The Future of Fall Prevention: Integrating OpenPose with Cutting-Edge ML Models
The research paper aims to assess ML models for video-recorded gaits with an aim of classifying people into high or low risks to fall groups. Several Machine learning (ML) algorithms were tried employing OpenPose for Computer vision (CV), with Random forest (RF) showing the best outcomes: 93% accuracy along with F1-score as well as balanced sensitivity (93.50%) as well as specificity (92.50%). Some important determining factors were speed per unit distance,, angle among other statistical measures. In comparison to wearables-based DL approaches plus traditional fall detection methods, this study’s approach showed higher accuracy and adaptability within health care settings. </p
Costruire in immagini: archetipi biblici e la quotidianità del lavoro nel medioevo
This article explores the theme of labour, focusing on the medieval representation of the biblical episodes of the construction of Noah’s Ark and the Tower of Babel. Although briefly mentioned in the Vulgate, these episodes were expanded and elaborated in visual representations. Setting aside the complex debates on the Cotton Genesis and its transmissions, the article highlights how the visual construction of these episodes developed in parallel to, or even independently of, textual exegesis. These scenes, it will be argued, not only offer representations of contemporary labour, but they construct, in a game of mirrors, a visual dialogue between biblical archetypes and medieval workers.</p
Gamification Strategy in E-commerce Retail: A Bibliometric Analysis of International Research Trends and Avenues Ahead
Technological advancements have reshaped business-customer interactions, with gamification emerging as a key global marketing trend in 2023 and have been increasingly popular due to the increased adoption of internet-enabled smartphones, especially among younger generations who have advanced digital skills and gaming expertise. Despite this, research on gamification remains fragmented. The review identified critical research themes, highlight prolific authors, and synthesize current literature on new developments in gamification. A bibliometric analysis of 1,399 papers, selected from a database of 28,457 publications retrieved from Web of Science and Scopus, was conducted using VOSviewer software and the Bibliometrix package in R. The review yielded a thematic map that pinpoints the emerging research areas in e-commerce, emphasizing the substantial influence of gamified marketing strategies on business success and delineates prospective avenues for further research in this ever-evolving subject. Recognizing key authors, publications, and publishers highlights the intellectual landscape of gamification research and its scholarly networks. Unlike other review articles that focus on descriptive and informative details, this study presents thematic map analysis to statistically identify well-studied areas and those requiring further investigation. While most previous review articles rely on a single database, a major contribution of this paper is the synthesis of data from the two largest academic databases into a comprehensive review, making this integration a more reliable foundation for future research.</p
Rethinking assessment and teaching in response to generative artificial intelligence: Unpacking the impact of technology-mediated team-based learning
Background and Purpose: This study explores the implementation of Team-Based Learning (TBL) within a clinical reasoning module at a medical school. The objective is to assess the impact of TBL on student learning experiences and address the potential to mitigate assessment challenges heightened by Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) advancements.Methodology: The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Data were collected through surveys from students (n=31) who took a Clinical Reasoning module at a medical school. The university where the study was conducted is an international institution, hosting students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, including representation from the Asian continent. The Learning Activity Management System (LAMS) was used for module delivery. A thematic analysis was performed on the qualitative data, and descriptive statistics were applied to the quantitative data.Findings: Findings indicate that TBL significantly enhances the learning experience by promoting active engagement, collaborative learning, and the development of critical thinking skills among medical students. Students reported positive experiences with teamwork, peer evaluation, and the structured nature of TBL sessions. The study also highlighted the role of TBL in maintaining assessment integrity amidst the rise of GAI tools like ChatGPT.Contributions: TBL presents a viable framework for enhancing student engagement and maintaining the authenticity of assessments in an era increasingly dominated by Generative AI. The study advocates for the thoughtful integration of TBL in education, emphasising its potential to foster a deeper understanding of the subject matter and address evolving challenges in academic assessments.</p
