Resolution to Recognize Service via a Presidential and Provost Service Award

Whereas, Ohio University has a long-standing tradition of recognizing excellence in teaching 
and research through the Presidential Teaching Awards, Presidential Research Awards, and a 
Provost Award for Excellence in Teaching; and 
 
Whereas service to the university, community, and profession is a fundamental component of the 
mission of Ohio University and is essential to the success and well-being of the institution; and 
 
Whereas many faculty members demonstrate outstanding service that significantly contributes to 
the university's goals, enhances the academic environment, and supports the broader community; 
 
Therefore, be it resolved that the Ohio University Senate recommends the establishment of a 
Presidential Service Award and Provost’s Award for Excellence in Service to honor faculty 
members who have demonstrated exceptional service to the community or profession; and 
 
Be it further resolved that the criteria for the Presidential Service Award and Provost’s Award for 
Excellence in Service be developed in consultation with faculty, staff, and administration to 
ensure that it appropriately reflects the diverse and impactful ways in which service is rendered; 
and 
 
Be it further resolved that the Ohio University Senate encourages the administration to 
implement these awards in a manner that aligns with the existing Presidential Teaching Award, 
Presidential Research Awards, and Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching ensuring that 
service is recognized and celebrated as a vital component of faculty excellence.

undergraduate degree. We find the current number to be unsustainable for our student body. 
To achieve our goal of reducing hours, we are proposing that we remove MUS 2240 History 
of Rock II from our required courses. This reduces the credit hour requirement by 3 credits. 
The overall degree requirements changed from 124 credits to 121 credits.

middle childhood, and adolescent to young adult teacher license who has completed the 
undergraduate state reading requirements to 70 credits for a person seeking their first (initial) 
license. As a result, it is very difficult to know what student is in what track. As the Special 
Education program faculty transition from Programs of Study to graduate DARS, we are 
requesting new program codes so that we can differentiate between each of the three tracks.  
 
We are requesting a similar numbering pattern for ME6220 (Early Childhood Intervention 
Specialist) as we are for the other two Special Education areas (ME6236 (Mild-Moderate), 
ME6237(Moderate-Intensive)). The last number will help us signify the student’s track. 
ME6220 would change to: 
 ME6601 (for 1st license) 
 ME6602 (for 2nd license) 
 ME6603 (for no license) 
For the purposes of OCEAN, we are utilizing ME6602 as the primary code because that 
reflects the majority of our applicants. Upon admission, if students need either ME6601 or

This proposal is to add a new track to the Exercise Physiology programs. This is to meet the 
requirement of one of the upcoming accreditations that the Exercise Physiology program 
must seek through the Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education 
(CASCE) (https://www.nsca.com/casce/). We are seeking this accreditation because students 
will need to graduate from an accredited program in order to sit for the National Strength and 
Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist exam. This 
accreditation requires us to have a track or major with “…a strength and conditioning title”. It 
also requires 300 hours or more of field experience meeting specific guidelines. Due to these 
requirements, we determined that adding a new track would be the best route since there will 
still be >50% overlap with the other Exercise Physiology track in the curricular requirements.  
 
The Exercise Physiology Major, BS8122 requires 97 credit hours. The Exercise Physiology 
Pre-Physical Therapy major track (BS8171) requires 99 credit hours. The Exercise 
Physiology Pre-Athletic Training major track (BS8178) requires 100 credit hours. This 
proposed track (Strength and Conditioning-Exercise Physiology) will require 104 credit 
hours.

Communication and Outreach for Non-Profit Management). There would be three main 
audiences for this certificate: non-degree seeking working professionals, graduate students 
outside the Voinovich School, and graduate students enrolled in our Master of Public 
Administration program who select this as their concentration option. We already offer these 
courses and they have capacity to enroll additional students, so no additional resources would 
be required for implementation.

There is an undeniable need for skilled advocacy in support of veterans.  This certificate is 
designed for students who are either working in or preparing for careers that impact the lives 
of veterans. It promotes an interdisciplinary approach by combining courses from Sociology 
(SOC) and Interdisciplinary Health Studies (IHS) to equip students with the tools to support 
veterans effectively.  Adding this certificate to an undergraduate degree enhances students’ 
understanding of the unique needs of veterans and prepares them to support these individuals 
across various disciplines and professions. 
 
The certificate is a 12-credit-hour program designed to give students both breadth and depth 
in their studies.  It includes two required core courses—one from Sociology and one from 
Interdisciplinary Health Studies—totaling six credit hours.  These courses provide social, 
historical, and cultural foundations for effectively engaging with veteran communities and 
understanding veterans’ legal, healthcare, and other social challenges.  Students can then 
choose from a selection of electives across both departments, allowing them to focus on their 
advocacy interests for the remaining six credit hours.

