The Impact of Professional Development on Specially Designed Instruction for Students With a Specific Learning Disability
Get PDFThis research study, rooted in the theoretical framework of phenomenology, examined the impact of professional development related to specially designed instruction for students with a learning disability in reading. Teachers of students who had mastered at least 50% of their IEP goals in reading or had exited from special education services were the participants in this study. In addition to the teachers, administrators and district staff who worked with these teachers and students were included. Through a mixed methods research design, 47 participants were surveyed using Qualtrics, and 14 participants were interviewed. Findings demonstrated that professional development related to specially designed instruction proved beneficial to teachers, administrators, and district staff in helping students receive direct and intensive support in overcoming deficits and mastering goals. However, roadblocks such as lack of coaching, few incentives for professional development, scheduling conflicts, and vacancies negatively impacted the effectiveness of the professional development implementation. This research will provide the district with recommendations on how to increase the effectiveness of professional development for teachers related to specially designed instruction for students with a learning disability in reading to facilitate student progress
Faculty and Staff Perceptions of Mental Health Services in the Elementary Schools of a Rural District
Get PDFThis case study focused on the perceptions of faculty and staff of mental health services at the elementary level in a rural district. Mental health services provided in elementary school settings can ultimately change the outcome of individuals’ lives. Many districts in North Carolina lack the funds to hire mental health counselors, and must rely on elementary school counselors to take the lead in providing students with the mental health care they need. This qualitative case study focused on the perceptions of faculty and staff and was the primary focus of this research. An analysis of feedback from three elementary school teachers, three elementary school counselors, three elementary mental health counselors, and three elementary principals was conducted. Through the interviews, mental health services in the elementary school was found to have an overall positive response from all participants. When dealing with mental health, many counselors have found that students who have experienced some form of childhood trauma struggle academically, socially, and emotionally. Without the proper mental health support, a child’s life may be negatively impacted by drugs, alcohol, prostitution, homelessness, academic failure, family isolation, or even death. The goal of this case study was to increase awareness of mental health services available in the elementary school setting and to increase recognition of students who will benefit from accessing these services
Are Generational Attitudes Toward Digital Marketing Technology Exhibited in Automobile Purchase Behaviors?
Get PDFThis dissertation was focused on the current digital purchasing trend in the used automotive industry in order to understand which factors impacted the growth of this trend through the lens of generational cohort theory. The growth of consumer informedness in the automotive sector has created drastic changes in how consumers are able, and willing, to purchase vehicles. Used car dealerships who adopt successful internet marketing techniques can capture and engage potential customers and then convert that engagement into sales. Companies like Carvana, Vroom, and CarMax have seized this opportunity and created a digital marketing phenomenon with major impacts on consumer purchasing behavior throughout the durable goods sector. As consumer behavior trends toward an increase in digital shopping and purchasing, this research shows that the generations considered digital natives are mostly driving that trend, which has significant implications for the sales and marketing efforts of automobile dealers. While there was ample literature available regarding generational cohort theory and its impact on consumer behavior, there remained a noticeable gap in the academic body of knowledge examining this behavior in relation to large online purchases, such as automobiles. The research question under review was, to what extent do trust, social factors, and sales strategies impact online automobile purchase behaviors, and are the relationships among the constructs moderated by generational cohort theory? For this dissertation, a survey simulation of 1361 respondents was conducted to understand which key factors impact a consumer’s willingness to purchase an automobile online. The statistical testing revealed three variables that can help predict this behavior. Further, one of the hypotheses was rejected after testing, and the others were confirmed, but only with the moderation of certain generational cohorts. Future research should be considered that follows the trend of these cohorts in their high-involvement purchase decisions, particularly in the wake of Covid-19 and the impact from brick-and-mortar stores closing during the pandemic

No full textFounders Day 2023 honored the names and legacies of persons and groups who played formative roles in the University’s development. The posthumous presentation of this year’s Founders Medal to J.D. Huggins, the first principal of Boiling Springs High School.
James Dwyer “J.D.” Huggins, who came to be known as Professor Huggins, served as the first principal of Boiling Springs High School from 1905 to 1928. His desire to guide students into thoughtful, conscientious service-leaders sparked student-led initiatives to establish the Athenian and Kalagathian literary and debate societies. Under his guidance, the institution remained strong through the 1920s, when it transitioned to a junior college.
Founders Day 2023 also featured the placement of a historical marker at the Washburn House, built in 1941. The Washburn House was given by Seaton Washburn in memory of his wife and two daughters: Mintie Missouri “Sudie” Hamrick Washburn, Sarah Oeland Washburn and Mae Washburn McMurray. A student in the blind and visually impaired program, he had earned two degrees in mathematics and computer science with a minor in political science. Armstrong had planned to pursue a job in software engineering and development, but a revelation from his family history inspired him to take a different path.
