INFLUENCE OF COOPERATIVE SOCIETIES ON THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS OF ARTISANS IN LAGOS STATE

    No full text
Cooperative society consists of a group of people who have a set of similar interests. It is a non-profit corporation whose goal is to raise the socio-economic standing of its members. The study posited three research questions and hypotheses to guide the research.  This study adopted a descriptive research design. The population of the study comprised 150 artisans in Lagos State. The researcher questionnaire entitled: “The Influence of Cooperative Societies on The Socio-economic Status of Artisans in Lagos State” was used for data collection. The data collected were analyzed using Regression Analysis and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical tools were used to analyze the Hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The result of the analysis shows that there was a significant influence of cooperative societies on the socio-economic status. Hence, it was recommended that cooperative societies should not rest on the positive effects recorded in promoting the socio-economic status of artisans rather they should strengthen it more in such a way that will have an effect on the Lagos State economy especially GDP. The study recommended among others that cooperative societies should integrate more practicable activities that will yield more positive effects of their operations in the promotion of their members' socio-economic status

SOLVING PARTIAL INTEGRO-DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS USING LAPLACE-ADOMIAN DECOMPOSITION METHOD

    No full text
In this paper, the Laplace-Adomian decomposition method (LADM) is applied in obtaining numerical solutions to partial integro-differential equations. In order to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the LADM, the numerical results generated are compared with the variational iteration method and differential transform method. The comparison with the above methods shows that the LADM achieves better accuracy than the others

Writing on Marginal Muslim Figures: The Religious Career of a Community Mu’adhdhin in FESTAC-Town, Lagos, Nigeria

    No full text
Despite its importance in Islam, the Mu’adhdhin’s position has largely been perfunctory. This is often linked to the ambivalent and veiled understanding of their religious roles or duties, particularly among Yoruba Muslims in southwest Nigeria who view them as ‘marginal’ religious figures. This study, therefore, brings to light some of these ‘marginal’ Muslim figures whose works or activities play significant roles in the historical progression of Islam within a religious agency and locality. It similarly addresses the misconceptions among Muslims on the duties and roles of the Mu’adhdhin in a typical Yoruba Muslim community. The paper is based on a fieldwork conducted in FESTAC town in 2017, which draws primarily on evidence from oral sources and readings from secondary sources. Findings show that, beyond his core duty as ‘caller’ of the Muslim compulsory prayers, the Mu’adhdhin commands profound authority and also performs strategic and institutional roles in Islam. The paper concludes that there is a need to accord the Mu’adhdhin due recognition within Yoruba Muslim communities, as dictated by the Sharī’ah

An Optimality Approach to the Study of Syntactically Derived Nominals in Yoruba

    No full text
Most of the existing studies on nominal derivation in Yoruba exclusively employed rule-driven derivational frameworks, such as Government-Binding theory and Minimalist framework. This paper attempts an application of Optimality Theory to the study of nominal derivation in Yoruba, following the assumption that the well-formedness of derived nominals in natural language is ultimately governed by an interaction of conflicting constraints. It examines two categories of syntactically derived nominals: minimal projection and extended projection. Findings show that Yoruba, being a language which subscribes to the head parameter value head-first, ranks the alignment constraint ALIGN-LEFT very high. This is in conjunction with the markedness constraint which requires that every structure or projection is headed (OB-HD). Whereas minimally projected nominals satisfy STAY and NO-LEX-MVT, extendedly projected nominals violate them because the former category of nominals generally does not allow movement

Dialects as Text-Style Markers: Insights from Ifá Oracular Discourse in Ọ̀yọ́-Ìbàdàn and Èkìtì Dialects

    No full text
Ifá is believed to be the foundation of Yoruba culture, one of the major divinities which cuts across all Yoruba speech communities. Despite this pedigree, however, scholarly works on the style of Ifá texts in relation to Yoruba dialects are rare. This study, therefore, examines style markers in Ọ̀yọ́-Ìbàdàn and Èkìtì dialects as evinced from Ifá corpora. Ifa texts available in the Ọ̀yọ́-Ìbàdàn dialect are contrasted with similar texts in Èkìtì dialect for phonological and lexical variations. Findings show that there are variations between the two dialects in the area of tones, words and speech sounds manipulations which serve as markers of style in the two dialects. The shifts however do not result in major semantic variations. The study concludes that dialectal variations serve as style markers of Ifá divination discourse through which Ifá texts can be appropriately described or differentiated

How ‘Good People’ turn ‘Evil’ in Maik Nwosu's "Alpha Song": A Luciferian Analysis

    No full text
This paper seeks to understand through an analysis of Maik Nwosu's Alpha Song how good people turn evil. The paper is predicated on the need to reappraise the basis for the moral judgments that often lead individuals to being labelled as evil. It adopts a Luciferian framework (which engages with the idea of evil, situations that create it and the systems that birth it) for the analysis. The study establishes that self defense in reaction to certain stimuli is an attribute of human existence throughout the living world which is not limited or determined by time, space, culture, religion, sex, and species. It argues that pursuant to the circumstances of its occurrence, these reactions are not always societally acceptable and may often be termed evil. It claims that the transition processes in humans are patterned after a prototype which involves the manipulation of situations and that there is a general link in the wrongs which happen all around. While the centripetal motifs of vices are essentially one, particular situations take on immensities on greater or lesser scales depending on the immediacy of the situation, the exaction of force by the system, and the individual's resistance

