Folklore in Yorùbá Novels: A Potential Tool for Culture Documentation and Preservation

    No full text
Culture documentation and preservation have become a noticed aspect of cultural sustainability within the ambit of development agenda. Folklore in literary arts plays a unique and undisputable role within cultural sustainability by preserving society’s heritage. In other words, folklore employed in literature, literary arts to be precise, serves as a means of culture documentation and preservation. One common feature of Yorùbá novels is the significant presence of folklore materials. This study interrogates the role of novelists in documenting and preserving Yorùbá culture by employing Functional theory to critically analyse Ìṣọ̀lá’s Ogún Ọmọdé and Òní’s Ojú Rí. The intent is to validate the viability of the novel as a channel for keeping Yorùbá culture alive through the incorporation of folklore materials. The paper argues that more explicit coverage of culture documentation and preservation required not only improves the contributions of writers as agents of culture documentation and preservation, but also presents an increased understanding and appreciation of the value of the writers for their continued survival, individually and collectively. It concludes that employment of folklore in literary arts is a viable way of culture safeguarding  which every writer should imbibe.   &nbsp

A CLASS OF POWER FUNCTION DISTRIBUTIONS: ITS PROPERTIES AND APPLICATIONS

    No full text
The T-R{Y} framework is a method of generating convoluted probability distributions; which has generalized most of the existing methods. In the T-R{Y} framework, three independent distributions, T, R, and Y are combined to form a new distribution, X, where R is the baseline distribution. The new distribution X is a weighted hazard function of the baseline distribution, R. Some distributions like Normal, Weibull, Uniform, Cauchy, and Gamma have been used as baseline distributions. However, the Power function distribution, despite its flexibility and simplicity of its functional form, has not been used as a baseline distribution in the T-R{Y}framework. In this work, we developed the T-Power function{Y} family of distributions using the T-R{Y} framework. We generated twelve convoluted distributions from the family developed, and derived the properties of Gamma-Power function{Log-logistic} distribution (GPLD) as a special case. The maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method is used to estimate the parameters of the proposed distribution. A simulation study and application to two real-life datasets were carried out. The application results shows that the new GPLD perform favourable

Finite Element Analysis of MHD Unsteady Heat and Mass Transfer of Casson Nanofluid Flow over a Vertical Porous Plate Subjected to Thermal Radiation

    No full text
In this present study, finite element method is applied to analyze the magnetohydrodynamic transient heat and masstransfer of Casson nanofluid past an isothermal vertical flat plate embedded in a porous medium under the influence of thermal radiation is studied. The numerical solutions are used to carry out parametric studies. The parametric studies based on the numerical simulation reveal that the temperature as well as the concentration of the fluid increase as the Casson fluid and radiation parameters as well as Prandtl and Schmidt numbers increase. The increase in the Grashof number, radiation, buoyancy ratio and flow medium porosity parameters causes the velocity of the fluid to increase. However, the Casson fluid parameter, buoyancy ratio parameter, the Hartmann (magnetic field parameter), Schmidt and Prandtl numbers decrease as the velocity of the flow increases. The time to reach the steady state concentration, the transient velocity, Nusselt number and the local skin-friction decrease as the buoyancy ratio parameter and Schmidt number increase. Also, the steady-state temperature and velocity decrease as the buoyancy ratio parameter and Schmidt number increase. Also, the local skin friction, Nusselt and Sherwood numbers decrease as the Schmidt number increases. Though, the local Nusselt number increases as the buoyancy ratio parameter increases. It was established that near the leading edge of the plate, the local Nusselt number is not affected by bothbuoyancy ratio parameter and Schmidt number. The study provides better physical insight to the flow problem under the influence of thermal radiation and mass transfer as applied in various engineering processes

