A general analysis of the geographicaldistribution of Mexican oaks (Quercus,Fagaceae), with emphasis in subgeneraErythrobalanus and Lepidobalanus ispresented. A review was made of a number ofworks related to Mexican oaks and ofherbarium specimens, resulting in lists of oakspecies for each state; comparisons of statesusing a similarity index resulted in therecognition of five geographical regionswithin the country. The central region is therichest in species. Few species appear to bewidely distributed, some of these clearlybeing of Mexican-North American, while thelarge number of species are endemic toMexico. White oaks (subg. Lepidobalanus)are more abundant than red oaks (subg.Erythrobalanus) in each state in northernMexico, while red oaks are more abundant inthe south (the southern, western andsoutheastern regions). Detailed data on thedistribution of Quercus in Mexico remainslimited, indicating an important void in theknowledge of this important genus thatimpedes its adequate utilization andmanagement.

Whether the better familial placement of theBrazilian endemic Heteranthia decipiensNees & Mart. Is in Scrophulariaceae orSolanaceae is uncertain. The pollenmorphology of H. decipiens was comparedwith that of several species of Solanaceae(Salpiglossideae): Browallia americana L.,Schwenckia americana Rooy. ex L., S.cruviflora Benth. and S. grandiflora Benth.Pollen grains underwent acetolysis and wereanalysed under light (LM) and scanningelectronic (SEM) microscopy. H. decipiensexhibited small-sized, subprolate, fastigiate 3-colporate pollen grains, the exine psilateunder LM and pilate under SEM. B.americana as characterized by its mediumsized, suboblate, 5(-6)-zonocolpate pollengrains, with the exine striate-microreticulate.The pollen grains of the Schwenckia speciesare small to medium-sized; suboblate toprolate spheroidal, fastigiate 3-colporate withreticulate exine.

A generic-level phytogeographical study of thecloud forest of the Pluma Hidalgo region, animportant area for biodiversity in the SierraMadre del Sur of Oaxaca is presented. Thegeographical and floristic affinities of thisregion with other Mexican cloud forests fromdifferent phytogeographical provinces wereanalyzed at the generic level using Sörensen'ssimilarity index. In terms of genera, the neotropical element wasfound to be the most important (34.4 %)followed by the pantropical (24.8 %). If theelement of wide distribution (15.2 %) isexcluded, the elements following in importanceare: the American (including plants distributedoutside the neotropics, 7.2 %), the AmericanAsiatic (4.8 %), the holartic (4 %), the Mexican(4 %), the American-African (3.2 %) andfinally, those with other distribution patterns(2.4 %).With respect to the floristic similarities of thiscloud forest with others found in Mexico, theresults are surprising, since the Pluma Hidalgoregion was found to be more similar to thecloser cloud forests of Teocelo, Veracruz, thanto the La Chinantla, Oaxaca, or to that found inthe Sierra Madre del Sur of the state ofGuerrero. Perhaps these relationships are aresult of the climatic changes that took placeduring the Tertiary and the Pleistocene.