Features of Nigerian English as Tools for Humour in Funke Akindele’s Jenifa’s Diary

    No full text
This study examines some characteristics of Nigerian English used as tools for humour in Funke Akindele’s television comedy series  titled ‘Jenifa’s Diary’. Seasons one and two of the series were selected for analysis. The conversations analysed were gathered via downloaded videos of the play. Descriptive linguistic and sociolinguistic methods are used to investigate the phonological, syntactic, and lexico-semantic features of the English language used in the soap opera. The study reveals that features of Nigerian English used as elements of humour in ‘Jenifa’s Diary’ include idioms, proverbs, semantic extension, semantic shift, euphemism, calquing, code-switching, coinages and malapropism. Other features include substitution of consonant sounds, wrong stress placement, lack of word class distinction, inability to distinguish between count and non-count nouns, omission and wrong use of articles, poor knowledge of rules of concord and wrong conjugation of the progressive form in sentence constructions.  The study concludes that the use of English in the Nigerian movie industry is a representation of the way the language is used in the society at large

PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ COMPETENCIES AND USE OF ICT IN MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION

    No full text
A significant criticism of the pre-service teacher education program is that it fails to prepare pre-service teachers to effectively use ICT in the delivery of mathematics instruction in the classroom. Even worse, ICT reforms in Nigeria mainly focus on providing ICT infrastructure and combating other barriers to ICT use rather than creating a blend between pedagogy, content knowledge and ICT competence. Considering this, the study considered student-teachers lived experiences with ICT courses taken in their teacher education program. A mixed-method approach consisting of quantitative and qualitative instruments, including questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, was used to obtain the necessary data to cover all the research questions and objectives, covering 150 pre-service teachers and 165 senior secondary school students using purposive sampling. The study concluded that the benefits of using ICT in the classroom are not conceivable without the pre-service teachers being equipped with ICT competence. Therefore, it was recommended that the teacher education program should furnish its curriculum with courses teaching pre-service teachers how to use the latest ICT innovations in the delivery of mathematics instruction right from their teaching practice

Guests’ Perspective of Hotel Design Quality-A Questionnaire Survey of Hotel Guests in Lagos Metropolis

    No full text
The building is an important part of a hotel offering, whose quality must be improved towards achieving better guests satisfaction. The quality of a building is directly associated with the quality of its architectural design, which is why several studies have established a relationship between hotel design quality, and its guests’ satisfaction. As the possible input resources of hotel design, management and financing are ever limited, it has become necessary to examine design quality itself, in this case in terms of its constituents, and identify which aspects of it mostly impact hotel guests’ satisfaction decision. This paper, therefore, aimed to identify the perspective in which guests assess the design quality of hotels, with the explicit objectives of identifying and grading the extent of the impact of each dimension of design quality on guests’ satisfaction. Employing the philosophical framework of the Design Quality Indicator (DQI) tool with its design quality dimensions, however with the addition of hotel atmospherics aspect obtained from literature, this is a quantitative study, using data obtained from 333 administered questionnaires, spread across sixteen hotels - one from each of the sixteen federal approved local government areas of Lagos metropolis. Design quality was found to be a significant predictor of guests’ satisfaction; and also Hotel Atmospherics, as a dimension of design quality, emerged as the only significant predictor of guests’ satisfaction, as well as having the strongest singular relationship with it amongst other dimensions of design quality

Females on corporate boards and firm financial performance: New evidence from Nigeria

    No full text
The board is the most influential decision-making organ of any modern firm with wide-ranging and high-impact responsibilities from strategy setting, governance, and to the appointment of members to the firm’s top leadership. The size or complexity of many modern firms places a demand on high-level expertise and diversity on corporate boards. A critical dimension of board diversity is gender. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of ‘females on board’ on the financial performance of listed firms in Nigeria. The research intends to show or investigate the impact of female presence on corporate boards on financial performance. The research utilizes the panel study designs while the longitudinal survey study method was used for the collection of data. The research depends on secondary sources of data to collate figures for the variables and embrace the purposive sampling procedure. The ideal population for the research comprises all manufacturing firms registered with the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE). The specimen size for the research was 20 manufacturing firms. The data were collated from secondary sources of the annual report and accounts, fact books, and publications of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). The Hausman test was carried out to ascertain whether to apply Fixed Effects or Random Effects regression. It tested the null proposition to certify that the coefficients predicted by the random effects approximator are one and the same as the coefficients predicted by the unswerving fixed effects approximator. The empirical results suggest that the presence of female directors, as well as their proportion, exerts a favorable impact on financial performance measured by return on assets (ROA). The control factors, business size and company age exert a positive and negative effect on financial performance, respectively. The research proposes that managerial and legislative measures be taken to achieve a healthy gender balance on corporate boards in Nigeria
