Urban flooding is a perennial problem in Lagos state, Nigeria, given its location by the coastline, improper drainage and waste management, and a rapid rate of urbanization. Practices of open waste dumping into drainages in higher elevation areas increase flood risk downslope. The study thus analyzed residents’ perception of flood risk and household waste disposal in Somolu Local Government Area, Lagos State, to further understand the situation of waste in the area as well as the relationship between flooding and waste disposal practices along varying degrees of elevation. Spatial and non-spatial data sources were utilized via field measurements using GPS and a social survey, where the questionnaire was administered to 200 respondents.  The findings reveal that the elevation of the area varied from 2m to 20m above sea level. Generally, waste is collected mainly in waste baskets. It is disposed of in waste trucks and public bins, with a few respondents alluding to disposing of it in drainage and on roadsides. Public bins were used mainly in high-elevation areas, facilitating a higher rate of disposal than those in the mid and low elevations, which rely mainly on the waste vans. Only about 35% of the respondents experienced frequent flooding in their streets, the majority blaming it on the dumping of refuse in unsanctioned places. Increased efficiency by waste van operators, proper maintenance of public bins, and adoption of more flood-resilient management strategies, especially in the lowlands, were recommended

On the Solutions of Optimal Control Problems Constrained by Ordinary Differential Equations with Vector-Matrix Coefficients Using FICO Xpress Mosel

    No full text
This study addresses a general class of quadratic optimal control problems (OCPs) constrained by ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with vector-matrix coefficients. Due to the intractability of analytical solutions for complex dynamic systems, the focus is on developing and comparing efficient numerical methods. An analytical framework is first established by applying first-order optimality conditions to the Hamiltonian, yielding a system of first-order ODEs. The associated Riccati differential equation is then solved using a state transformation approach. For numerical solutions, the objective functional is discretized using Simpson's 1331 rule, and the system dynamics are approximated using a fifth-order implicit integration scheme. The discretized problem is reformulated as an unconstrained optimization problem via the Augmented Lagrangian Method and solved using both the CGM and FICO Xpress Mosel. Comparative results reveal that FICO Xpress Mosel provides faster convergence and greater numerical stability, especially for high-dimensional problems. These findings underscore the effectiveness of commercial solvers like FICO Xpress Mosel in solving large-scale quadratic OCPs with enhanced accuracy and efficiency

An Inventory Model for Non-Instantaneous Deteriorating Items Under Two-Phase Demand and Two-Level Trade Credit

    No full text
Trade credit is widely used in modern business transactions as it provides alternative to price reduction, encourage retailer's demand and minimizes holding cost. In this study, an inventory model for non-instantaneously deteriorating items under trade credit is developed. The demand is in two-phase, in the first phase, when there is no deterioration, the demand is stock dependent due to freshness of the stocked items whereas in the second phase, when deterioration sets in, the demand is assumed to be price dependent as a result of reduction in quality of the product. Profit functions of the model was obtained. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the optimal solutions to the profit functions was established. The Newton-Raphson iterative method was employed to find the solutions to the numerical examples using MATLAB. Sensitivity analysis was carried out to test the sensitivity of the model's parameters on the model. The major findings reveal that the holding cost, deterioration cost and the interest charged rate significantly influence the optimal cycle period and the maximum total profit

This study examined the challenges and preparedness of teachers in implementing inclusive education for children with intellectual disabilities in the Educational District VI Area of Lagos State. A descriptive survey research design was used for the study. Fifty teachers were sampled for the study using a purposive sampling technique. One self-designed and validated research instrument titled “Questionnaire on the Challenges and Preparedness of Teachers to Implement Inclusive Education for Children with Intellectual Disabilities (QRPTIECID)” was used to collect data for the study. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results showed that the level of teachers’ preparedness to implement inclusive education for children with intellectual disabilities in special schools is high. Meanwhile, the factors militating against implementing inclusive education for children with intellectual disabilities in the Educational District VI Area of Lagos State include: lack of adequately trained inclusive education teachers, insufficient funding for inclusive education, lack of adequate knowledge of inclusion implementation, the inability of teachers to change from their conventional methods of teaching, inadequate infrastructure to support inclusive education, high cost of inclusive education learning materials, lack of adequate preparedness for inclusive education practices, and lack of government intervention on the issue of inclusive education. Hence, it was recommended, among others, that the Lagos State government should allocate more funds to inclusive education to ensure adequate funding for teacher training, infrastructure development, and provision of learning materials. In the same vein, all special education professionals should avail themselves of the opportunities to take professional courses in online platforms like UDEMY, Coursera, LinkedIn, edX, SkillShare, TES Institute, and SpecialEducationResources.com, among others

