    MAP Indonesia: Beyond Tradition module

    Lenong, a traditional Betawi art form dating back to the early 20th century, is more than just entertainment. As a folk theatre, it also serves as an educational tool for the community. Lenong Preman, a specific type of Lenong, stands out for its interactive nature, fostering two-way communication between performers and audience. This element of communication then becomes one of Lenong’s strengths, which was explored in the Beyond Tradition project in Indonesia, particularly in creating a space for dialogue to address social issues that exist in everyday life.The Beyond Tradition Module: Revitalizing Lenong as a Model for Teaching Betawi Arts was developed from the learning model. The module aims to contribute to the Emancipated Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka), which focuses on project-based learning, while also addressing the needs of the DKI Jakarta government to preserve Betawi culture.This module were developed jointly between artists from various institutions, namely the Center for Family Resilience and Development (PKPK), Faculty of Psychology, Unika Atma Jaya, Padepokan Ciliwung Condet (PCC), Mr. Jose Rizal Manua (theatre), Sanggar Purnama (rhyme), Studio Ruang Condet (Lenong), Gitarda Studio (Gambang Kromong), Jelantika Nusantara (Betawi dance), Sanggar Si Khodrat (playing beats), Deprok Pencak Silat College (playing hits) and Super 8MM Foundation (photos, videos and films).     Study of Betalains Compound, Sugars, and Moisture Content on Pablo Beetroot Root Size from the UK and Spain

    Background: Beetroot is a vital root vegetable with health-promoting benefits. However, the sugar composition, moisture content, and betalains compound in relation to root sizes have yet to be fully understood. Main Aim: This study aims to investigate the influence of root size compositions (with an emphasis on moisture content (MC), betalains, and sugar content (SC)) of Pablo beetroot (PB) sourced from the United Kingdom (UK) and Spain. Materials and Methods: MC was determined using convective fan oven drying (FOD), vacuum oven drying (VOD), halogen moisture analyser (HMA), and a volumetric Karl Fischer titration (VKFT) method. The samples were dried in the FOD at 103°C, VOD at 70°C, 100 mmHg for 1- 24 h, and HMA at 50-160°C for 2.0-27.6 mins. VKFT moisture content was determined using solid beetroot and methanolic extracts. Betalains were determined spectrophotometrically. Blending extraction techniques and treatments such as solvents, pH, ascorbic acids, ultrasonicated water, storage temperatures, different beetroot sizes, and parts were investigated to determine the yield and concentration of betalains. The impact of root sizes and oven drying temperatures (50, 70, and 103°C) on beetroot sugar content was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography and a refractive index detector (HPLC-RID) and compared with total soluble solids by refractometer. Main Findings: The results of the MC of retail PB UK determined by FOD ranged between 84.6 and 86.5% wwb, VOD ranged between 82.4 and 85.5% wwb, and HMA ranged between 1.54- 85.14% wwb. VKFT has a MC of 85.7% wwb. The MC of retail PB Spain and supplier PB UK was significantly higher (PConclusions: The study shows that the root sizes of PB sourced from the UK and Spain were observed to have variations in the MC, BE, and SC. Therefore, root sizes are a crucial factor in beetroot composition. This suggests there is scope to investigate the impact of beetroot size on other beetroot bioactive compounds.</p

    Face matching as a majority: Getting the best from a crowd

    For unfamiliar faces, deciding whether two photographs depict the same person or not can be difficult. One way to substantially improve accuracy is to defer to the ‘wisdom of crowds’ by aggregating responses across multiple individuals. However, there are several methods available for doing this. Here, we investigated performance in three tests of unfamiliar face matching. In all cases, we found that going with the option chosen by the majority of people provided the best approach. No benefit was found by weighting an option's popularity using average confidence, while choosing the ‘surprisingly popular’ option resulted in a sizeable decrease in accuracy. Therefore, rather than incorporating metacognitive judgements, we endorse a simple majority vote for this particular task.</p

    Quantifying Sahel Runoff Sensitivity to Climate Variability, Soil Moisture and Vegetation Changes Using Analytical Methods

     Whilst substantial eforts have been deployed to understand the “Sahel hydrological paradox”, most of the studies focused on small experimental watersheds around the central and western Sahel. To our knowledge, there is no study on this issue covering all the watersheds located within the Sahelian belt. The absence of relevant studies may be attributed to a sparsity of in situ data leading to a dearth of knowledge on the Sahel hydrology. To fll this knowledge gap, the present study leverages analytical methods and freely available geospatial datasets to understand the efects of climatic factors, soil moisture and vegetation cover changes on surface runof in 45 watersheds located within the Sahelian belt over two decades (2000–2021). Analyses show increasing trends in annual precipitation and potential evapotranspiration (PET) in more than 80% of the watersheds. Surface runof, soil moisture (SM), and vegetation cover measured using the normalised diference vegetation index (NDVI) also show increasing trends in all the watersheds. Multivariable linear regression (MLR) analyses reveal that precipitation, PET, SM, and NDVI contribute about 62% of surface runof variance. Further analyses using MLR, and the partial least squares regression (PLSR) show that precipitation and NDVI are the main factors infuencing surface runof in the Sahel. Elasticity coefcients reveal that a 10% increase in precipitation, SM and NDVI may lead to about 22%, 26% and 45% increase in surface runof respectively. In contrast, a 10% increase in PET may lead to a 61% decline in surface runof in the Sahel. This is the frst hydrological study covering all the watersheds located within the Sahelian belt with results showing that surface runof is infuenced by climate, SM and NDVI to varying degrees. Given the unique hydrological characteristics of the Sahel, a better understanding of the diferent factors infuencing surface runof may be crucial for enhancing climate adaptation and ecological restoration eforts in the region such as the Great Green Wall Initiative. </p

