Getting the MOST from M.O.S.T.: Promoting MOST Education for Palliative Care Providers
Get PDFPhysician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) forms are relatively new in medicine. These forms help patients and providers navigate some of the difficult decisions that can occur near the end of life and in palliative care. Each state has its own version of POLST forms. In the state this DNP project was implemented, this form is called Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment, or MOST form. Given the complexities of medical decisions, patients may not always understand the options covered in the MOST form or the implied tasks with each choice. To further patient understanding of the MOST form, this DNP project developed an educational brochure that provided in-person education to providers within a multi-county palliative care organization.to palliative care patients covering the sections in the MOST form. Post implementation results showed significant positive responses and attitudes to the educational sessions. Providers also overwhelmingly noted the potential benefit of having an accessible, clear educational resource to offer patients and families
American Sign Language (ASL): Linguistically and Cognitively - Why Deaf People Should Learn ASL & Learn it Early
Get PDFThis thesis presents data supporting the value of including American Sign Language (ASL) in the education of Deaf people. Historically, Deaf education has not fully included or has excluded ASL in an effort to focus on English due to a belief that ASL hinders learning English. ASL must fit within the definition of language with unique linguistic features for its inclusion in language education. Plasticity of the brain lends itself to the ability for language processing networks to form based on language experience. Deaf people can fully access visual language versus auditory language. Therefore, acquiring ASL early in life, during the critical period, allows Deaf people to establish a strong language foundation, upon which they could also learn English. Late language learning alters neural networking, which can lessen one’s ability to process language and use other cognitive processes. Despite differing modalities, ASL and English engage similar neural networks, called language regions. Consequently, ASL follows similar cognitive processes to English, which supports the value of ASL as a language fully accessible for Deaf people to acquire and use. Learning ASL prepares Deaf people for success in communication, learning English, and other endeavors in life because of effective neural networking
How Animal Assisted Therapy with Dogs is Understood and Perceived among Health Care Providers and the General Public in Canada
Get PDFWhen a dog is included in treatment to meet an individual’s therapeutic goal it is known as Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT). Although AAT has increased in popularity, limited research exists regarding its efficacy. According to the diffusion of innovation theory an innovation must be properly communicated to all appropriate channels before it may be adopted into practice. Little is known about how AAT is understood and perceived among healthcare professional and public populations in Canada. In the present study, health care professionals and the general public in Canada were surveyed. Attitude toward dogs, openness to experience, agreeableness, and subjective distress were investigated. Results suggest that both professional and public populations have limited knowledge of AAT but are interested in learning more about the intervention. Although attitude toward dogs appears to be positively associated with attitude toward AAT, the impact of openness to experience, agreeableness, and subjective distress is limited

An Exploration of the Relationship Between Leaders’ Cultural Competence and Academic Outcomes in Texas Public Schools
Get PDFThis study explored the cultural knowledge (CK) and cultural skills (CS) levels of Texas school leaders to determine if there was a relationship between cultural knowledge and cultural skill as well as between principals’ CK and CS levels and school academic outcomes. In comparing within-group scores, the results indicated CK scores were higher than CS scores in all participant groups. Between-group analysis revealed participants in non-Title I schools scored higher in CK, but Title I school leaders scored higher in CS. Results further indicated school leaders who identified as a member of a marginalized group scored higher in CS but slightly lower in CK than leaders who did not identify as a member of a marginalized group. There was a statistically significant, positive correlation between CK and CS scores; however, CK scores were negatively correlated with proficiency levels in marginalized student groups and CS scores were positively correlated with proficiency levels in marginalized student groups
Fostering the Multicultural Efficacy of Principal Candidates
Get PDFThis mixed methods study was completed with principal preparation candidates. Data was collected using the Multicultural Efficacy Scale (MES) and focus group interviews. Principal candidates’ multicultural efficacy was measured before and after participating in monthly diversity seminars and reflections. The diversity seminars provided first-person storytelling from diverse members of school communities including individuals from different LGBTQ, race, religion, socio-economic status, and language backgrounds. The study found principal candidates had improved multicultural efficacy at the end of the year-long diversity series. Research shows this could lead to supportive behaviors as social justice-oriented school leaders