    No full text
The decline in lecturers’ retention in Federal Universities in North-eastern Nigeria has raised concerns about the effectiveness of Administrators’ Talent Management Strategies (ATMS). This study examined ATMS as predictors of lecturers’ retention in the region. A predictive correlational design was adopted, with a study population of 17,592 academic and senior non-academic staff. Using a multi-stage sampling technique, 604 respondents were selected from three randomly chosen universities out of the seven in the North-east. Participants were proportionately sampled and purposively drawn from lecturers who were available and willing to participate. Data were collected using two validated instruments: the Administrators’ Talent Management Strategies Questionnaire (ATMSQ) and the Lecturers’ Retention Questionnaire (LRQ), with Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficients of 0.84 and 0.81, respectively. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer research questions, while regression analyses tested the hypotheses. Findings revealed that ATMS, specifically staff attraction, motivation, and professional development strategies, were moderate in the study area but significantly predicted lecturers’ retention in Federal Universities in North-eastern Nigeria (F (3, 556) = 16872.876, p < 0.05). The study concluded that enhancing ATMS is crucial to strengthening lecturers’ commitment and curbing attrition. Recommendations include improving and clearly communicating career advancement opportunities, as well as integrating both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational strategies. A supportive work environment that prioritises recognition, professional growth, and fair conditions is essential for sustaining retention in the region’s universities. These findings underscore the critical role of strategic talent management in sustaining academic stability and advancing educational development in conflict-prone Northern Nigeria

This study investigates the impact of social media platforms on the career development of Accounting students of Business Education in Ogun State. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to selected Accounting students of Business Education. The population of this study comprised all 7471 Business Education (Accounting) students in Ogun State. A sample of 1205 respondents was selected for the study using simple random sampling. Two research questionnaires were used to generate data for the study: the Social Media Platform Questionnaire (SMPQ) and the Career Development Questionnaire (CDQ). The findings revealed that social media platforms significantly contribute to students' awareness of career opportunities, personal branding, and employability skills. Specifically, TikTok had a significant influence on the career development of Accounting Students in Ogun State (β = 6.28, t = 2.826, p < 0.05). Also, WhatsApp had a significant effect on the dependent variable (β = 4.71, t = 9.734, p ˂ 0.05); Facebook had a moderate effect on the career development of the targeted respondents (β = 3.08, t = 2.245, p ˂ 0.05). In the same vein, YouTube predicts career development (β = 4.19, t = 3.198, p ˂ 0.05).  Also, there is a significant composite influence F (4, 1200) = 615.73, p < 0.05) of TikTok, WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube on the career development of accounting students in business education in Ogun State. The study concludes that while social media catalyses career development, its benefits can be maximised only when students are guided toward purposeful and professional use. It recommends that educators and career counsellors should integrate digital literacy and responsible social media usage into the curriculum to help undergraduates harness the full potential of these platforms for their future careers

INFLUENCE OF SELF AND PEER-ASSESSMENT IN ENHANCING MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE AMONG ADOLESCENTS IN LAGOS-STATE (IMPLICATIONS FOR EVALUATORS).

    No full text
In Nigerian secondary schools, traditional assessment practices are predominantly teacher-led and largely depend on summative testing. While these methods serve evaluative purposes, they often fall short in promoting students’ active engagement and metacognitive growth. Conversely, 21st-century assessment approaches emphasize learner-centered strategies that encourage students to take ownership of their learning. This study investigated the transformative influence of self and peer assessment as formative evaluation strategies in enhancing mathematics performance among adolescents in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study employed a quasi-experimental control group design, with Senior Secondary School Two (SS2) students in public schools as the population. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select participants.  Instruments for data collection was a researcher-developed questionnaire titled Influence of Self and Peer Assessment on Mathematics Performance (ISPAMP) and a Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT), with Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.794 for the questionnaire and  MAT yielded 0.82. Three research hypotheses were formulated and tested at the 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that self and peer assessment had a significant positive effect on students’ mathematics performance. Learners who participated in structured self and peer evaluation demonstrated higher achievement levels and developed more positive attitudes toward mathematics compared to those assessed using traditional methods. The study therefore recommends that schools and educational stakeholders in Lagos State and beyond should adopt self and peer assessment as integral components of classroom assessment practices, particularly in mathematics education. Teachers should be equipped through professional development programs to effectively design, implement, and monitor these strategies using well-structured rubrics, feedback protocols, and reflective tools

The Fading Pan-Africanist Thinker: Nnamdi Azikiwe in the Historiography of Pan-Africanist Thought

    No full text
Nnamdi Azikiwe, sometimes called ‘Zik of Africa’, is frequently disregarded in the literature on Pan-Africanism, despite his active and significant role in developing African consciousness during the 1920s and 1930s—a period representing the high tide of the Negro Renaissance in the New World. This study addresses a major gap in the historiography of Pan-Africanist thought concerning the place accorded to Azikiwe. The study employs a quantitative research method and relies heavily on the historical approach, combining primary and secondary data sources, including newspapers, official documents, books, and journal articles. Findings show that when great Pan-African thinkers are mentioned, Nnamdi Azikiwe is often either totally excluded or mentioned only in passing, whereas individuals such as Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere are deified. This implication—that the latter figures were more Pan-Africanist than Azikiwe—is contrary to fact; Azikiwe was one of the earliest sub-Saharan African thinkers with a high intellectual pedigree in continental and international relations. The study concludes that Azikiwe cannot be denied his leading Pan-Africanist status, and therefore recommends more academic studies on this sagacious intellectual