EdgeScan for IoT Contextual Understanding with Edge Computing and Image Captioning
The emergence of Edge Computing has shifted the processing capabilities in proximity to the Internet of Things data sources, offering solutions to latency and bandwidth constraints applications. This shift complements Cloud Computing, especially in handling real-time data processing and enhancing processing. Image processing, particularly image captioning for
smart monitoring systems, benefits greatly from this synergy. Image captioning plays a crucial role in understanding visual data. While early methods excelled in encoder-decoder frameworks and attention mechanisms, they often overlooked semantic representations which are essential for comprehensive image understanding. To address this gap, we introduce the EdgeScan framework, leveraging Edge Computing for image analysis and semantic feature extractions closer to data sources. EdgeScan integrates visual and semantic features to create more informative and enriched image captions that enhance image captioning accuracy. The EdgeScan image captioning model architecture is capable of i) learning the salient image region’s specific feature representation, and ii) co-embedding visual attention and semantic attributes in one space for feature fusion. This improves models’ ability to interpret and respond to data in a meaningful way, which is particularly valuable for IoT applications that require a deep understanding of the semantics of diverse and constantly changing data for efficient operation. Extensive experiments were conducted on the MS-COCO dataset to demonstrate the superiority of EdgeScan in both quantitative and qualitative performance, achieving highest CIDEr score of 120.9, as well as notable scores of 78.6 for BLEU@1 and 57.7 for ROUGE metrics, promising advancements in IoT-driven image understanding and competitiveness against the state-of-the-art.</p
If you find me on the floor, stick some sugar in my mouth: The social production (and protection) of insulin risk among IPED communities
IntroductionInsulin is used among image and performance enhancing drug (IPED) communities for its anabolic effects, but its use carries significant risks, with the acute danger being hypoglycaemia, which can be life-threatening if not properly managed. Within these communities, harm reduction practices and informal peer knowledge exchange play a critical role in the way substances are consumed. This qualitative study sought to understand these community practices regarding non-medical insulin use among people who use IPEDs.MethodSemi-structured interviews were conducted with people who use IPEDs, and specifically, insulin. Participants were asked about their risk practices, harm reduction strategies, and the community dynamics that shape their use of insulin. Our analysis centred on how social and material networks of peers, technologies, and information flows contribute to the social production and protection of risk.ResultsThe study involved an international cohort of 14 participants (13 men, 1 woman, aged 25-45, M = 33.34) who used insulin for non-medical purposes. The analysis revealed two themes: Intersecting Risks, which encompassed the physical, psychosocial, and self-imposed risks associated with insulin use, and Social Protection of Risks, focusing on community-driven harm reduction strategies. People who use insulin actively construct risk through community-driven knowledge and informal education. Social protection is facilitated through peer networks, where harm reduction strategies are shared.DiscussionThis research underscores the importance of community-care in harm reduction and challenges individualised models of risk management. It highlights the need for community-centred health interventions that recognise the relational dynamics of risk management among IPED-using communities.</p
Assessing the Prevalence and Drivers of Trichomonas gallinae in UK Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) Populations
Trichomonas gallinae is a pathogenic, protozoan parasite. It can cause lesions in the oral cavity of infected birds, known as trichomonosis, which can prevent the bird from feeding. This can lead to death of the bird by starvation. The parasite has previously been noted in chaffinches (Fringilla coelebs) and greenfinches (Chloris chloris), where it has been linked to their decline. Recently, signs of trichomonosis have been reported in UK hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) populations. The hawfinch is a red listed bird in the UK, isolated to a few strongholds. The reason for its decline is unclear, however it has been suggested to be due to declining habitat and predation. It is not yet known how much of an effect T. gallinae could have on these populations or what drives the cases. To our knowledge, no study has yet to looked at subclinical cases of T. gallinae in hawfinches, but it has been confirmed in some by post-mortem analysis. The first chapter looked at the prevalence of T. gallinae in 3 populations of hawfinches in the UK, testing whether any biological covariates and study sites were linked to the presence of T. gallinae. This involved sampling hawfinches (both live and dissected) and using PCR to look for positive cases of T. gallinae along with any specific strains. 