Beyond mindset : investigating neural and psychological mechanisms of strategic mindset, growth mindset and feedback learning

    Get PDF
Extensive research has explored the benefits of the growth mindset over the past decades. Recently, researchers have turned their attention to the strategic mindset, a new concept with the potential to positively impact cognitive and behavioural change. While some literature suggests that both mindsets are associated with feedback learning, robust evidence is lacking, and the relationship between the three factors remains unknown. This thesis aims to investigate the neural and psychological mechanisms underlying the strategic mindset, growth mindset, and feedback learning through three distinct studies. In Study 1, utilising a self- and other-rating paradigm, we examined neural and behavioural evidence in college students. The event-related potential (ERP) study (Study 1a, N = 41) revealed a positive correlation between the strategic mindset and the neural indicator of social conflict (i.e., the N400 component). Furthermore, individuals with a strategic mindset exhibited selective responsiveness to supportive social feedback, as evidenced by a correlation between the strategic mindset and the amplitude of the late positive potential (LPP) in response to desirable feedback. The behavioural study (Study 1b, N = 45) further demonstrated that individuals who reported frequent use of a strategic mindset were more likely to update their self-concept based on conflicting opinions presented by others. By differentiating the strategic mindset from the growth mindset, we established that the strategic mindset uniquely contributed to promoting learning from others and adjusting one’s self-concept. These results suggest that individuals with a higher level of strategic mindset are more inclined to learn from social feedback and make appropriate adjustments. In Study 2 (N = 987), following the observation of a correlation between the strategic mindset and feedback processing, we conducted a cross-sectional study among employees to explore the underlying mechanism of the strategic mindset, growth mindset, and active feedback-seeking behaviours. The findings of this study suggest that feedback-seeking behaviours act as a mediator in the relationship between the strategic mindset and the growth mindset. In Study 3 (N = 185), leveraging the insights from Studies 1 and 2, we designed a one-week feedback-based mindset training program for working adults, incorporating the principles of strategic mindset and feedback learning. The results of the randomised controlled trials revealed that the intervention successfully enhanced employees’ growth mindset and yielded positive impact on various work-related outcomes, including work engagement, job performance and job satisfaction. Collectively, through the utilisation of ERP, survey, and field experimental study methods, this thesis reveals that feedback learning serves as a mediator, providing insights into the underlying mechanism of the relationship between the strategic mindset and the growth mindset. Furthermore, the feedback-based intervention successfully enhances the growth mindset of intelligence among working adults, leading to improved work engagement and well-being in the workplace. These findings offer valuable implications for nurturing a growth mindset and strategic mindset within higher educational and organisational settings

Two essays on electric vehicle subsidies and auto industries in China

China’s automobile market is the world’s largest automobile market. In recent decades, the development of China’s automobile market has been closely tied to the policies of the Chinese government. This dissertation explores the impact of two key government policies - China’s auto subsidy policy and China’s joint venture policy - on the Chinese automobile market over the past several years. Chapter 1 investigates the pass-through and distributional effects of electric vehicle (EV) subsidies in China. It evaluates how these effects affect market equilibrium and welfare. Empirical results indicate that EV subsidy pass-through to consumers is more than complete, disproportionately favoring high-income individuals. Additionally, Chapter 1 introduces an equitable subsidy model that prioritizes innovation while being progressive in the sense that it redistributes resources toward low-income households. A surprising finding is that this alternative scheme reduces consumer surplus, as producers exploit its progressive structure, transferring gains. Despite enhancing EV adoption and welfare (excluding externalities), the progressive design of subsidies transfers consumer surplus to producers. Chapter 2 explores the impacts of knowledge spillovers instigated by China’s automotive industry policy on cost efficiency. The policy accelerates the sector-wide adoption of advanced technologies and facilitates knowledge transfer both horizontally through labor mobility and vertically via shared suppliers. By analyzing automotive sales data and patent data from 2016 to 2020, Chapter 2 analyzes knowledge spillovers among firms and assesses cost reduction variations through various channels. The finding indicates a significant benefit for companies within the same automotive groups, particularly via horizontal spillovers. Additionally, Chapter 2 employs counterfactual analysis to contrast supplier profits and consumer welfare against the status quo. The results suggest a marked difference in profit losses for indigenous brands, especially fuel vehicles, without spillovers, versus joint ventures

    Get PDF
A core term in traditional Chinese literary theory, wendao is concerned with the philosophical underpinnings of literature and its intellectual and social value. In the pre-Qin period, Xunzi promoted “Honoring the canon and illuminating the Way”, emphasizing the significance of the Confucian canon for understanding the fundamental principles of the world. The Southern Dynasties literary theorist Liu Xie, in his “Origination in the Way” chapter of the Wenxin diaolong, gives the idea that “Literature originates in the Way” an emphatic expression, solidifying an essential linkage between the term’s two components, wen (“literature,” “writing,” “embellishment”) and dao (“the Way”). The Ancient Prose essayists in Tang and Song times and their followers advocated “Literature for the sake of illuminating the Way”, reconfiguring and further developing the relationship between wen and dao. While they promoted the unity and oneness of literary writing and the moral principles and social goals underlying it, the Ancient Prose theorists and practitioners also recognized the creative agency of the writer, making illuminating the Way a self-conscious choice. The Neo-Confucian thinkers of the Song advocated “Literature as a vehicle for conveying the Way”, demonstrating a tendency toward taking literature to be a mere instrument for the Way. In the twentieth century, the suspicion and critique surrounding “Literature as a vehicle for conveying the Way” pushed forward the discussion of the wendao theory as well as its legacy and relevance in the contemporary world

From compulsory motherhood to compulsory contraception : a comparative analysis on \u3ci\u3eThe Handmaid’s Tale\u3c/i\u3e and \u3ci\u3eBrave New World\u3c/i\u3e

In the field of feminist literature, women’s bodily integrity has long been a matter of discussion, especially on the relationship between their reproductive systems and sexuality, where some feminist critics, like Abigail S. Trombley, claim that utilizing contraception can liberate women from oppression. However, the continuation of women’s oppression still exists even after the utilization of contraception and female sexual liberation, including the escalation of the objectification of women’s bodies and the fact that the government and social authorities are the main governors of women’s reproductive systems. Dystopian novels highlight the perpetuation of women’s oppression through the widespread of contraception and the biopolitical measure imposed on women’s reproductive systems. Through the analysis of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932), this paper delves into how the separation of women’s sexuality and reproduction in fact reinforces the oppression of women. Through investigating the specific biopolitical strategies employed in the mentioned dystopias, I argue that the act of divorcing sexuality from reproduction serves as an essential tool for perpetuating and exacerbating women’s oppression, effectively confining them to mere vessels for reproduction and subjecting them to a multitude forms of control and exploitation. By examining the oppression faced by the female characters in The Handmaid’s Tale and Brave New World, this paper reveals how women’s physical autonomy is heavily influenced by biopolitics instead of their own choice
