Revisiting the Language Factor in Education in Nigeria: The Peculiar Case of Simultaneous Bilinguals and Asymmetric Bilinguals
This article explores language policy implications of the emergence in Nigeria, of children whose language acquisition sequences do not follow the mother-tongues-first order, which current language policy guidelines are based on. Current guidelines (which favour mother tongue education at primary education level), leverage on psycholinguistic and learning advantages of mother tongues education, giving the assumption that children would have developed appreciable mastery of their mother tongues at school age. Using an analytical approach, this article assesses cogent secondary data and posits that children who do not follow the mother-tongue-first order, and instead are simultaneous bilinguals and asymmetric bilinguals, have become significant components of Nigeria’s population. The article highlights the psycholinguistic peculiarities of these emergent groups, pointing out their peculiar learning characteristics, and arguing that they usuallydo not possess the mastery of mother tongue, which makes mother tongue education advantageous. In this regard, the article suggests that official policy on language of education in Nigeria must henceforth accommodate variations according to sociolinguistic peculiarities of different locales. Finally, the article recommends that accurate statistics of language use among Nigerian children is required particularly in urban cosmopolitan areas, as this is an essential precursor to any meaningful update of existing language of instruction policy.

EFFECTS OF JIGSAW-IV INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY ON STUDENTS’ ATTITUDE TOWARDS CO-ORDINATE GEOMETRY
The study is an excerpt of ongoing research that examined the effects of jigsaw-iv instructional strategy on the attitude of students towards co-ordinate geometry. The pre-post-tests non-equivalent quasi-experimental research design was adopted, where the experimental (jigsaw) and control groups received both pre-test and post-test, but the control group was conventionally exposed to the same concept. The purposively sampled respondents were selected from public senior secondary school II in Education District V. A self-developed questionnaire on Students’ Attitude towards Co-ordinate Geometry (SATC) with a Pearson R coefficient of 0.74 was employed. Mean, standard deviation and bar-chart were used to answer the two research questions. The three null hypotheses were tested using the Analysis of Co-Variance (ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. It revealed significant effects of jigsaw-iv strategy on students’ attitude towards coordinate geometry but no significant effects of gender. However, there was a significant interaction effect of treatment and gender in attitude towards coordinate geometry lessons. The study recommended that Mathematics teachers should be mandated by curriculum developers to make appropriate use of Jigsaw-iv strategy in teaching basic concepts in Mathematics, and teachers should endeavour not to be gender-biased with respect to the use of collaborative instructional strategies such as Jigsaw-iv
Fixed point results in uniform spaces via simulation functions
In this paper, by using α-admissible mappings embedded in simulation functions, some fixed point results are proved in the setting of a Hausdorff S-complete uniform space. The resultsobtained generalizes and unifies some known results in the literature.
Positioning Open and Distance Learning Through Marketing Communication: Exploring the Role of Brand Personality
Open and Distance Learning (ODL) has been viewed as being second rate compared to conventional learning methods. However, it appears poised to become a significant route to accessing quality tertiary education in Nigeria considering the massive shortfall of infrastructure to carry out said conventional methods of learning. In order to bring the required turnaround, ODL must be repositioned through improved marketing communication methods. Research has shown Brand Personality to be a useful tool in driving consumption of a wide variety of products. This study thus used established brand personality methodology to investigate the factors of ODL Personality. The study developed and validated a scale for the measurement of ODL Personality with an empirical evidence of its brand personality factors. A survey-based approach was employed and a total of 252 copies of the questionnaire were found useable and acceptable, exploratory factor analysis revealed a four-factor model which was validated using confirmatory factor analysis. Findings showed that ODL had 18 personality traits as well as four factors of brand personality which were - Value-Adding, Innovative, Fulfilment and Convenience. It was recommended among others that managers and operators of destinations in Africa need to position and align their respective ODL Institutions using the four-factor framework to develop strategic marketing communicatio
Undergraduates’ Readiness for Utilizing Cloud Computing for Learning in Nigerian Universities
Cloud computing is one of the newer technological tools users to have access to storage, space, processing and networking resources. However, studies revealed that learners enjoyed numerous benefits of cloud computing for fun; but not on the domain for learning. This study investigated undergraduates’ readiness to utilize cloud computing resources for learning in Nigerian Universities. The study adopted descriptive research design, using quantitative survey method. Two research questions and one hypothesis were answered and tested respectively. The instrument employed was a researcher-designed questionnaire which contained two sections to ascertain Nigerian undergraduates’ readiness for utilizing cloud computing for learning. A total of three hundred and ninety-eight (398) copies of questionnaires were retrieved out of 450 copies that were administered representing 88.44% responses were randomly sampled. Frequency counts, percentages and mean were employed to answer the study’s research questions while the hypothesis was tested using t-test. The findings of the study revealed that majority of undergraduates are ready to utilize cloud computing for learning. However, there was no significant difference between male and female undergraduates’ readiness to utilize cloud computing for learning. The study therefore concluded that undergraduates are ready to utilize cloud computing resources for pedagogical experiences despite perennial challenges encountered on their usage. The study recommended that Nigerian universities should encourage undergraduates to explore inherent benefits of cloud computing in other to improve their learning; irrespective of students’ gender
