Neighbourhood Infrastructure Financing Strategies: Experience from Installation and Maintenance of Electricity Infrastructure in Opako-Adigbe, Abeokuta, Ogun State

    No full text
Reactions to lack of, or partial finance of infrastructure (provision and maintenance) by the government has triggered resort to self-help financing in many urban communities. This study investigates community self-help as a financing strategy for the installation and maintenance of an electrical transformer in Opako-Adigbe neighbourhood in Abeokuta, Ogun State. A Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was held with eight community representatives and a survey was carried with 228 house-representatives responding. Data was extracted from audio recordings of the FGD and questionnaires from the survey analysed with descriptive statistics and ranking. Findings indicate that residents will be encouraged to pay for infrastructure financing when they observe sincerity in the efforts of the government and their community association towards solving the identified problem. The residents were satisfied with the adopted installation and maintenance strategies but more satisfied with installation strategy than maintenance strategy. The findings of this study provides an avenue for learning about the workability of community driven financing strategies. It will also assist the government in planning for urban infrastructure through effective collaboration with end users based on thorough understanding of how socio-economic contexts drive infrastructure provision. This is another community-based research that showcase the power of coordinated community efforts as a workable structure for the provision, and maintenance of basic urban infrastructure. The success of these strategies in the case-study area makes it applicable to communities with similar infrastructure needs

The study of heredity, or genetics, encompasses various biological ideas and is often seen as a challenging subject to teach and learn. Considering the, this study decided to employ mind maps to facilitate effective teaching of genetics in selected secondary schools in Ibadan, Nigeria.  students were introduced to the practice and principles of using mind maps to help them envision and make connections between various concepts relating to a topic. This is done to facilitate easy recall of facts offered in a topic and meaningful learning. Using a pretest, posttest, and non-randomized control group, this study used a quasi-experimental approach. Two whole classrooms with a total of 126 senior school three pupils comprised the study sample. The Genetic Achievement Test (GAT) and the modified Visual Auditory and Kinesthetic (VAK) Questionnaire were used to gather the data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data, and ANCOVA was used to test hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. The study's conclusions showed that pupils who were taught using mind maps performed better academically than those who were taught using a traditional approach. The research findings also showed that there was no statistically significant variation in the accomplishment levels taught between genders or based on the learning styles of the pupils. Thus, it was suggested that educators employ mind maps to help students understand genetics and other biological concepts that they may find challengin

    No full text
Innovative and educational tools known as "emerging technological tools" are added to conventional teaching and learning methods to improve students' academic achievement. They have not been completely employed for learning among Nigerian students, despite their instructional advantages. Therefore, the research looked at how undergraduates in South-West Nigeria regarded the utility, ease of use, attitude, and intention to utilize emerging technologies. The study used a survey-style quantitative research approach. The sample of 1,412 undergraduate students from 12 Federal and State institutions in South-West, Nigeria was purposefully selected from the population of all students in the region. A validated questionnaire created by the researcher was used to gather data. While the independent t-test and Analysis of variance (ANCOVA) were used to evaluate the hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance, percentages and mean scores were employed to address the research questions. According to the results, there was no discernible correlation between students' attitudes, intentions, perceived utility, and ease of use of emerging technologies in southwest Nigeria. The research found that, when properly incorporated into teaching and learning, emerging technological tools are superior learning methodologies for all undergraduate students and may enhance their academic performance. The research suggested, among other things, that students should get the assistance they need to properly use the newly developing technologies for learning, including all essential facilities

Evaluating the Methods and Constraints of Land Accessibility in Benin City, Nigeria

    No full text
Access to land remains a challenge in developing countries. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of various methods of accessing land and associated constraints in Benin City, Nigeria. Using a cross-sectional survey design, a total of 236 respondents comprising 210 household heads/owners of properties and 26 heads of practice in estate firms were sampled. Tools such as standard deviation and the relative importance index (RII) as well as factor analysis (FA) were used for data analysis. Results reveal that purchase, community allocation, and gifting are the best ways to gain access to the property in the study area. Key barriers to obtaining property are the high cost of acquisition, the uncertainty of tenure, and the difficulties in completing a land transaction. It is recommended that the city's zoning code is revised, to ensure equitable access to properties. An urgent need to address the problem of the exclusionary indigenous land-ownership syndrome is revealed. This will ameliorate the bottleneck associated with community and family land allocation

AGREEABLENESS AND CONSCIENTIOUSNESS (BIG FIVE TRAITS) AS CORRELATES OF NEGLECT OF ADOLESCENTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN TANGAZA AND NEIGHBOURING AREAS IN SOKOTO STATE, NIGERIA

    No full text
The survey studied agreeableness and conscientiousness coming from the big-five personality theory by Fiske (1949) and McCrae & Costa (1987). The traits of agreeableness and conscientiousness were studied as correlates of neglect among adolescents in schools in Tangaza and neighbouring areas. Descriptive survey of correlational type was employed. Four research questions and two hypotheses were developed; six sub-hypotheses got tested. The eleven schools sited in Tangaza, Silame, and Binji local governments formed the population of the survey. Stratified, purposive, and simple random sampling techniques were used. The sample for the study was 164 generated from three randomly selected schools; two male schools and one female school. The sample was limited to this number due to high time constraint and other factors. Nonetheless, this number was thought to be enough to represent the entire population owing to the homogeneity of the schools, of the students, and of the localities affected. Instruments adopted in the research were the Neglect Assessment Scale (NAS) by Muhammad (2019) and the Big Five Inventory (Short) (BFI- 10) by Rammstedt & John (2007). Pearson r was the statistics used to test the hypotheses. Results showed there was no significant relationship between agreeableness and conscientiousness traits and neglect experience. Although no significant relationship in all the six sub-hypotheses, it was recommended that parents, guardians, and all other stakeholders responsible for child/adolescent care should be responsible so that the young human beings under their care received good care in order to develop positive personality as they transited into adulthood

    No full text
This study addresses portfolio optimization through a comparative analysis of models. Utilizing 15 stocks from S&P 500 over 12 years, it contrasts optimal weights and objective values of five models: Konno and Yamazaki (KY), Feinstein and Thapa (FT), Adjusted Feinstein and Thapa (AFT), and Adjusted ChiangLin et al. (ALC). Employing Pyomo in Python with GLPK solver, findings reveal KY and LC models have identical outcomes. AFT model approximates KY and LC solutions. Modified AFT and ALC models, with short selling and risk-neutral interest rates, closely mimic KY’s results. The study recommends KY’s model or a modified ALC model for portfolio optimization
