The Communications Process for On-Track Mentoring Programs at the High School Level
Get PDFComparable to other schools in the local education agency, this mid-sized rural high school’s On-Track program utilized early warning indicators to track the well-being of students and to determine what actions needed to occur to promote student success. Through various meetings, the mid-sized rural high school’s On-Track stakeholders indicated areas for improvement, specifically in the area of communications. The On-Track program stakeholders expressed how they desired to improve stakeholder involvement and collaboration and enhance how program information is shared. The purpose of this study was to analyze the literature, theoretical frameworks, and data utilizing a mixed methodology approach in order to identify where communication efforts could be improved. The study embodies action research designed to address the question, “How can the On-Track program’s communication outlets enhance program awareness, meet the communication needs of all stakeholders, and better all stakeholders’ involvement?” This study is highly valuable to other high school-level mentoring programs in need of enhanced communication efforts. The findings of this study are represented through a communications plan which can be modified to meet the unique communication needs of other high school-level mentoring programs
The Impact of Student Learning Pathway Choices During the COVID-19 Pandemic on Academic Achievement
Get PDFIn the fall of 2020, students chose the learning pathway that best suited their situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Learning pathways were face-to-face, virtual synchronous, and virtual asynchronous. Because of this, in the fall of 2021, all students demonstrated learning loss. The learning loss, however, was not congruent among students. This quantitative study sought to determine if a student’s learning pathway choice during the COVID-19 pandemic impacted their academic achievement as measured by grade point average, end-of-course exam scores for Algebra I, and qualification for Tier 2 academic interventions in a multi-tiered system of support. This study was conducted in a large school district in South Carolina. The population used was the students in one of the district’s high schools who entered their first year of high school during the 2021-2022 school year. Independent t tests and chi-square tests of independence were used to determine if a student’s measure of academic achievement was independent of their learning pathway choice during the 2020-2021 school year. This study found that overall, students learning in the face-to-face pathway had higher academic achievement than their peers on the virtual synchronous pathway. This study did not have enough data to make any conclusions regarding students on the virtual asynchronous pathway. The findings of this study could lead to better training and preparation for teachers and students moving toward virtual learning options in the future
Improving Intravenous Catheter Insertion Success in Difficult Access Patients
Get PDFAround one in every nine Emergency Department (ED) patients have Difficult Intravenous Access (DIVA) and 25% of ED patients will require more than one attempt (Fields et al., 2014a). Failed insertion attempts contribute to decreased patient satisfaction, care delays, and financial losses. The freestanding ED affiliated with a multi-state, not-for-profit healthcare system in an urban community had difficulty with first-attempt Peripheral IV (PIV) insertion success in identified patients. The target population was the clinical staff of the freestanding ED which included Registered Nurses and Paramedics. The objective outcome was to enhance personal knowledge of PIV catheter insertion in difficult-access patients and retain at least 80% of DIVA Clinical Predictor Tool education by the end of the project implementation. The project goal was that a reduction in PIV insertion attempts will result in improved patient outcomes and satisfaction. The quality improvement project was implemented with a survey method and statistical analysis was used to gather quantitative data. Two identical surveys were administered prior to and after the target population was presented with DIVA Clinical Predictor Tool education. The project data showed a 97.7% retention of DIVA Clinical Predictor Tool education after implementation. It was proven that when skilled clinicians were presented with education on the DIVA Clinical Predictor Tool and appropriate alternative insertion techniques, personal knowledge of PIV insertion in DIVA patients was improved
Using Unfolding Case Studies to Develop Critical Thinking in First-Semester Nursing Students
Get PDFThere is a crisis in competency among new nurses in the United States. Prelicensure nursing education prepares them to pass the NCLEX-RN, but it does not provide the necessary foundation for sound clinical decision-making. Mistakes in the clinical setting can lead to failure to rescue, resulting in the third leading cause of death: medical error. A radical change is needed to prepare nurses with the clinical judgment skills necessary for patient care. Educators must be mindful of the academic-practice gap and adopt evidence-based improvements, including active learning with unfolding case studies. This quality improvement project involved a four-part unfolding case study in lieu of a traditional lecture to teach content to first-semester nursing students. Decreasing Nursing Burnout Post COVID-19 Pandemic Through Complementary Therapies
Get PDFThis quality improvement project aimed to address the problem of nursing burnout post COVID-19 pandemic through complementary therapies. Nursing burnout can be mental, emotional, or physical exhaustion which an excessive amount of prolonged stress can cause. Nursing burnout has affected nursing staff worldwide, directly impacting the care provided to patients and the patient\u27s satisfaction. The Nursing Worklife Model was utilized as the theoretical framework for this project (Appendix A). The literature review exhibits the prevalence of nursing burnout in nursing staff. A quantitative study was utilized for this project. The Oldenburg Burnout Inventory was utilized to establish the participant\u27s level of nursing burnout pre- and post- complimentary therapies usage (Appendix B). The results showed the use of complementary therapies aided in inducing a calming work environment, encouraging positive emotions, and helping to create a calm environment to assist the nursing staff in lessening the feelings of burnout in the workplace
Combating the Sedentary Lifestyle in a Rural North Carolina Community
Get PDFA rural North Carolina community is experiencing an increase in inactivity, obesity, and comorbidities. The project leader collaborated with the local health department and recreation department to implement community walking events. The events aimed to promote physical activity while providing education to the residents as to why physical activity is important. The project leader used optional pre-walking event and post-walking event surveys to assess activity change and increased knowledge. Out of the 90 attendees, 68% completed the pre-event survey and 14% responded to the post-event survey. This created limited data available for follow-up. All participants who completed the follow-up plan to either start or continue to exercise. The majority (\u3e70%) learned something new about physical activity and the negatives of inactivity through the education provided
