Variables Influencing Success and Failure For Adults During Dieting

    No full text
Poor diets are the leading risk factor for chronic disease in the USA. About 30% of adults in the US are considered obese, and around 25% of children under age 20 are considered obese or very obese. Psychological factors significantly and complexly influence people’s adherence to healthy dietary behaviors such as overeating and eating unhealthy food. Research suggests healthy foods such as fresh fruits, greens, and protein are often harder to access, more expensive, and of lower quality in rural/remote or low-income/high-minority areas, which compounds the struggles with obesity. Americans spend an estimated $33 billion each year on weight loss products and diets. Little is known about the psychological variables that influence successful dieting and weight loss that lasts. Little is known about which diets are the most effective, produce feelings of satisfaction, and have the highest levels of adherence. Additionally, variables that contribute to failure in dieting are not well-researched. We are conducting a literature review on which psychological variables lead persons to succeed with weight loss and diet adherence versus failure. Using the PRISMA technique for this literature review examining research findings o

Spinal cord stimulation and differential target multiplexed programming

    No full text
Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a treatment for people who suffer chronic pain conditions, such as chronic back pain. SCS involves implanting an electrode directly into the spinal cord to send electrical impulses. This treatment has proven to be clinically effective for people who have been suffering with pain. However, the continuous use of (SCS) has shown some issues such as faster battery depletion which could ultimately decrease the efficacy of the SCS treatment. In this research, we are testing an alternate method using two differential target multiplexed programming (DTMP) models to determine whether the new methodology is 1) as efficacious and 2) works via a different biological mechanism than the continuous low-rate SCS treatment. DTMP treatments significantly decreased mechanical hypersensitivity in the SNI animal model of neuropathic pain, with the DTMP models having a significantly higher efficacy in pain reduction in comparison to continuous low-rate SCS. In addition, the DTMP models modulate different genes than the continuous low-rate SCS treatment, indicating that DTMP works by a different biological mechanism

Drivers of Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has played a crucial role in driving economic growth across Latin America, yet the determinants influencing FDI inflows in the region remain contested. This research examines the effect of macroeconomic and institutional individual factors on FDI, employing a Dynamic Panel Vector Autoregressive (PVAR) model with the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). Our findings reveal significant temporal variations in the determinants of FDI over time. Political stability was a decisive factor during 2002–2008, reflecting investor preference for predictable institutional environments amid favorable economic conditions. The 2009–2015 period showed weakened relationships between FDI and its determinants, potentially due to the global financial crisis. Finally, the 2016–2022 period saw inflation emerge as a dominant negative factor, underscoring the growing importance of macroeconomic stability amidst modern economic challenges. The study provides valuable insights into the evolving dynamics of FDI determinants, contributing to academic discourse and policymakers in Latin America
