Uncertainties in climate change prediction and modelling
As models become increasingly complex and integrated, uncertainty among model parameters, variables and processes become critical for evaluating model outcomes and predictions. A framework for understanding uncertainty in climate modelling has been developed by the IPCC and EEA which provides a framework for discussion of uncertainty in models in general. Here we report on a review of this framework along with the results of a survey of sources of uncertainty in livestock and grassland models. Along with the identification of key sources of uncertainty in livestock and grassland modelling, the survey highlighted the need for a development of a common typology for uncertainty. When collaborating across traditionally separate research fields, or when communicating with stakeholders, differences in understanding, interpretation or emphasis can cause confusion. Further work in MACSUR should focus on improving model intercomparison methods to better understand model uncertainties, and improve availability of high quality datasets which can reduce model uncertainties
Data classification and criteria catalogue for data requirements
Data requirements for calibration and validation of agro-ecosystem models were elaborated and a classification scheme for the suitability of experimental data for model testing and improvement has been developed. The scheme enables to evaluate datasets and to classify datasets upon their quality to be used in crop modelling
Factsheets of the models
The exploration of adaptation and mitigation measures in the context of global challenges like climate change, food security and expected demographic boom is an field of research of growing importance. Over the last decades many research groups have been developing economic-trade models to analyse consequences on farm welfare, market supply and trade, some of them also address food security and other global concerns. There are many different ways to tackle these issues and the specific advantages and limitations of alternative modelling strategies are not yet well understood. The objective of the WP1 T1.1 task within TradeM theme of MACSUR is to use the results of a survey on trade and economic models of MACSUR Consortium partners to show which topics are currently addressed in the different models, which methods are used and how well these tools are prepared for an integration with other models like climate, crop and livestock models. Identification of datasets on climate change in relation to livestock productivity (production and fitness traits) and livestock infectious disease
Datasets from Germany and the United Kingdom containing information on geographic (European Union 27 countries), climatic, meteorological, host and infectious agents’ parameters (figure 2) have been completed and are now available for preliminary analysis relating to data quality and consistency. Data set information will continue to be added over the next 12 months
Background information on Shared Socioeconomic Pathways for use in MACSUR case studies
This document is intended to aid in the development of regional Representative Agricultural Pathways in Europe for use in MACSUR case studies, especially the regional pilot studies. We present overviews of existing characterisations of RCPs, SSPs, SPAs, RAPs and more detailed descriptions of the scenarios and assumptions relevant for MACSUR
Development of a common set of methods and protocols for assessing and communicating uncertainties
This reports sets out an outline approach to create definitions of uncertainty and how it might be classified. This is not a prescriptive approach rather it should be seen as a starting point from which further development can be made by consensus with CropM partners and across MACSUR Themes. We propose both a numerical quantification of uncertainty and text based classification scheme. The rational is to be able to both establish the terms and definitions in quantifying the impact of uncertainty on model estimates and have a scheme to enable identification of connectivity between types and sources of uncertainty. The aim is to establish a common set of terms and structure within which they operate that can be used to guide work within CropM.
Guidelines on extending on-going experiments with additional measurements to support crop modelling – Field experimental protocol
The input data necessary for crop model simulations and data for their calibration/validation (and thus requirements for observations and measurements in suitable experiments) are listed. A list of possible seasonal observations/measurements that could be carried out in existing experiments to increase their potential for crop modelling studies is also provided. The general methodology suitable to be used is outlined, but in all cases the selected method depends strongly on the experimental set-up and facilities/instruments at the disposal of the experimentalists. Such methodologies needs to be documented and preferably benchmarked against standard methods.
Identified grassland-livestock production systems and related models
This report describes grassland-livestock production systems, as selected for model-basedstudies. A list of grassland models was identified for evaluation against such datasets(WP2) and application at reference farm (WP3) and regions (WP4) across Europe and peri-European countries