Teachers’ Perception of the Influence of COVID-19 on the Performance of Senior Secondary School Class Three Students: Inferences for STEM Education in Nigeria
The latest eruption of COVID-19 pandemic in December 2019 has led to the complete lockdown of key conurbations worldwide which occasioned the premature shutting down of schools in conurbations affected. With the surging cases of the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria, it is conjectured that COVID-19 may have an undesirable effect on the performance of senior secondary school class three students in science, technology, and mathematics (STM) subjects in the forthcoming national and regional examinations conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). By drawing on qualitative research method and case study design, the study collected data through electronic interviews conducted with nine STM teachers. Results showed that there are likelihoods of a further drop in the pass rate of senior secondary school class three students in STM subjects in this year’s national and regional examinations if COVID-19 contagion is not curtailed. COVID-19 induced school closure and subsequent adoption of virtual modes of learning mediated through social media platforms, television and radio broadcast has resulted in the loss of quality teaching and learning time coupled with the disruption of the school academic calendar. The study recommended that Nigerian government at all levels should make it a point of duty to distribute iPads and electronic tablets preloaded with e-textbooks to all senior secondary school class three students in the country. This will help to mitigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on students’ academic performance in STM subjects in the forthcoming national and regional examinations
PRE-SERVICE CHEMISTRY TEACHERS’ KNOWLEDGE OF GREEN CHEMISTRY PRINCIPLES AND ATTITUDE AS DETERMINANT OF THEIR BEHAVIOUR TOWARDS ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
The attitude and behaviour of individual towards the environment today would determine how the environment will respond to us in the future. Hence this study sought to examine pre-service chemistry teachers’ knowledge of green chemistry principles and attitude towards environmental sustainability. The research adopted the descriptive survey of the correlation type, and 750 pre-service teachers were randomly selected for the study. A validated questionnaire was distributed to 815 pre-service teachers in six federal Schools comprises of University and Colleges of Education in Nigeria with 750 duly filled and returned. Mean, Standard Deviation, Multiple Regression, were used for data analysis. Findings revealed that pre-service teachers in the universities possessed low knowledge of green chemistry principle, it was also discovered that the pre-service teachers had favourable attitude and behavioural intention to act in a manner that promote environmental sustainability. However, it was discovered that the pre-service teacher’s behavioural intention does not translate to their actual behaviour towards the environment. The study found relative significant contributions of knowledge was (ß=.190; t=1.212; p<0.05) and attitude was (ß=.233; t=1.523; p<0.05) to the prediction of pre-service teachers’ behaviour towards promoting environmental sustainability in Nigeria. The study therefore recommended among others that the schools where teachers are trained for the future should restructure their curriculum to incorporate sustainable development concepts that inform the trainee teachers of the significant roles they can play in achieving the sustainable development goals and most importantly promote environmental culture in their classroo

A Discourse on the Nature of Crime and Punishment in the Administration of Social Justice in an African Culture
Ideally, crime connotes violation of a given statute while punishment is the penalty meted out to a criminal to correct the culprit and deter potential offenders. However, the administration of punishment varies from culture to culture. The variation in culture and value in the context of commensurability of a given punishment to the degree of the offence committed has made the administration of crime and punishment cumbersome. While some cultures recognise the need for punishment to be complemented by forgiveness without undermining the delivery of social justice, others do not. This article evaluates the nature of crime and punishment in the administration of social justice from the perspective of an African culture. The paper adopts the critical and prescriptive methodology. It submits that it is important to take an insightful look at the traditional Yoruba conception of crime and punishment given its embedded spirit of forgiveness which appears to run contrary to the dominant contemporary western values. It concludes that such approach, if carefully considered, has the potential of fostering better social ethics in contemporary society
Stagnation-Point Flow of Magneto-Williamson Nanofluid over a Stretching Material with Ohmic Heating and Entropy Analysis
This study communicates stagnation-point flow in magneto-Williamson nanofluid along a convectively heated nonlinear stretchable material in a porous medium. The impacts of Joule heating, thermophoresis together with Brownian motion are also checked in this investigation. In addition, thermodynamic second law is applied to develop entropy generation analysis of crucial parameters with identification of parameters capable of minimizing energy loss in the system. The transport equations are simplified into ordinary differential equations and then integrated numerically using Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg with shooting technique. The effects of the emerging parameters on the dimensionless velocity, temperature, concentration and entropy generation number are publicized through tables and graphs with appropriate discussions. Inthe limiting conditions, the results are found to conform accurately with published studies in the literature. It is found that the viscous drag can be reduced by lowering the magnitude of Weissenberg number, magnetic field and Darcy parameters while heat transfer at the surface improves in the presence of surface convection, temperature ratio and thermal radiation parameters. Besides, the analysis reveals that entropy generation can be minimized by lowering the magnitude of magnetic field, Schmidt number and surface convection parameters. The reduction in these parameters will promote efficient performance of thermal devices. More so, the results obtained in this study can be useful for the construction of appropriate thermal devices for use in energy and electronic devices.
