Patterns of Igbo Spousal Names
Get PDFSpousal names are integral aspects of Igbo culture and society. Igbo spousal names usually describe the character or nature of the bearer and are closely linked to the person and the state of his/her marriage. This paper focuses on a critical examination of how Igbo spousal names reflect the social values in Igbo society and how they make statements about the bearer, the givers of such names, and their family situations. It examines the impacts of the names and how they could be employed as tools for sustaining marriage institution in Igbo society. The paper discusses the Igbo pattern of spousal naming, their social relevance, and implications in the society. It takes a critical look at contemporary spousal naming pattern in Igbo land and corroborates existing notions that names are not just labels but fundamentals in the reflection, revelation, signification and sustenance of certain social values among the Igbo people. The paper concludes by suggesting parameters that could be used in designating spousal names in Igbo society
Vowel Sequence and Phonemic Status of /h/ and /ŋ/ in Ígálà
No full textStudies in formal linguistics over the past one decade have not only shown that phonotactic constraints are universal, but that parametric variations abound cross-linguistically, hence the need for language specific investigations. This study investigates vowel sequence and the phonemic status of /h/ and /ŋ/ in Ígálà. It employs three separate wordlists to gather Ígálà words with vowel sequence, glottal fricative /h/ and velar nasal /ŋ/ respectively. The method for elicitation of segments was mainly perceptual. The study reveals that out of all Ígálà consonants, only the velar nasal /ŋ/ occurs in word final position and that the vowel sequence allowed in the language is restricted to /i/ occurring either before or after another vowel. It concludes that /h/ occurs consistently only before /i/ in the language
On the Reality of the Adjectival Category in Edo
Get PDFPrevious works on Edo lexicon did not only recognize the adjectival category as a distinct word class but split it into pure and derived adjectives. This paper reviews relevant existing literature on the Edo adjective and their assumptions against the backdrop of evidence from the analysis of the internal structure of constructs assumed to be adjectives in the language. The paper demonstrates that, contrary to claims in the previous studies, there exists no basic lexical item that expresses the adjectival concept in the language. What obtains is the consistent adaptation of clausal/phrasal or complement constructions by Edo native speaker to express the adjectival concepts employed in nominal modification. A decomposition of the constituent structure of the Edo noun phrase assumed to be computed from a nominal ccommanded by an adjective is in reality an output governed by series of modification processes whose surface realization has before now been misinterpreted as adjectives that qualify Edo nominals
Numerical Solution of Linear Integral and Integro-Differential Equations Using Boubakar Collocation Method
No full textThis paper discusses a new collocation method based on Boubakar approximating polynomial for the solution of first order linear integral and integro-differential equations with initial condition. The integro-differential equations is converted into integral equations and later transformed to system of linear equations using standard collocation method. The linear equation is then solved using matrix inversion method. Three examples are given, numerical solutions show that the method is efficient in handling problems under consideration
Coupled Effects of Surface Inclination and Magnetic Field on Free Convection Heat Transfer of Nanofluid over a Flat Plate in a Porous Medium in the Presence of Thermal Radiation
No full textThe present paper focuses on the impacts of stretching surface inclination, magnetic field and thermal radiation on natural convection heat transfer of nanofluids over a surface in a porous medium. The flow and heat transfer models are solved using multi-step differential transformation method. From the parametric study, the results show that the velocity of the nanofluid increases as the plate inclination increases while the temperature of the nanofluid decreases as the plate inclination increases. Also, the flow velocity of the fluid attains minimum value when the plate assumes horizontal position while it reaches maximum value when the plate is at vertical position. The velocity of the fluid decreases as the magnetic field parameter increases. However, the temperature gradient of the flow increases as the magnetic field parameter increases. The viscous and thermal boundary layers increase with the increase of thermal radiation parameter. The present study will help in the design of flow equipment in various industrial and engineering various applications

Feminine Melancholia in Gloria Naylor’s Mama Day: A Kristevan Perspective
No full textThis paper is an interdisciplinary approach to literary criticism. As the principles of psychoanalysis reveals, many opinions often expressed about some literary works can be interrogated, and in this case, such opinions suggest that social factors exclusively are responsible for the behavioural traits of protagonists of the narrative investigated. Psychoanalytic principles have shown that for a better understanding, works of literature, which portray human actions, should also highlight the influences of unconscious factors on characters’ behaviour. Without this, the critical endeavour is incomplete. This paper investigates Gloria Naylor’s Mama Day with the intention of identifying the behavioural traits in the major protagonists of the narrative that establish them as victims of ‘melancholia’. The paper is a psychoanalytic critical reading of the novel in which Julia Kristeva’s postulations are utilized in determining the presence as well as the motivations for the psychological problems in the female protagonists of the narrative. 
Re-Examination of the Traditional Yoruba Cultural Traditions of Morality and Their Implication for Abundant Life

The paper addresses the pertinent questions, such as what does it mean for the Yoruba people to have abundant life? What are those modes of behaviours that constitute for the Yoruba morality and how and where are those notions derived from? How Yoruba cultural society transmits those patterns of moral behaviours such as: generosity/hospitality, kindness, respect for life, truthfulness and, etc. to individuals as a system of inherited conceptions from generation to generation? How have those conceptions changed in modern times? What role can religion play in informing, coordinating, synthesizing and moderating individuals and the collectives to conform to the culturally perceived moral abundant life? The paper uses anthropological and descriptive phenomenological methods of enquiries to argue that in the modern day Yorùbá world, traditional Yoruba conception of moral virtues would still need to be revisited

This paper examines the music of Innocent “2 Face” Idibia to illustrate common aspects between local elements and the western popular features inherent in his music. These features are provided by the analysis of certain musical concepts in staff notation. Drawing on descriptive and stylistic theory, this article provides an analysis of five songs of the musician. It is precisely this type of perception that is serving as a catalyst to this paper. The man who has never sought the truth or one who thinks that he or she already possesses it never feels upset or disturbed. If the former is deficient in ambition, the latter is lacking in foresight. The essence of philosophy is metaphysical - the metaphysical urge to penetrate reality not the task of changing the world! This paper is an exercise in philosophical inquiry and reflections on the contemporaneous and typical question of relevance of philosophy to society and development in the contemporary world. We show the importance of philosophy to other disciplines and bring out its importance as an intellectual enterprise and show its mutual cross fertilization of ideas as the search for truth, knowledge, reality and value, which are the driving forces behind intellectual inquiry