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (Athens) – PhD program currently offers two 
tracks: (1) EECS -specialization in computer science (PH7267) and (2) EECS – specialization in 
electrical engineering (PH7267). Both tracks have the same catalog code (PH7267) and require a 
minimum of 72 credit hours (Ph.D. with M.S. entry) or 88 credits (Ph.D. with B.S. entry).  
 
EECS faculty discussions during the 2024-2025 academic year were directed toward the limited 
availability of 6000-level courses for the Ph.D. students in the program. Ph.D. students are 
forced to take courses outside the EE/CS programs beyond the current program’s requirements 
due to insufficient 6000-level course offerings. This negatively affects the timely graduation of 
students in the research- oriented Ph.D. program due to excessive coursework. Furthermore, the 
reduced EE/CS graduate students’ population on campus also observed nationwide results in low 
EE/CS 6000 graduate class enrollment which negatively affects the 6000-level courses or higher 
numbers offered on campus.  
 
To mitigate the issue of an insufficient number of 6000-level courses required for the PH7267 
program we proposed to (1) replace one 6000-level course with one 5000-level course and (2) 
replace the requirement of 3 credits qualified coursework must be from mathematics and/or 
natural sciences courses 6000 level for the 3 credits qualified coursework requirement can be 
from mathematics and/or natural sciences courses 6000 level or above. 
 
This proposal requests:  
-students pursuing Ph.D. with M.S. entry must: 
 (1) complete a minimum of 15 hours of formal coursework at the 5000-level or higher including 
at least 12 hours of coursework must be in EE and/or CS at the 6000-level or higher and 3 hours 
of formal coursework can be in mathematics or the natural sciences at the 5000 or higher. 
Students must complete 2 hours of EE6981 and 1 hour of ET6020 and 54 hours of EE8950 or 
CS8950. Independent Study or other informal coursework will not count towards the new 
requirements.  
 
students pursuing direct entry Ph.D. with B.S. entry must: 
 (1) complete a minimum of 30 hours of formal coursework at the 5000-level or higher including 
at least 15 hours of coursework must be at the 6000 level or higher in EE and/or CS and 3 hours 
can be in mathematics or the natural sciences at the 5000-level or higher. Students must complete 
3 hours of EE6981 and 1 hour of ET6020 and 54 hours of EE8950 or CS8950. No more than 3 
credits hours of Independent Study or other informal coursework will count towards the new 
requirements.

Two changes are proposed to the MSPM program. First, we would like to add 21 elective 
courses per the recommendations of our collaborating partners; the CoB, CHSP, and Voinovich. 
We will also remove two electives that are either inappropriate for our students or are no longer 
offered. This change will increase flexibility for our students and will allow us to enhance our 
marketing messaging to attract new students.  
 
Secondly, the MSPM faculty proposes adding a data analytics/visualization course requirement 
to our core course requirements. This is to help ensure that we are graduating project managers 
who are comfortable working with data. The credit hours for the program core will increase from 
15 to 18 credit hours, with the elective total credit hours being reduced from 15 to 12 credit 
hours.  
 
The implementation of these changes will not change the program credit hours, which shall

2. Minor Reactivation

- This program was suspended when we lost the necessary faculty. However, we can now 
teach the course. The minor was extremely popular and losing it hurt enrollment in numerous 
upper-level courses.- Not having a paleontology class has led to first-year students dropping our 
major, so we are teaching the class again, which makes minor possible. 
 
Department Impact 
- All current faculty were involved in the decision to reactivate the program; the 
department faculty unanimously agreed to reactivate the program. Our chair affirmed this 
decision, and we are notifying CAS today. The necessary paleontology course will be taught 
biennially by an existing faculty member. This will result in a new prep and only offering GEOL 
5050 in alternate years. This should increase enrollments in relevant upper-level courses and gain 
us majors. 
 
3. Administrative Name Change 
The Economics department recently proposed a new AGP for our B.S. Economics majors, 
which was approved by the UCC at the end of last year. We are currently working on proposing 
another AGP for our B.A. Economics majors. 
 
Given the two AGPs in economics, we need to have a clear distinction in the names between the 
two to avoid any confusion for our students. The AGP that is already UCC approved (NDAXY4) 
has a Program Name of Accl Grad Path  – Economics, a Program Transcript Name of 
Accelerated Graduate Pathway – Economics, and a Program Abbreviation of APGECON.
