    No full text

    No full text
Due to the need for offering advice, transmitting teachings, and creating literary works, the ancients often extracted and compiled content from classical texts to keep at hand. This practice led to the formation of a special category of literature in the history of Chinese texts, known as “extracts,” “collected extracts,” or “selected extracts.” Upon closer examination, these texts can be classified into several main types: “Shuolin” and “Chushuo” used by ancient envoys and orators, among which the most famous is recorded in Han Feizi. The “Wei” used for advising and instructing the royal family on the meanings of classic texts is represented by the “Zuo Shi Wei” recorded in Han Zhi. There are also books such as Chuxueji that collect allusions to help princes and others write. Since the Han and Tang Dynasties, the note-taking style has flourished, and the “congchao” (Extracted Compilations) style has produced excellent works in every generation. Yu Yue, a Qing Dynasty writer, has created “Chaxiangshi Congchao”. Among them there are various “Wenchao” (“literary extracts”) and “Shichao” (“historical extracts”). This shows the profound relationship between the ancient people’s daily life needs and the creation of literature. In terms of form, it is divided into excerpts, full transcripts, overviews, etc. From a historical perspective, “cuochao” (extracting) is an important mechanism for the generation of Chinese classics. The corresponding “Extracted Compilations” are an important part of Chinese literature and are of great significance. To further elucidate the above statements, I have written this article and seek guidance and feedback from my academic peers

Intelligent interactive measurement and cultivation system of adolescent psychological resilience

    No full text
Psychological resilience plays a crucial role in helping adolescents cope with adversity and maintain mental well-being. Enhancing resilience is particularly significant for preventing mental health issues. However, traditional methods of fostering psychological resilience often face challenges such as high costs and lengthy timeframes, and there is a lack of scalable, digital, and efficient approaches. To address this gap, this study integrates positive psychology theory with artificial intelligence technologies, including large language models (LLMs), to explore an intelligent system for measuring and cultivating mental resilience in adolescents through human-computer interaction. By combining mental toughness theory, intervention strategies from positive psychology, natural language processing techniques, and human-computer interaction methods, the study investigates the digital mental resilience needs of adolescents. It proposes a new approach to measuring and cultivating resilience based on intelligent dialogue, develops a prototype web-based system, and preliminarily tests the system\u27s effectiveness through user experiments

Active ageing in Europe and China : a political economy perspective

    No full text
The focus of this lecture is Active Ageing, and particularly the application of the concept in social policy. The lecture begins by examining the relationship between social policy and demography, showing that welfare regimes matter. Then it locates the concept of active ageing within its social scientific context, to clarify the ideas behind it. Then it describes how the concept was adopted and applied by policy makers in Europe – the world’s oldest region. However, because of the combination of neoliberal domination in policy processes and the failure to understand the life course nature of ageing, the application took a very narrow economistic form. The limits of this approach are discussed. Then attention turns to China and the limited steps it has taken so far towards adopting this strategy. Finally, the lecture demonstrates, using recent research evidence, how active ageing could both enhance older people’s lives and those who are ageing, and enable societies East and West to age sustainably

‘Like a fish in the water’ : personal culture-structure fit and subjective well-being

    No full text
This presentation introduces the concept of structural fit—the alignment between individuals’ personal cultural orientations and the broader societal context—and examines its implications for subjective well-being (SWB) across two domains: gender norms and perceptions of democracy. Drawing on data from the joint EVS/WVS 2017–2022 across more than 85 countries, we explore how SWB is influenced by the fit between (1) personal gender norms and public gender norms, (2) personal gender norms and societal gender equality, (3) personal perceptions of democracy and collective societal representations, and (4) personal perceptions and expert evaluations of democratic quality. Across both studies, findings consistently show that cultural congruence between the individual and society is associated with higher SWB, particularly when individuals hold progressive gender views or positive perceptions of democracy in societies that share or support these views. Importantly, this cultural fit effect is stronger than the objective fit with institutional indicators like gender equality or expert democracy scores. However, we also find asymmetries: while alignment with positive collective perceptions enhances well-being, alignment with negative public views does not offer similar benefits. Together, these studies highlight the importance of integrating sociological and psychological perspectives on person–environment fit and provide new insights into how the congruence between personal and public culture contributes to well-being in a global context

    No full text

Regarding Huang Shulin’s The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons with Annotations engraved by Yangsutang in the Qing Dynasty, senior scholars only noticed the difference between the original engraving and the reprinted version. However, judging from the origin of the versions, the Yangsutang edition actually exists in three different forms: the first engraved version, the revised version and the reprinted version. This article examines the source of the original text of the Yangsutang edition and Huang’s revisions, lists in detail the various differences between the revised edition and the first edition, and distinguishes the different types of later reprints; it sorts out the relationship between several popular editions after the Republic of China and the Yangsutang edition, and points out the defects of the original text used in Fan Wenlan’s annotated edition

Culturomics and the concept of harmony between humans and nature

    No full text
Climate change and human sustainability represent major global challenges that require collaborative solutions through interdisciplinary integration of psychology, earth sciences, environmental sciences, computational sciences, anthropology, and more. While culture serves as a vital mechanism for human adaptation to nature, prior cultural research has largely adopted a reductionist perspective, focusing on isolated scales and single-dimensional features. We propose a cross-scale, interdisciplinary research framework of Culturomics to understand and explore culture from a systems science perspective and investigate the link between climate change and the evolution of human culture and civilization. Grounded in the traditional Chinese philosophy of harmony between humans and nature (天人合一), our research integrates agent-based modeling, historical ethnographic analysis, cross-cultural assessments, psychological and behavioral experiments, and neuroimaging techniques. In combination with advanced analytical tools such as large language models and representational similarity analysis, this project aims to reveal how weather variability shapes human cultural values by altering adaptive environmental behaviors, and to uncover the underlying psychological mechanisms, neural substrates, and evolutionary patterns