    Environmental Stewardship Education in Tuvalu, Part 1: The Role of Policy Alignment

    Environmental stewardship is crucial for fostering sustainable development, particularly in vulnerable small-island developing states like Tuvalu. Government policies and frameworks play a vital role in shaping the education system, but inconsistencies in policy alignment often hamper efforts to embed Environmental Stewardship Education (ESE) into the national curriculum. We aimed to answer four questions: 1. What formal policies shape Environmental Stewardship Education (ESE) in Tuvalu? 2. Are national educational and environmental policies mutually consistent? 3. Are these national policies consistent with regional and global policies? 4. What challenges hinder the implementation of ESE in Tuvalu? These questions were addressed using a study of regional, international, and Tuvaluan online-available documentary assessments of national policies and frameworks in conjunction with those obtained from the Education Department. Our findings revealed that a combination of Tuvalu’s environmental and educational policies was instrumental in shaping ESE. Nationally, educational and environmental policies are internally inconsistent, as well as being inconsistent externally with regional and international policies. Recommendations for improving policy alignment and the sustainable integration of ESE into the curriculum are provided. The second part (Part 2) of our review covers the development and delivery of effective curricula for ESE.</p

    Enhanced oxidative bioleaching for nickel and metal recovery from arsenic ores moves toward efficient and sustainable extraction

      This study investigates the application of oxidative bioleaching for the recovery of nickel and other valuable metals from arsenic-rich ores, employing mixed bacterial cultures under controlled pulp density conditions. The research utilised mesophilic and moderately thermophilic bacteria to bioleach nickel from low- and high-grade arsenic-bearing ores, achieving dissolution rates exceeding 99% for nickel in optimal conditions. Comparisons with abiotic and chemical leaching demonstrated significantly lower efficiencies, underscoring the advantages of bioleaching. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the formation of secondary scorodite, arising from arsenic solubilization in the presence of iron, while kinetic modelling highlighted the mixed reaction mechanisms influencing dissolution rates in low-grade ores. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the bioleaching process, offering insights into its scalability and sustainability for nickel, cobalt, and copper recovery from arsenic-bearing ores, paving the way for more efficient and environmentally friendly extraction technologies.</p

    AbstractThe socio-political climate in the UK, compounded by government austerity measures, has intensified the cost-of-living crisis, significantly impacting the affordability of the food supply chain. This has led to an increasing disconnect from healthy dietary practices and has contributed to declines in mental and physical wellbeing. This paper examines the role of edible city (EC) initiatives in addressing these challenges by enhancing food security, fostering social resilience and supporting community wellbeing. The aim of this research is to understand the tangible links between EC mechanisms and how they align with local, cultural and geographical perspectives. Focusing on the City of Lincoln, UK, this study aims to develop a contextualised EC framework that is culturally and geographically relevant and aligns with global goals for sustainable urban development as outlined in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG11), promoting inclusive, environmentally safe and economically viable communities. Utilising a mixed methods approach, this research combines qualitative interviews and a critical cross-case analysis of four community growing groups in the UK, alongside quantitative socio-demographic data analysis. The findings reveal that successful EC initiatives adapt to their environment and socio-cultural conditions and highlight the importance of EC diversification for long-term sustainability. Four core themes emerged across the case studies: (1) social prescribing, (2) social capital (3) knowledge sharing and (4) social value. These findings inform the creation of a novel flexible EC framework, Lincoln, providing actionable insights and policy recommendations to support sustainable urban regeneration and enhance community resilience. This research contributes transferable knowledge to inform EC strategies across diverse global urban contexts, promoting a pathway toward resilient and socially cohesive urban environments.</p

    A qualitative exploration of sport and exercise psychology practitioners’ perceptions and experiences of using Think Aloud in applied practice

    Aims: Think aloud (TA) is a tool that has been used within sport and exercise psychology research and applied contexts to understand participants’ cognitions. We aimed to explore ASEPs’ perceptions of using TA within their applied practice. Method: Following a workshop on TA, 10 ASEPs engaged in semi-structured interviews about their experiences of using TA with clients. Data were analysed via content analysis. Results: TA was used as part of the needs analysis process, and to facilitate reflection and evaluation. Considerations were highlighted: client factors (e.g., individual differences); consulting factors (i.e., teaching participants how to TA); and the client-consultant relationship (i.e., strength of the working alliance). Conclusion: This is the first study to consider ASEPs perspectives on how TA can be used within applied practice and offers considerations to ASEP’s on the use of TA as a tool within service delivery.</p
