Chinese phonology. However, due to the limitation of Mandarin pronunciation, Jiang’s division of rhyme groups is not perfective. Duan Yucai (段玉裁) broke the boundaries of Mandarin pronunciation, which was another great development of the study on Old Chinese phonology
Effects of management and media disclosures of corporate tax evasion on investor judgments
This study examines investor reactions to disclosures of corporate tax evasion by company management and the media. We were particularly interested in the issue of whether investors value corporate tax compliance from a moral perspective. We conducted an experiment in which we manipulate management disclosure strategies (no disclosure, symbolic disclosure, substantive disclosure) and the presence/absence of media disclosures in a 3 x 2 between-subjects design. Participants provided judgments of a hypothetical company’s short-term and long-term financial prospects and their willingness to maintain their investment in the company.
Media disclosure of tax evasion had a significant effect on all judgments. In addition, for all judgments there was a significant interactive effect of management disclosure strategy and media disclosure. This interaction was driven by the particularly strong negative effects of media disclosure when management made no disclosure of the evasion (the “caught off guard” effect). In contrast, analysis of simple effects indicated that if management proactively discloses instances of tax evasion, subsequent disclosure by the media has no significant effect on investor judgments. We also document that, relative to a control group, management disclosure of facts regarding a tax evasion event (in the absence of media disclosure) significantly reduces investor assessments of the short-term prospects of the company and their willingness to hold the company’s stock. However, management disclosure of facts regarding tax evasion had no significant impact on investor assessments of the company’s long-term prospects. Although recent research on environmental, social and governance disclosures has documented that the specific form of management legitimation strategies (symbolic vs. substantive) has significant impacts on investor judgments, we found no evidence of such effects in our study. Supplemental analysis revealed that the perceived morality of management mediated the effects of media disclosures on investor judgments.
Based on the findings we draw several conclusions. Though corporate management may be tempted to omit disclosure of tax evasion events from the financial statements, they are likely to pay a high price if the evasion is later reported by independent third parties. This appears to reflect investor reactions to management breaches of their expectations regarding moral behavior. In contrast, proactive management disclosure of the facts surrounding tax evasion events attenuates the negative effects of future media disclosures. Management disclosure of facts regarding tax evasion appears to be viewed primarily as a short-term rather than a long-term threat to a company’s prospects. Given knowledge that tax evasion has occurred, investors place little credence in management attempts to legitimize the evasion, even when such legitimation efforts describe detailed and concrete remediation strategies. Finally, investor perceptions of the morality of company management (including management commitment to ethics/integrity and corporate social responsibility) play a key role in their reactions to corporate tax evasion
Consumer vulnerability and behavioral biases
A wealth of evidence shows individuals are biased and firms can often exploit consumers’ behavioral biases in their contract designs. In this paper, we study how vulnerable biased individuals are to their own behavioral biases in market equilibrium, and focus on the role of risk aversion and intertemporal elasticity of substitution (IES). We measure consumer vulnerability by the percentage loss in a consumer’s equilibrium certainty equivalent from a market with non-biased consumers to that with biased ones. We examine several important behavioral biases that have been extensively studied in the literature, including the impact of biased beliefs (either over- or under- confidence) in an insurance market, the impact of present bias and naivete about present bias in a dynamic model of credit contract design, the impact of projection bias about habit formation, and the impact of expectation-based loss aversion on an investor’s portfolio choice. In all four cases, we show that consumer vulnerability to the commonly studied behavioral biases has a non-monotonic relationship with risk aversion or IES. This is in striking contrast to the deviations in the equilibrium allocations from the relational benchmark, which are often monotonic to the risk aversion or IES. We also consider a setting of biased agents with Epstein-Zin preferences to isolate the effect of risk aversion from that of IES
Q&A session on voice, instrument and cultural difference
CCRD invites four distinguished Hong Kong-based speakers to share their personal journeys of experimentation with different kinds of musical practice, and to offer insights into ‘practice as research’ in music-making and performance. These diverse forms of practice as research involve voice talking to instrument, instrument reaching out to voice, and musicians being challenged by cultural difference viscerally experienced through language and melody.
After their presentations, the speakers shared comments and their questions, as well as responded to questions from audiences. The session is moderated by Anjeline de Dios, coordinator of the Cultures of Sound and Music programme of CCRD

Social housing in Hong Kong: From social movement to “new” housing policy?
The Housing poverty in Hong Kong is aggravated due to a shortage of public housing in the past decade. Since 2017, the Pilot Project of Transitional Social Housing called Community Housing Movement is launched by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service with the joint efforts of the Funders, landlords, and NGOs/social enterprises (SEs), supported by the Government to address the issue. The Council plays the role of an intermediary platform in soliciting idle residential properties from corporate and individual owners, and building modular housing on idle lands, and through NGOs/SEs as qualified operators accommodate the needy. The core idea of the Project is not only to meet the housing needs of the grassroots families, but also address their poverty issue including improving citizen’s personal, family and community life through on-site housing service intervention. This model does not only help increase the supply of affordable housing, but also pay a way for a new collaboration between non-profit sector, the government and the private sector in the housing and construction area. Meanwhile, it creates a new imagination of elements of affordable housing for future development.