83 hawfinches were sampled, and 5 hawfinches were dissected. Of the live samples, 32 were positive for T. gallinae. No bird sampled showed signs of trichomonosis, suggesting that these infections were sub-clinical. Of these 17 samples were used to create a phylogenetic tree based on a primer called ITS and 12 were used to create a phylogenetic tree based on a primer called Fe-hyd. Longer term studies are needed to fully understand the effects of the parasite, but it is suggested that mitigation measures are used such as periodical moving of feed sites to minimise risk while ringing these birds. The second chapter looked at what may be driving cases of T. gallinae in hawfinches, testing whether avian community composition and bird feeder usage could be potential drivers. This used camera trapping and co-occurrence analysis to look at species associations and evaluate if these associations could be driving cases of T. gallinae. An online questionnaire was used to look at bird feeder usage.Hawfinches were associated with chaffinches at both sites that were looked at. As chaffinches are known to contract T. gallinae, this association may be driving cases. Further studies sampling both hawfinches and chaffinches at the same site are needed to fully explore if there is a link. No factor was significant in presence of hawfinches in garden. Very few respondents reported hawfinches which could suggest that these birds rarely visit gardens. Most reports of hawfinches in gardens were within 10 km of one of the sampling sites but the response rate was low. Further studies looking specifically at these areas would help confirm if hawfinches are using bird feeders and this should be combined with sampling of these feeders to see if T. gallinae is being spread at them.This study sets a foundation for future work to fully understand T. gallinae in hawfinches.</p
The impact of Peer Study Group on Students’ Performance in ECO1031 Data Analytics for Business
The aim of this paper is to analyse the impact of peer-to-peer support on attainment and confidence at university-level study. Peer Study Group (PSG) project was to have a positive impact on student’s academic performance whilst contributing to the one community spirit at the University of Lincoln. This report focuses on the impact on students’ performance in ECO1031 Data Analytics for Business. Data was collected through questionnaires answered by students who attended and didn’t attend the support session to compare how prepared and confident the two groups were before the assessments. From the feedback we can conclude that there was a positive correlation between students’ performance and attending the support sessions.</p
Polish women's experiences of domestic violence intersecting roles of migration and socio-cultural religious and policy contexts in Poland and in the UK.
Scholarship on domestic violence and abuse has sought to understand how women's experiences are influenced by gender and its intersections with other social relations of power. We draw upon life history interviews with Polish women and interviews with practitioners to contribute to this intersectional and transnational feminist scholarship by examining how intersections between the migration process, immigration status and socio-cultural, religious and institutional contexts of Poland and the UK shape Polish women’s experiences of domestic violence and abuse. In doing so, we seek to redress the invisibilisation of Polish migrant women in the scholarship on domestic violence and abuse in the UK and beyond, in a context where they are invisibilised as ‘white’ and the particularities of their experiences neglected. Beyond a focus on the specificity of Polish women’s experiences through utilising an intersectional lens to understand the difference that difference makes, we also draw attention to similarities in migrant women’s structural location within exclusionary immigration/welfare bordering regimes in the UK, which creates conducive contexts for such violence. In doing so, we widen the lens used to understand domestic violence beyond family and interpersonal dynamics to the opportunities and constraints posed by intersecting social relations and gendered geographies of power. </p
The Werewolf in Medieval Romance
This volume reassesses the use of the werewolf figure in six medieval romances (French, Latin, and Middle English) that date from the twelfth to fourteenth centuries, and carries research of the werewolf into the field of post-humanism through its examination of how medieval authors disperse the identity of the knight across a variety of assemblages that incorporate human and animal bodies, material objects, physical spaces, and political apparatuses, especially sovereign power and feudal structures.</p
