Can urban farmers depend on biochar substrate (soilless) for growth and yield of lettuce cultivation?

    No full text
The need to increase food production to meet up with the urban growing population coupled with the limited access to land and soil fertility challenges in Nigeria have called for an alternative agricultural innovation to complement conventional and soil-based food production system. One of such alternatives is the use of Biochar Substrates Hydroponics for cultivation of crops. Whether this innovation could enhance the growth and yield of crop especially at the small-scale level is uncertain. Thus, the paper assesses the response of lettuce to Biochar substrate so as to determine the growth and yield. Experimental research was carried out to establish whether or not there is significant difference between soil based and substrate farming using the same lettuce seed type. Data of plant diameter, width and leave number were collected from lettuce grown in both soil and biochar substrate systems. 3 lettuce plants were randomly selected to measure yield rate. Data collected were analyzed using Design Expert and subjected to a variance test. The result revealed a P-value of = 0.15 indicating no significant growth and yield of the lettuce planted on biochar substrate and soil based in leave production. However, there was significantly difference of yield mass with P-value of 0.038, signifying the biochar substrate-based lettuce was found to be higher than that of the soil-based cultivation. The study concluded that biochar substrate (soil-free) cultivation of lettuce provides weighted or higher massed lettuce than soil-based lettuce cultivation and recommends a larger scale experiment among others to determine if urban farmers can depend on it for increase yield and growth of Lettuce

    No full text
Fabric decoration is the process creating and preparing designs for fabric production. These designs can either be painted or drawn and then manipulated using CAD program which is computer- aided drawing program or created digitally using original art. This study focused on the Adaptation of Sato drum symbols as design for fabric decoration using studio printing technique. The study adopted qualitative research method using practice-led research technique in the textile studio. Five (5) motif designs were created using CorelDraw graphic design suite. CorelDraw graphic suite was used because of its flexibility for colour separation. The materials used are screen printing mesh, textile ink, fabrics, squeegee and exposure unit among others. The study established the possibility of producing a well decorated fabric that can be commercially acceptable and also serve as a means of documentation of our traditional drum.  It was therefore recommended that textile designers should engage in studio production of our traditional motif for fabric decoration. This enhances the production of original traditional fabric print that is readily available to the end user

Student engagement is all about how students feel, act, and think about their experiences in school. It's essential because it helps keep students in school and improves their performance. This study investigated the costs and benefits of getting students engaged in secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. The researchers had two main questions they wanted to answer. 1,200 secondary school students from a total population of 8,746 using a reliable questionnaire. They analysed the data they collected using statistical tools like mean and standard deviation. The results showed that engaging students had some costs, such as increasing the number of students in schools and the money spent by the government and parents on education. But the benefits were valuable, too, like better academic performance, having skilled workers in the country, and reducing disciplinary problems and crime rates. Based on these findings, the study recommended that the government should invest more in schools and provide scholarships to smart but needy students to boost their engagement in school activities

    No full text
This article describes the research activities conducted so far on a project titled; “GLOCALISE”. The main aim of this research is to re-purpose teaching to be learner-centred through inquiry-based, contextualised and learner engaging methods. The general objective is to contextualise learner-centred teaching approaches to Nigeria local setting. Nigeria being diverse in culture, tradition and language with the three major cultures/languages: Hausa, Ibo and Yoruba is explored in this project, hoping that when learning is put in the context of the learners, they will grasp better. Specifically, the subject focus of the project is science, bearing in mind that science is a field that requires inquiry, creativity, and collaboration. It demands learners’ engagement through hands-on activities that will ensure they gain insights about learning scientific concepts. This implies that pedagogical methods and practices in science should add more rigor to developing lessons that are learner-centred such that both students and teachers can collaborate on problem-solving and inquiry-based ventures thereby becoming not just consumers but creators of innovative practices and teaching/learning methodologies

AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DETERMINANTS OF ENTERPRISE RISK MANAGEMENT ADOPTION AMONG NIGERIAN PUBLIC LISTED FIRMS

    No full text
Enterprise risk management (ERM) is a widespread technique that integrates various methods in evaluating and minimizing all risks confronting firms. The application of this holistic approach to a firm’s complete risk outlook includes strategies and processes used by firms to manage risks and seize opportunities that arise in achieving firm’s objectives. Despite the recognition of the benefits of ERM implementation with enhanced organization performance, many firms are yet to adopt ERM in Nigeria as there are few of such studies that have investigated the drivers of implementing ERM framework. This study therefore considered the common factors responsible for ERM framework adoption by Nigerian public listed firms using logistic regression. The result shows that size of firm, firm industry, firm complexity, the independency of board directors, using one of the big Four auditor and multinational diversity are significant factors of ERM framework implementation among public listed firms. The findings of this study has practical relevance for practitioners as it suggest that when deciding whether or not to apply ERM, businesses should examine both internal and external issues to identify which firm-specific factors necessitate the use of an ERM framework

WEIBULL-LOGISTIC WITH EXPONENTIAL QUANTILE FUNCTION DISTRIBUTION

    No full text
The T-R{Y} is a T-X method of using a quantile function to generate probability distributions. It is a generalization of the T-X, Beta-X and many other families. This paper developed a 4-parameter Weibull-Logistic distribution using the T-R{Y} framework. This was achieved by combining the flexibility of the Weibull distribution with the two-parameter logistic distribution that has a location parameter, using the standard quantile function of the exponential distribution. Properties of the resulting distribution are extensively investigated, viz; rth non-central moments, quantiles, mode, survival function and hazard function. Plots of its density and cumulative distribution functions were presented to show its various shapes such as skewness or normal-type for some parameters’ values. The Logistic, Weibull, Weibull-logistic and skew logistic distributions are sub-models of the 4-parameter Weibull-Logistic distribution. The distribution is also found to relate with the Weibull distribution through its quantile function, a general feature of the T-R{Y} family. The maximum likelihood method was used to estimate the parameters of the distribution. Simulation study was carried out to show the consistency of its maximum likelihood parameters estimated, and it showed that the shape of the distribution approaches symmetry as the sample size increases. The applicability of the distribution was demonstrated using real life dataset and the likelihood ratio test showed that the location parameter is significant. The proposed distribution would be very useful in areas where Weibull and Logistic distributions are not good fit. The new generator can also be used to generate many other distributions in this family

    No full text
Value addition to rice as well as the contributions of middlemen in rice production are major drives that determine the quality and quantity of rice demanded for by consumer. This study focused on the perception of rice farmers on the attitude of middlemen on value addition in rice production in Ogun State. A total number of 181 respondents were used for the study. A multi stage sampling procedure was adopted to select farmers from major rice producing areas in the three senatorial districts of Ogun State. Information was retrieved with the use structured questionnaire and described with the use of frequency count, percentages and mean. The personal characteristics of the respondents shows that, there were more male smallholder rice farmers than their female counterpart in the study area with 63.1% and 36.9% male and female farmers, respectively. Also, higher percentage of the respondents are in their active age, as just 22.7% were above 36years. Most of the respondents are married (62.4%), also, more of the smallholder farmers had their HND/B.Sc. level as their highest educational certificate (34.8%). The study found out that smallholder rice farmers are mostly of the opinion that middlemen believed that only large-scale producers can add value to rice production, with a mean score of 3.74. Also, lack of fund as well as lack of government incentives for middlemen are perceived as the greatest constraints to value addition with a mean score of 1.45 and 1.43, respectively. The study recommends that government should assist smallholder farmers in aspect of funding for them to be involved in value addition so that their products can command good market prices