Peul’s (Fulani) Worldview as Seen in Bâ’s Work: A Critique

    No full text
Peul and Fulani are synonyms. The Francophone countries know them as Peulh or Fula or Fuldé. They are no fewer than 40 million in the whole of West and Central Africa. They are divided into nine constituents with three basic leading clusters seen in their ruling caste; the academic driven caste – consisting of the marabouts and teachers of the culture – and the pastoral caste consisting mostly of those could be termed as peasants – nomadic and sedentary. By Amadou Hampaté Bâ’s account, they are basically driven in their culture and tradition by the greater search for loftier existential pursuits that culminate in “probity” to face the hereafter. Each constituent acts in consonance with probity for the wholistic wellbeing of the rest to avoid quarrels among the constituents. Given this well-established fact that the Peul are peacefully integrated intra-culturally, why do they find it difficult to extend the integration values to their other African neighbours who are not Peul? This paper aims at identifying the cultural integration constraints in Africa, as social and economic sustainability endeavours fail. Bâ, a Fulani sage, and his works, serve as subjects of the study. The paper critiques Bâ’s thought patterns in the light of what mythocritique theories state as guide for knowing the origins of cultures and traditions as peoples of different cultures meet and seek to integrate in line with globalisation concepts and their constraints. Findings show that Bâ’s thought patterns are quite relevant in understanding the Peul’s worldview which sees probity and constituents’ responsibilities as inalienable with peaceful living; hence a continuous critique of his works is important, if only what they reveal could be made to adapt to current global knowledge process for a review of the Fulani old ways that still remain elastic and amenable to new ways that can lead to progress and friendly multicultural integration

Impression Management and Face Sensitivities in Delta State Courtroom Interactions

    No full text
Participants in courtroom interactions consciously or subconsciously construct identities and impressions that influence the way they are perceived. This study investigates the management of impression and face sensitivity in courtroom interactions in High Court proceedings in Delta State. Within the theoretical framework of Rapport Management Model (Spencer-Oatey), the study examines how impression management mediates legal processes and decisions by highlighting the strategies that courtroom participants employ in creating specific impressions of themselves or others, with the motive of maintaining face concerns. It also identifies the place of cultural norms in the deployment of the strategies and explains how these norms influence judicial proceedings and decisions. Data for this research comprise audio recordings of naturally-occurring speech of participants in the courtroom and personal observations of courtroom interactions in three divisions of the state’s High Courts. It was found that to manage face sensitivities, courtroom interactants created diverse impressions of themselves or others by deploying impression management strategies such as self-promotion, intimidation, apologies, ingratiation and conformity as determined by the peculiarities of legal procedures and cultural norms. In addition to enhancing public perceptions, these strategies mediate judicial proceedings, interpretations and decisions

    No full text
This study investigated the availability and utilization of instructional materials in teaching computer studies in secondary schools in Gwandu metropolis. The poor performance of students recorded for computer studies within Kebbi State was the driving force in carrying out this study. To carry out this investigation, 45 teachers and 3,385 students in three schools from Gwandu metropolis were selected using stratified random sampling technique. Raw score from respondents with other data obtained from a questionnaire and in-depth interview were used for computation. Analysis of the data obtained was analyzed using frequency and percentile interpretation and content analyses. Findings from the computation showed that there are adequate instructional materials where 56.7% of respondents are in agreement that Government should be responsible for the provision of instructional materials to schools while 43.3% have a contrary view. Based on the findings, it is then recommended that government at all levels; Local, State and Federal governments join hands together to enact policies or law encouraging only professionally trained computer science teachers to teach computer studies in secondary schools. The availability of instructional materials should be supported with routine maintenance. Train teachers on the need of improvisation and in addition procure new materials after a period of at least ten (10) years. This would certainly enhance availability and utilization of instructional materials in secondary schools

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate effectiveness and efficiency of different fusion techniques in the analysis and characterization of diseases pattern in medical images. Local features have been combined with global features of images to generate new descriptors or features for efficient characterization and classification of biomedical images. Some of the important research questions that would be specifically addressed in this paper include the following: What are the techniques for feature extractions? How can the fractal dimension be applied to detect different patterns in medical images? Can the combined features from both local and global features provide robust descriptors of shape/textures for the analysis and classification of images? Answers to these research questions would be illustrated with several experiments. Several methods of feature fusion techniques in the analysis of medical images have been suggested and evaluated in different ways. This paper proposes to develop new descriptors using fusion techniques to address some of the limitations of the existing methods in terms of efficiency, speed of image analysis and error corrections. Results analysis and some important implementation aspects of the new descriptors that could be used to improve the overall classification accuracy have been discussed in this paper. The performance measure of different models has been investigated using combined features for further improvement and analysis in the detection and classification of Emphysema patterns
